Earth Day marks new lead-based paint regs

DELPHOS — In honor of
Earth Day, the United States
Environmental Protection
Agency has introduced new
regulations for lead-based
paint. Beginning today, reno-
vation, repair and painting
contractors must be certified
and use lead-safe work prac-
tices when working in homes
built before 1978.
This is because lead is a
poison that can harm any-
one but children and unborn
babies are especially at
risk.
“Children and pregnant
women are most susceptible
to lead poisoning. The paint
has toxins in it that will inter-
fere with brain function; it
can cause brain damage and
behavioral problems similar
to ADHD and it can cause
learning disabilities. It is
absorbed by the bones and
at high levels, can cause sei-
zures and death,” said Celeste
Lopez, MD of Wishing Well
Pediatrics. “Children are
more prone to the brain dam-
age because it can only affect
a developing brain but the
toxicity can harm anyone. So,
an adult who is exposed can
die from it.”

on an MPV vehicle for trans-
porting small numbers of stu-

dropped by about a quarter, and
lead levels in the air are down
more than 90 percent. Formerly
fetid lakes and burning rivers
are now open to swimmers.
The challenges to the planet
today are largely invisible —
and therefore tougher to tackle.
“To suggest that we’ve
made progress is not to say
the problem is over,” said
William Ruckelshaus, who in
1970 became the first head of
the Environmental Protection
Agency. “What we’ve done is
shift from the very visible kinds
of issues to those that are a lot
more subtle today.”
Issues such as climate change
are less obvious to the naked
eye. Since the first Earth Day,
carbon dioxide levels in the air
have increased by 19 percent,
pushing the average annual
world temperature up about 1
degree Fahrenheit, according

environment, said Denis Hayes.
Those reforms, he added, grew
out of the first Earth Day, an
event Hayes helped coordinate.
“It is the most powerful,
sweeping, society-wide change
America has had since the New
Deal,” Hayes said. “The air
is cleaner despite the fact that
we have twice as many vehi-
cles traveling twice as many
miles.”
Nancy Sutley, head of
the White House Council on
Environmental Quality, said
progress in the past 40 years is
about more than just laws. It’s
also about innovation that made
cleaner cars. And that innova-
tion, Sutley said, “is going to be
the answer for tackling climate
change.”

On June 22, 1969, trash and
an oil slick ignited. The river
burned for half an hour, draw-
ing national attention to water
pollution nationwide.

by a doctor.

Wert, entered a guilty plea to
a charge of illegal use of food
stamps, a felony of the fifth
degree.
Judge Steele ordered a pre-
sentence investigation and
scheduled sentencing for 9
a.m. June 2.
Shane A. Carroll, 28, Van
Wert, admitted to violating
his community control and
was sentenced to serve a nine
month prison sentence he pre-
viously had been sentenced
to previously at which time
he was placed on community
control.
Judge Steele gave Carroll
162 days credit for time he
had served awaiting final dis-
position of the charge.
Samuel C. Haiber, 18,
Lima and formerly of Delphos,
was sentenced to 180 days in
jail and to pay a fine of $1,000
for violating the terms of his
community control.
Haiber had originally
been charged with criminal
damaging, a misdemeanor
of the first degree. Haiber
admitted to violating the
terms of his community
control by not reporting as
required by the terms of
community control.

