What is the Internet of Things?

The Internet of Things1 refers to uniquely identifiable objects (things) and their virtual
representations in an Internet-like structure. The term Internet of Things was first
used by Kevin Ashton in 1999.
Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is often seen as a pre-requisite for the Internet of
Things. If all objects of daily life were equipped with radio tags, they could be
identified and inventoried by computers.
With all objects in the world equipped with minuscule identifying devices, daily life on
Earth would undergo a transformation.

Companies would not run out of stock or waste

products, as involved parties would know which
products are required and consumed.
Mislaid and stolen items would be easily tracked
and located.
Your ability to interact with objects could be altered
remotely, based on your current status and existing
user agreements.

What is mist Mesh and Why is it Better than aRFID?

Secure 802.15.4 wireless mesh network for logistics applications
Eliminates the 300 foot (choke-point) limitation of active RFID
Allows continuous connections by hopping from node to node until reaching
a data gateway

Dynamic ad-hoc reconfiguration around broken or blocked paths

Automatic least-cost data routing switches mesh network to lowest cost data
gateway
KEY ADVANTAGES:

Cellular / Satellite
communication gateway

LAN or WAN gateway

1) Tags that talk to each other

2) Tags are internally powered router nodes
3) Reduced infrastructure required
4) Tags can have sensors and GPS

mist Mesh Network Features

A message can be passed in each direction every 2.5 seconds

Multiple queued messages can be sent each 2.5 seconds

Joining times under 5 minutes

More nodes present, the faster the joining times

Typical throughput is 500 byte per minute (maximum 2500 byte per minute )

Typically configured for 50 hops (50 hops * 200M = 10KM)

3-5 year battery life

Components and Architecture

Mesh Asset Tag (MAT) includes RF 2.4GHz 802.15.4 and GPS
with an integrated antenna and sensor subsystems. Sensors
include motion, Gs, temperature, humidity, multi-spectral light,
and door state.
Fixed Mesh Gateway (FMG) provides bidirectional backhaul
wired or wireless Ethernet connectivity; acts as the mesh
security authority; provides IP translation; is a portal for the
mesh configuration and control.
GS-5L: Mobile Mesh Gateway (MMG) provides secure
backhaul via satellite and cellular connectivity; acts as the
mesh security authority. Vehicle and refrigerated container
installation.
GS-5B dry container device may also serve as an intermittent
MMG. Use as MMG is limited due to limits of internal
power. Provides secure backhaul via satellite and cellular
connectivity; acts as the mesh security authority.

mist Mesh OEM Overview

CGTS currently has three mesh-based modules that are candidates
for 3rd party OEM:
1.

Remote Sensor Unit (RSU) with various sensor configurations

2.

Powered Radio Unit (PRU)

3.

PRU-USB

OEM candidate is a modified PRU with appropriate power, control, RF

and data interfaces

The PRU-USB may serve as an appropriate initial development

Using mist mesh technology, we will instrument the Port of

Singapore with as few as 62 mesh position beacon tags and 2
Fixed Mesh Gateways (FMGs).
This allows the continuous position tracking of all equipment and
containers without reliance on sky visibility for GPS.
