À l’occasion de trois journées exceptionnelles conçues comme moment privilégié
de rencontres, de discussions et de débats, ARCHILiFE 010 rassemble des
personnalités provenues de contextes multiples, qui toutes travaillent à repenser de
manière significative la question des pratiques architecturales pour notre temps.

Prenant appui sur un ensemble d’interventions publiques – dialogues, séminaires,

conférences – ARCHILiFE 010 entend ainsi contribuer aux interrogations que suscite
aujourd’hui l’activité architecturale conçue comme mode d’investigation, d’intervention
et de connaissance dans un contexte mondialisé.

Propice au partage, ARCHILiFE 010 se présente comme un dispositif privilégiant

l’échange d’idées, d’interrogations et d’analyses. Son ambition consiste à réunir les
conditions favorables à un travail exigeant, y compris dans sa dimension spéculative ou
théorique, en résonance avec la tradition des rencontres internationales qui a structuré
l’histoire moderne et contemporaine de l’architecture. Chacune de ces trois journées
prend en outre appui sur une série de questions qui visent à favoriser une dynamique
féconde d’interlocution entre les personnalités réunies à cette occasion.

For three special days planned as a forum for meetings, discussions and debates,
ARCHILiFE 010 will be bringing together leading figures from many different
backgrounds – people who are all involved in meaningfully re-thinking the issue of
architectural praxis and activity for our day and age.

Using a series of public events – dialogues, seminars, lectures – it is the intent of

ARCHILiFE 010 to thus contribute to issues and questions currently being raised by
architectural activity seen as a method of investigation, intervention and knowledge
within a globalized context.

Welcoming the notion of sharing, ARCHILiFE 010 is a conference focusing on

exchanges of ideas, issues and analyses. Its aim is to create conditions that will
encourage exacting work throughout, including its speculative and theoretical
dimension, tallying with the tradition of international encounters that has underpinned
the modern and contemporary history of architecture. Each one of these three days will
also focus on a series of issues aimed at encouraging fruitful and dynamic discussion
among the distinguished attendees gathered for this occasion.

Quelle recherche théorique

et historique dans le champ
de l’architecture aujourd’hui ?

Cette séquence permettra d’examiner certains aspects significatifs inhérents

à la production théorique et à la recherche historique appliquées aux pratiques
architecturales et à la mise en œuvre de projets. L’architecture a traditionnellement
impliqué des relations à sa propre histoire et aux manières possibles de l’écrire,
et témoigné d’une capacité d‘élaboration théorique complexe à l’égard des pratiques
de projet et de construction. Celles-ci se sont souvent nourries d’apports spéculatifs et
conceptuels ayant permis de les concevoir comme de véritables champs d’application
et d’expérimentation. Au moment où les forces et les accents caractéristiques de ces
différents rapports semblent plus que jamais se déplacer ou connaître de profondes
transformations, et tandis que se modifie également la nature du dialogue entre
l’architecture et d’autres disciplines, il s’agit ici d’identifier et d’analyser certaines
orientations récentes propres au domaine actuel de la recherche.
Différents intervenants, spécialistes de ces questions, mettront ainsi en lumière
certaines priorités particulièrement significatives de ce domaine aujourd’hui, afin de
discuter les questions desquelles elles procèdent et leurs modalités de mise en œuvre.

What theoretical and historical

research pertains in the field of
architecture today?

This session will take a look at certain significant aspects inherent to theoretical
production and historical research applied to architectural praxis and activity, and the
implementation of projects. Architecture has traditionally involved relations to its own
history as well as its possible ways of writing it, and illustrated a capacity for complex
theoretical formulation with regard to projects and constructions. These latter are
often fuelled by speculative and conceptual contributions that have made it possible
to conceive them as actual fields of application and experimentation. At a time when
the forces and emphases typical of these differing relations seem more than ever to
be shifting and undergoing deep-seated changes, and while the nature of the dialogue
between architecture and other disciplines is also altering, what is involved here is the
identification and analysis of certain recent directions being espoused in the current
field of research. Various participants, experts in such matters, will thus shed light
on certain especially significant priorities in this area today, so as to discuss both the
issues from which they stem, and ways of applying them.

l’enseignement et la transmission
de l’architecture sont-ils pensés
aujourd’hui ?