John H. Renner, 85, of
Gomer, died at 8:45 a.m.
Wednesday at his residence.
He was born Feb. 28, 1925,
in Putnam County, to Oscar
and Jessie (Caskey) Renner,
who preceded him in death.
On Sept. 1, 1948, he mar-
ried Deloris J. Bellinger, who
survives in Gomer.
Other survivors include
three sons, Dennis (Mary
Kaplan) Renner of Columbus
Grove, David (Wanda)
Renner of Upper Sandusky
and Tom (Dawn) Renner of
Columbus Grove; a daughter,
Jolene (Tom) Brubaker of
Hamler; three sisters, Methel
Benroth of Bluffton, Margie
Bourne of Scottsdale, Ariz.,
and Norma Martz of Cairo;
nine grandchildren, Joe,
Ryan and Logan Renner,
Morgan and Garrett Renner,
Erin, Kelcey and Cody
Brubaker and Kirby Kaplan;
and four great-grandchil-
dren, Braydyn Brubaker,
Mason McGee and Kellen
and Cooper Renner.
He was also preceded in
death by two brothers, Orman
and Dale Renner; and two
sisters, Mary Humphreys and
Helen Lewis.
Mr. Renner worked as a
cook from 1944-46 in the
U.S. Navy. A lifelong farmer,
Mr. Renner was a member
of Gomer United Church of
Christ and was a Sugar Creek
Township Trustee from
1954-57 and 1972-91; served
on the Gomer High School
Board from 1965-69; was an
Allen County Fair volunteer
from 1949-86; president of
the Gomer Dad’s Club; and a
member of American Legion
Post 516 in Columbus Grove.
He was a 1944 graduate of
Gomer High School. He
loved old tractors and attend-
ing auctions but his true pas-
sion was farming.
Funeral services will begin
at 11 a.m. Saturday at Harter
and Schier Funeral Home, the
Rev. Brian Knoderer officiat-
ing. Burial will be in Pike
Run Cemetery, with mili-
tary graveside rites conduct-
ed by the Columbus Grove
American Legion Post.
Friends may call from
2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday
and one hour prior to ser-
vices Saturday at the funeral
home.

No matter how many new rules and regula-
tions we pass regarding the “Pirates of Wall
Street” and other members of the criminal
class, they will attempt to find ways around
them and many of their attempts will be suc-
cessful.
One of the problems is the enforcers of
these regulations consist to some extent — it’s
been to a large extent over past decades — of
people who some day are hoping their gov-
ernment training experience will lead them to
receiving the “Big Bucks” when they get out
of government. Many will join the ranks of
the Pirates or become lobbyists themselves.
So one answer is a clean sweep. Do the
best we can on reigning in the Pirates and also
go for a “temporary” tax hike. I’d put it at 80
percent for any individual earnings over one

I am writing to show my support of the
OSU Extension levy. I was involved in 4-H
for many years through which I gained friends,
knowledge, and experiences that I have been
able to carry throughout my life and will
continue to carry into the future. The count-
less projects taken, trips to the state fair, 4-H
camp, club trips to Pine Lake and 4-H Club
Congress have all shaped me to be the person
I am today.
OSU Extension not only allowed me to be a
part of 4-H but also gave me the opportunity to
be a summer intern working closely with and
learning from Andy Kleinschmidt. Through
this internship I was able to work closely with
area professionals as well as OSU profes-
sionals. The knowledge, professionalism, and
communication skills I learned through this
internship helped me excel greatly both in my
college courses and my professional career.
Without OSU Extension, its staff, and 4-H
I would not have had near the positive experi-
ences growing up that I did.

Dinner held its annual Survivor Dinner for
approximately 125 persons at St. Peter Lutheran
Church. The keynote speaker this year was
Julie Brickner, vice president of employee
relations for the Ohio Division of the American
Cancer Society. The 7th annual Delphos Relay
for Life will take place June 19 and 20 and
will begin with a survivor lap.
25 Years Ago — 1985
• At one time, three railroads served the pas-
senger and freight needs of Delphos and area.
Hoping to preserve and return to the area some
of this railroad history are members of the Fort
Jennings and Delphos Railroad and Museum
Inc. The group was formed in December 1984
with Robert Zephyr of Convoy, president and
Roland Calvert of New Haven, Ind., vice presi-
dent and general manager.

