So what does my child need to learn this year? In March of 2015 the state adopted
the new South Carolina College and Career-Ready Standards. These standards
define the knowledge and skills in literacy and mathematics that children in
kindergarten through grade 12 need to be college and career ready for the 21st
century. While the foundations of mathematics have not changed, students will be
learning mathematics differently. Why? The world is changing everyday. Advances
in science, technology and communication make it necessary for students to learn
more about mathematics than just the facts. Students need to be able to solve real
world problems; explain their thinking to others; identify and analyze data; and use
technology. Consequently, your childs homework is changing. Your child will be
asked to explain how they solved a problem and why. Often your child will solve
problems using data and technology that are applied to real-world problems. Your
child will learn to communicate math ideas in writing and verbalize the steps used
to solve problems. Its all about helping students think while learning.
How can I help at home? Find ways to make every lesson or experience relevant to
your child! For example, during a trip to the grocery store, use labels and signs to
improve reading skills or weigh produce to focus on measurement. Have your child
count coins while waiting in line at the check out counter. You can even have a
lesson on fractions by choosing between items based on price per unit.

understand place value, learn number patterns and other math concepts:

Hello DFES Families:

We have been fortunate to have Harbison State Forest partner
with our school this year during our after-school program.
They have been coming out once a month to do environmental science activities
with our students free of charge. During our Spring Break we would like to give
back. Harbison State Forest is having a community service project. They will be
putting in a wildlife habitat garden. We hope you can join us on March 31st, from
9:00-1:00 at the Environmental Education Center at Harbison State Forest. Lunch
will be included. Please bring your favorite garden shovel and pair of gloves. If you
or your family can attend this event, please contact Amy Umberger at
aumberge@lexrich5.org so we can make sure to have enough food for you.

Extra! Extra! Read All About It!

Hide and Seek
With Books
Parents,
Please check
your cars,
homes and other places your
child visits for missing library
books! Some of our books
have been missing from our
shelves since September! If
you have any questions about
your childs library book status,
please call the Media Center at
476-3914.

The PTO goal for this school year is to raise $10,000

through fundraising donations to purchase books for each of
our classroom libraries at Dutch Fork Elementary School.
Children learn to read by reading! Our school needs 300-600
books per grade level with a variety of genres and reading
levels.
Do you know a business that can provide a donation? Businesses that
donate $150 or more will have their names displayed in front of the school and will
be recognized in our schools newsletter and on the website.
Please ask family members, friends, neighbors and coworkers to make a
tax deductible donation to our fundraising campaign. Students will receive prizes
based on the amount of money raised (DFES pencils, magnets, cups, drawstring
bags, and/or car decals).
We can accomplish this goal with the help of each parent and/or guardian.
We are asking each family to raise at least $100 in donations. You can make a
difference with each $1 that is given. Lets make a difference in the lives of our
precious childrenlets give them the books they need to become high reading
achievers!
Please submit all donations by March 24.

HELP!
Mark your calendars now and
considering volunteering! Our
Annual Field Day is Friday, May 20.
We are in need of parents to
volunteer to help us. The day is
divided into 2 sessions, 8:45-11:30
and 11:30-2:00. We could use your
help during either session. Please
contact Coach Russell or Coach
Geurkink at 476-3900 if you would
be able to help during this time.

Congratulations to Morgan C. and

Cara C. for representing DFES at the
South Carolina Elementary Honor
Choir on February 4-6! They were
chosen from over 500 students from
across South Carolina to sing in the
250 voice choir. They presented a
wonderful concert to parents and
other
music
educators.
Congratulations Morgan and Cara!

Box Tops for Education
Thank you to everyone who has sent in Box Tops
for Education. This is easy money to earn for our
school! We earn 10 cents for each Box Top. We
have earned $853.40 since April 2015. It all
adds up! Congratulations to 2nd grade! They
collected
the
most
Box
Tops
in
November/December and PreK/K in January/February! Check out the graph in the
cafeteria with all the results! Please continue to send your Box Tops. Please send
them to your childs teacher in a ziplock bag with your childs teachers name
written on the bag. We will send in one more collection in May. Thanks for your
help!!