La question de la transmission reste au cœur des programmes d’enseignements

des écoles d’architecture : que transmettre, comment, et selon quelles priorités ?
Par ailleurs, si l’architecture peut être transmise, c’est d’abord parce qu’elle-même
transmet. Pourtant, les politiques de l’enseignement et les conceptions qui les sous-
tendent supposent au contraire une capacité d’attention soutenue aux transformations
que connaissent non seulement les pratiques architecturales elles-mêmes, mais
également l’ensemble des paramètres qu’elles impliquent et l’évolution du champ
de la recherche qui l’étudie. C’est afin de contribuer à l’intelligibilité des priorités
et des débats qui sous-tendent les programmes d’enseignement aujourd’hui dans
ce domaine que cette table ronde sera suivie d’une discussion collective impliquant
l’ensemble des participants conviés à l’occasion d’ARCHILiFE 010.

What priorities and challenges

underpin today’s thinking about
the teaching and transmission of
architecture?

The issue of transmission still lies at the heart of teaching programmes in schools
of architecture: what is to be transmitted, how, and based on what priorities? What
is more, if architecture can be transmitted, it is first and foremost because it, itself,
transmits, But teaching policies and the concepts underpinning them presuppose, on
the contrary, a capacity for sustained attention to changes being undergone not only
by architectural practices themselves, but also the whole set of parameters that they
involve and the development of the field of research studying them. It is to contribute
to the intelligibility of the priorities and discussions underpinning today’s teaching
programmes in this field that this round table will be followed by a group discussion
involving all the participants who have been invited to ARCHILiFE 010.

La lecture de la condition urbaine

constitue-t-elle encore l’embrayeur
principal des projets architecturaux
d’aujourd’hui ?

Depuis la recherche relative à la ville de Las Vegas inaugurée par Denise SCOTT-
BROWN et Robert VENTURI en 1972, les connaissances inhérentes à l’architecture
contemporaine s’intéressent à la question de la « ville générique ». Une tradition de
recherche en est résultée, qui met en cause les modèles hérités du modernisme.
Il s’agira ici de donner voix à certains de ceux, architectes et théoriciens, qui mettent
en œuvre des dispositifs descriptifs et analytiques se rapportant aux pratiques
architecturales contemporaines.

Reading the urban condition does it

still represent the main force behind
today’s architectural projects?

Since the research on the city of Las Vegas embarked upon by Denise SCOTT-
BROWN and Robert VENTURI In 1972, knowledge about contemporary architecture
has shown an interest in the issue of the “generic city”. The outcome has been a long
line of research, questioning the models inherited from modernism. This is why, some
of those, architects and theoreticians alike, who are applying descriptive and analytical
systems that are connected with contemporary architectural practices will have their
say, too.

Entre relectures du modernisme

et perspectives contemporaines,
quels dialogues et débats entre l’art
et l’architecture aujourd’hui ?

Lieu dédié aux pratiques de l’art contemporain, il était logique que le LiFE convie
à l’occasion de ces rencontres internationales différents artistes, architectes et
théoriciens capables de mettre en lumière certaines relations, passées ou présentes,
que ces deux domaines entretiennent depuis longtemps. À cette occasion,
il s’agira d’engager un dialogue public avec ces artistes et architectes qui permettra
d’appréhender les logiques et les priorités à partir desquelles ils s’intéressent à l’art
et à l’architecture, que ce soit dans son moment moderniste ou bien à partir de
questions qu’ils partagent avec et/ou adressent aux architectes et aux artistes
d’aujourd’hui.

Between re-readings of modernism

and contemporary perspectives,
what dialogues and debates exist
between art and architecture today?

As a place dedicated to the praxis and activity of contemporary art, it was quite logical
that the LiFE should invite to this international conference different artists, architects
and theoreticians capable of shedding light on certain relations, past and present alike,
which these two domains have long enjoyed. For this occasion, what will be involved
will be a public dialogue with these artists and architects which will help to explain the
logical systems and priorities on which their interest in art and architecture is based,
be it in its modernist moment or in relation to issues which they share with and/or are
addressing to architects and artists of today.