DELPHOS — One thing

have time to stew about a loss
or rejoice after a win.
St. John’s found that out
— this time for good — as
the Blue Jays were coming
off a tough MAC loss to St.
Henry the night before when
they hosted Bath Wednesday
night at Stadium Park.
It was a hard-fought battle
on the diamond but the Jays,
behind junior right-hander
Jordan Leininger and fresh-
man reliever Curtis Geise,
outscored the Wildcats 4-1.
St. John’s struck first
with 3-run third inning. Nate
Webb started it off in battling
for a walk off of a full count.
Geise laid down a sacrifice
bunt to move Webb but beat
the throw to first base and
now there were runners on
first and second. The top of
the order came back up and
Tanner Calvelage hit into
a fielder’s choice to force
Geise at second base for the
first out. Ty Bergfeld came to
the plate with runners on first
and third. Calvelage stole
second and Bergfeld’s sin-
gle moved him to third, with
Webb scoring the first run.
With Leininger up to bat, the
Jays executed a double-steal:
Bergfeld swiping second and
Calvelage taking advantage
of the throw there to swipe
home. Leininger singled to
score Bergfeld. Leininger was
nabbed trying to steal second.
Joel Pohlman singled to get
on base. With Chris Pohlman
up to bat, J. Pohlman was
caught leading off too far,
ending the inning.
In the top of the fifth
inning, Bath looked like they
might come back but was
only able to score one run.
Johny Simindinger got to
first base on an error and
proceeded to steal two bases

for us and Curtis came in and
closed the door for us. We
played very well overall and
I am very happy with how we

We seemed to have runners
on about every inning but
did not figure out ways to get
guys in,” Bath Coach Brian
Jesko commented. “I give St.
John’s pitcher (Leininger)
credit. He was challenging
our hitters and our hitters
were hitting a lot of fly balls
as opposed to ground balls.”
Bath falls to 9-7 overall
and plays Shawnee at home
on Friday (5 p.m. first

both. We had good defense
tonight but just had nothing at
the plate.”

Whether you are a begin-
ner gardener or just new to
growing vegetables, starting a
vegetable garden will enhance
both your pocket book and
cuisine. Nothing gives you a
better sense of accomplish-
ment than growing your own
vegetables.
For the first-timer, this may
seen like an overwhelming
task. You may find yourself
asking, “Where do I begin?”
One of the most common
errors people make is taking
on too much, too fast. Start
small and expand as your
skills develop. After all, it is
better to be proud of a small
garden, than frustrated by a

Oil rig survivors back on land; 11 missing

PORT FOURCHON, La. (AP) — Survivors
of a thunderous blast aboard an oil platform
off the Louisiana coast were being reunited
with their families at a suburban New Orleans
hotel early Thursday as the search for 11
missing workers continued.
About 100 workers had made it to a sup-
ply boat after Tuesday night’s explosion, then
were plucked from the Gulf of Mexico by
Coast Guard rescuers. After a slow-moving
trek across the waters, the workers final-
ly made it ashore at Port Fourchon earlier
Thursday where they were checked by doc-
tors and brought to a hotel in suburban New
Orleans to awaiting relatives.
“I’ve seen a lot of things, but I’ve never
seen anything like that,” said a visibly tired
worker, who declined to give his name as he
got in a car to leave.
The rig, where exploratory drilling was
being done about 50 miles off the coast
of Louisiana, exploded late Tuesday, send-
ing workers scurrying for safety. Seventeen
people were injured in the blast and taken
to hospitals, four critically, in what could be
one of the nation’s deadliest offshore drilling
accidents of the past half-century.
Coast Guard crews in two cutters have
been searching around the clock for the miss-
ing, said Coast Guard Lt. Sue Kerver. The
air search, which had been called off for the
night, resumed Thursday morning.
The rig is owned by Transocean Ltd. and
was under contract to oil giant BP.
Authorities could not say when the flames
might die out on the 400-by-250-foot rig,
which is roughly twice the size of a football
field, according the Transocean’s website. A
column of boiling black smoke rose hundreds
of feet over the Gulf of Mexico as fireboats
shot streams of water at the blaze. Officials
said the damage to the environment appeared
minimal so far.
Adrian Rose, vice president of Transocean,
said the explosion appeared to be a blowout,
in which natural gas or oil forces its way up
a well pipe and smashes the equipment. But
precisely what went wrong was under inves-
tigation.
A total of 126 workers were aboard.
Seventy-nine were Transocean workers, six
were BP employees and 41 were contracted.
The Coast Guard said the 17 taken by air or
sea to hospitals suffered burns, broken legs
and smoke inhalation.
According to Transocean’s website, the
rig was built in 2001 in South Korea and is
designed to operate in water up to 8,000 feet
deep, drill 5 1/2 miles down, and accommo-
date a crew of 130. It floats on pontoons and
is moored to the sea floor by several large
anchors.
Workers typically spend two weeks on
the rig at a time, followed by two weeks off.
Offshore oil workers typically earn $40,000
to $60,000 a year — more if they have special
skills.
Working on offshore oil rigs is a danger-
ous job but has become safer in recent years
thanks to improved training, safety systems
and maintenance, said Joe Hurt, regional vice
president for the International Association of
Drilling Contractors.
Since 2001, there have been 69 offshore
deaths, 1,349 injuries and 858 fires and explo-
sions in the Gulf, according to the federal
Minerals Management Service.
Stanley Murray of Monterey, La., was
reunited with his son, Chad, early Thursday
morning. His son, an electrician aboard the rig,
had ended his shift just before the explosion.
“If he had been there five minutes later,
he would have been burned up,” a relieved
Stanley Murray said.

