Civic responsibility is a trend that influences citizenship education.

Civic responsibility is
where citizens utilize their human rights and citizenship. Each citizen has a rights and
responsibilities that they must exercise. Jamaica is a democratic country where we have a right to
exercise our civic responsibilities and rights. Each person must be treated equally in the society.
Civic education ensures that on civic responsibility students/ children are aware of their
responsibilities in a democratic society. Civic responsibility provides students will good
citizenship practises, and the opportunity to compare their democratic society with other different
government systems around the world. Example of civic responsibility in Jamaica is the paying
of his or her share of tax in the country. In order for the country to function and grow citizen
must pay their tax. The paying of taxes benefits each and every citizen such as the building of
infrastructure, schools, roads, hospitals, keeping the environment clean etc. Another example is
the obeying of the laws of the land. Government implement laws and policies for us to obey as
citizens. No country can run without laws and rules. Citizens must obey laws and rules by being
law abiding citizens.
Citizenship education here will teach students how importance it is for citizens to pay
taxes and obey the laws of the land. They can use what they have learnt and share it with their
family and relatives. Also when they are out in the world and are adults they will know that they
must exercise their responsibility as a citizen in a good way. Therefore we will have a deduction
in persons breaking the law and crime and violence. More citizens would see the importance of
paying of taxes, that it is not the government that benefits from taxes but everyone.
Religion is a trend that influences citizenship education. Religion has been in existence
since the beginning of time. Jamaica as we all know is culturally diverse. We have different races
within our culture as a result of our history. Therefore with the different cultures that exist within

our country we have different religious beliefs such as Hinduism, the Rastafarian movement,
Islamism etc. This is a very sensitive trend where persons at times see their religion as the one
true religion which leads them to undermine others or discriminate against others or even try to
indoctrinate. Thus citizenship education is very vital in the teaching or religious education
because it teaches students to be tolerant of the different religious beliefs that exist in the
classroom. Religion is a trend that influences citizenship education where students will be able to
teach their family and relatives not to discriminate against other religious beliefs. Also when
students/ children are older and are in the world they will know how to function or deal with
individuals who are of different religious practices. Religion is an important trend where it helps
young people and students to develop into good citizens who are capable of living together as
citizens. When teaching religion educators one must be thoughtful and teach in such a sensitive
way that improves the values of democracy and also the respect for diversity.
An example of how religion is a trend in citizenship education is the fact that it brings
support and help. It enforces moral responsibilities and commitments. As I have mentioned
before Jamaica is a Christian country where we have impose commitment to assist others
through institutions such as the schools, banks etc. The Christian communities have made it their
duty to assist the less fortunate which creates that civic bond.
Technology is a trend that influences citizenship education. In Jamaica there is a swift
increase in technology which is putting abundant demand on education. Technology has been
generated to make the world a smarter place. Technology has allowed both teachers and students
to connect globally through educational channels. Technology allows students to see things and
understand things better. Technology has educated students about other cultures around the
world, therefore making them more aware and tolerant of what does on in other countries. With

students being technological literate they can use technology to influence decision makings.
They can use technology in communicating, designing etc. Technology influences citizenship
where it offers students opportunities to engage especially in public life. When students are
engage in the use of the internet they can get information that they search for which is allowing
them to acquire civic literacy locally and also globally. Technology holds the potential of
promoting and profiting citizenship education and it impacts civic life. The influence of
televisions and radios are relatively available to all thus students can use this tool to be more
educated on civic education. Technology has and will continue to influence the way how we
participate in our society, how our society is being run, and how we prepare our students to being
good active members in our democratic society. In order to have a healthy democracy citizens
most have access to information. Access to information has change from over the years. In
todays day and age we access information through the use of the internet and other electronic
technologies that are available.
Example of how technology influencing citizenship education is students googling about
global issues around the world. Students are intrigue about what is happening globally not just in
their home country. As a result of technology they are able to do so which makes them critical
thinkers and open their eyes to what the world is really like and also that each country is different
and has different problems and issues. Another example is students using technology more
specific digital tools to learn more about what is happening in their country. Students use digital
tools such as videos and documentaries to learn about the history of their country and other
Poverty is a trend that influences citizenship education. Poverty is defined according to
the online Business Dictionary as a condition where peoples basic needs for food, clothing, and

shelter are not being met. Poverty is when you have basically have little or no money to satisfy
basic needs .There are normally two types of poverty absolute and relative poverty. In Jamaica
most of the citizens are living in poverty. Unemployment leads to poverty. There are many
persons in Jamaica who lack basic amenities such as proper water supply, electricity, etc.
Therefore they are again going to break the law and engage themselves in criminal activities.
Jamaica as we all know is a poor developing country where we rely on foreign exchange
to run our country. The only way through poverty is through education. Therefore seen that
poverty is a social issue that most citizens are familiar with it has an influence on citizenship
education. There are many students who cannot attend school because of being poverty stricken
thus they would be able to acquire an education. Without education it is very hard for individuals
to acquire a job or be employed. Hence they will most likely lead to poverty. Every citizen in
Jamaica has a right to an education, this does not matter your social status in the society.
Therefore every child must attend school and get an education. Many persons are unaware of this
right thus through the teaching of citizenship education students will know their right and know
that not because they might be poor, they still have a right to be educated.
Culture is a trend that influences citizenship education. Culture influences how we think
as a society or country. It helps to shape who we are as a people, what we value the most of how
we see the world. As a country we must know our cultural identity that which makes us who we
are. Citizenship education teaches us about or Caribbean cultural identity as a people and as a
nation. Globalization has a negative impact on our culture where we are introduced to other
countries culture which is changing our culture. Such impacts are in our clothes, appearances,
language and even what we watch and listen in the media. We are becoming so Americanize in
every way possible. As a black nation we are adopting the American lifestyle where we are

watching so many American movies that is not of our culture and watching movie less of our
culture. We have completely I would say adopted the American and other countries dress code
and also appearances. Others go as far as skin bleaching to look American and white.
Citizenship education teaches students about their culture and their roots. It helps
students to value and cherish their unique culture by preserving it and not adapting others
culture. Ones culture is important where it gives them a sense of belonging and identity.
Therefore teaching students culture through citizenship education will help them to be a good
citizen and appreciative.
In concluding citizenship education is indeed an important course that should be taught in
every school. It basically shows us as citizens our right and responsibilities as a citizen of a
country. Citizenship as a subject or a course will definitely motivate and educated our students
for them to be good citizens and participate in the affairs of their country. With the teaching of
citizenship education students can use the knowledge that they have and educate their families
and relative keeping them inform about what it is all about. There are many issues and trends that
influence citizenship education that should be examine and persons should be knowledgeable
about these issues and trends.