Qu’entendons-nous aujourd’hui
par ‘architecture’ ?

Il s’agit ici d’envisager l’architecture comme une pratique qui, au fil de son histoire,
n’a cessé d’être confrontée à la nécessité de questionner et de reformuler son
statut, ses enjeux et les limites de son action. Associant historiens et praticiens,
cette première session d’ARCHILiFE 010 entend ainsi examiner ce qui, de ce statut
et de cette action, peut être analysé pour notre époque.
Cette intervention sera conduite en deux temps. Le premier permettra d’exposer
quelques cas exemplaires qui, au point de vue des intervenants, témoignent d’une
reformulation pertinente de cette question au regard de l’actualité des pratiques
architecturales. Le second permettra aux modérateurs conviés pour cette occasion
d’entrer en dialogue avec eux et de prolonger leurs propos par une discussion.
Le choix des intervenants procède ici comme ailleurs d’une logique qui privilégie
un ensemble hétérogène de postures et de pratiques, témoignant de l’extension
caractéristique de ce domaine aujourd’hui.

What do we mean today

by ‘architecture’?

Involved here is a vision of architecture as a praxis which, throughout its history,

has forever been confronted by the need to challenge and reformulate its status,
its stakes and the boundaries of its activities. In associating historians and
practitioners, the intent of this first ARCHILiFE 010 session is thus to examine what
can be analyzed for our present, in relation to this status and these activities.
This meeting will be conducted in two stages. The first will help to set forth one or
two exemplary cases which, from the participants’ viewpoint, illustrate a relevant
reformulation of this question with regard to the current state of play in architectural
practices. The second will enable the moderators invited for this occasion to
embark upon a dialogue with participants and thus develop their ideas in discussion.
The choice of participants will proceed here as elsewhere by way of a logic that
encourages a heterogeneous set of stances and practices, attesting to the scope
that characterizes this area today.

Pourquoi et avec quels outils

l’architecture est-elle pensée,
communiquée et diffusée aujourd’hui ?
En vue de quels enjeux publics ?

L’architecture envisagée comme domaine de connaissance et comme logique

de questionnement implique aujourd’hui des modes d’élaboration et d’inscription
qui accompagnent, relaient, analysent ou critiquent les pratiques architecturales
dans le monde contemporain. Expositions et publications (papier ou numérique)
constituent ainsi un récit parallèle à celui des pratiques, et interviennent comme
constructions discursives parallèles à la matérialité des pratiques et projets
de l’architecture, favorisant ainsi les dynamiques de dialogue entre spécialistes
et professionnels tout en élargissant leur réception à un public plus vaste pour mieux
mettre en discussion la question d’une politique de l’architecture pour notre temps.
Toutefois, à l’heure où l’emprise des stratégies communicationnelles n’épargne pas
plus l’architecture qu’aucun autre domaine d’activité, il s’agira ici de mettre
en lumière, à partir de certains projets ou postures exemplaires, les modalités
permettant de contribuer à la diffusion de l’architecture, favorisant des processus
d’inclusion démocratique et de production de connaissance.

Why and with what tools is architecture

being conceived, communicated and
disseminated today? And with a view
to what public challenges?

Architecture seen as an area of knowledge, and as a logical system that raises

questions, today involves methods of formulation and incorporation which go hand-
in-hand with, bolster, analyze and criticize architectural practices in the contemporary
world. Exhibitions and publications (paper and digital) thus form a parallel narrative
to that of activities, and intervene like discursive constructs running parallel with the
material nature of architectural praxes and projects, thus encouraging dynamic dialogue
between specialists and professionals while at the same time broadening their reception
to a much wider public, the better to discuss the issue of an architectural policy for our
day and age. However, at a time when the ascendancy enjoyed by communicational
strategies is no longer letting architecture off the hook, any more than any other field
of activity, what will be involved here is shedding light, based on certain exemplary
projects and positions, on methods helping to contribute towards the dissemination of
architecture, encouraging processes of democratic inclusion and knowledge production.