Flights take off; ash limits Norway, Sweden The colors of the season

European airports sent thou-
sands of planes into the
sky today after a week of
unprecedented disruptions,
but shifting winds sent a
new plume of volcanic ash
over Scandinavia, forcing
some airports in Norway and
Sweden to close again.
The new airspace restric-
tions applied to northern
Scotland and parts of southern
Norway, Sweden and Finland,
said Kyla Evans, spokes-
woman for Eurocontrol, the
European air traffic agency.
But nearly all of the con-
tinent’s 28,000 other sched-
uled flights, including more
than 300 flights on lucrative
trans-Atlantic routes, were
going ahead. Every plane was
packed, however, as airlines
squeezed in some of the hun-
dreds of thousands of travel-
ers who had been stranded for
days among passengers with
regular tickets.
Airlines said there was no
quick solution to cut down
the backlog of passengers, for
most flights were nearly full
anyway and no other planes
were available.
“Quite frankly we don’t
have an answer to this,” said
David Henderson, spokes-
man for the Association of
European Airlines.
The weeklong airspace
closures caused by the ash
threat to planes represented
the worst breakdown in civil
aviation in Europe since
World War II. More than
100,000 flights were canceled
and airlines are on track to
lose over $2 billion.
The aviation crisis that
began with the April 14 vol-
canic eruption in Iceland left
millions of passengers in
limbo, and the uncoordinated
airspace closures by national
governments sparked calls
for a wholesale reform of
Europe’s air traffic manage-
ment system.
Some travelers got a
break. Authorities char-
tered a luxury cruise ship
— the Celebrity Eclipse —
to pick up 2,200 tourists in
the northern Spanish port
of Bilbao today and bring
them back to England. A
British Royal Navy ship also
arrived in Portsmouth, south-
ern England, carrying 440
troops coming home from
Afghanistan and 280 civilians
back from Santander, Spain.
Spain arranged for more
than 600 special flights —
including 316 on Wednesday
alone — to help move an
estimated 90,000 stranded
passengers out over the past
three days. Spain has become
a magnet for wayward travel-
ers because its airports mostly
remained during the crisis.
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines
and its partner carriers were
temporarily expanding capac-
ity on high-traffic routes from
Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport
in hopes of decreasing the
backlog. The routes included
New York, San Francisco,
Atlanta, Sao Paolo, Dubai,
Cairo, Singapore, Shanghai,
Hong Kong, Taipei and
Osaka.
In Germany, Frankfurt and
Munich airports reported that
about 90 percent of scheduled
flights were operating.
All of British airspace
was open and major airports
such as London’s Heathrow
— Europe’s busiest — were
operating nearly full sched-
ules. British Airways said all
of its flights from London’s
Gatwick and City airports
would take off, as well as
the “vast majority” from
Heathrow.
Many trans-Atlantic planes
between the United States and
Europe were assigned flight
paths above the ash cloud that
still covered the area east of
Iceland. Flying over 35,000
feet (10,670 meters) high, the
planes were well above the
current maximum altitude of
the ash.
The Swedish aviation
authority said airspace was
still open over the capital
of Stockholm, but closed
over the southern city of
Goteborg because winds did
not disperse the ash cloud
as forecast. Meanwhile, new
ash clouds were blowing in
over western Norway, where
Stavanger and Bergen air-
ports were closed.

Police seek couple who left boy at church

NEW YORK (AP) —
Authorities say a family cara-
vanning with a woman and
her toddler in Florida took the
3-year-old to New York after
the boy’s mother was arrested
on fraud charges, abandoning
him at St. Patrick’s Cathedral
with a note stuffed into his
hand bearing the name of a
detective working the case
and the words “call immedi-
ately.”
Eleanor Black, 29, was
identified through surveil-
lance footage at the cathedral,
police said Wednesday. She
and William Scott, 32, were
believed to have been the last
two people with Nathaniel
Fons, and they were also sus-
pected of being involved in
the counterfeiting operation
in Florida where his mother
was charged.
Police said Black came
to the famed cathedral on
Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue at
about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. She
asked at the information desk
to see a priest and was told
to go around the corner and
someone would come down,
police said.
She walked out of the
building, and a few moments
later, Nathaniel walked back
in, alone, clutching the note
that also had his birthday,
according to the security
guards who found him. One
guard raced out the door to
find her, but she was long
gone. Nathaniel, however,
didn’t seem upset, the guards
said.
“He was clean, dressed in
shirt, shorts, some sandals.
Very calm. ... He seemed like
a regular kid,” said guard
Roberto Plumey.
Plumey said he talked to
the boy about his favorite col-
ors and cartoons until police
showed up.
Nathaniel was in the cus-
tody of child services officials
in New York. His grandfa-
ther, Donald Fons, said from
his Land O Lakes home near
Tampa, Fla., that he didn’t
know when Nathaniel would
return.
“They said he’s fine. He’s
happy,” Fons said. “He is
happy and he is in good
health.”
“It’s just phenomenal. It’s
been a roller coaster for the
last three days,” Fons said.
Flagler County authorities
in Florida had issued a miss-
ing child alert for Nathaniel
on Sunday, after his mother
was arrested on charges of
operating a counterfeit money
operation. A convenience
store clerk reported receiving
a counterfeit $100 bill and
gave authorities a description
of the recreational vehicle
the suspects were driving,
Flagler County Sheriff’s offi-
cials said.
Authorities stopped the

New York, and arrested
Nathaniel’s mother Erin
Comeau, 26, on charges of
grand theft auto and organized
fraud. Another person in the

Irish bishop resigns, says he didn’t report abuse Trivia

Pope Benedict XVI accepted the
resignation Thursday of an Irish
bishop who admitted he didn’t
challenge the Dublin church’s
policy of covering up the sexual
abuse of children by priests.
Bishop James Moriarty of
Kildare is the third Irish bishop
to resign in the past four months
as a result of the Irish abuse
scandal, and two more have
offered to go. He said he was
stepping down because he real-
ized that “renewal must begin
with accepting responsibility for
the past.”
Moriarty, 73, offered to resign
in December after admitting
he didn’t challenge the Dublin
Archdiocese’s past practice of
concealing child-abuse com-
plaints from police. He served
as an auxiliary Dublin bishop
from 1991 to 2002.
“The truth is that the long
struggle of survivors to be heard
and respected by church authori-
ties has revealed a culture within
the Church that many would
simply describe as unchristian,”
Moriarty said in a statement.
“This has been profoundly
dispiriting for all who care about
the church.”
Two auxiliary Dublin bish-
ops, Eamonn Walsh and Ray
Field, have offered to resign as
well.
All three bishops were iden-
tified in an Irish government-
ordered investigation published
last year into decades of cover-
ups of child-abusing clergy in
the Dublin Archdiocese. The
report found that all bishops
until 1996 colluded to protect
scores of pedophile priests from
criminal prosecution.
There have been demands
for more Irish bishops to resign,
including for the country’s top
prelate, Cardinal Sean Brady,
who has been accused of help-
ing to cover up activities of
pedophile priests.
Brady has said he would
resign if he was found to have
endangered children by his
actions.
