Part B: Marking and Assessment
(to be completed by Module Lecturer)
This assignment will be marked out of 100%
This assignment contributes to 50% of the total module marks.
This assignment is un-bonded.
Details: Both assignments need to be passed to achieve the learning outcomes of this
module.

Background:
As an engineer trained in CNC machines you have been asked by a company to create
CNC Part Programme for manufacturing of parts on Computer Numerical Control machine
tool.
Restrictions:
The selected parts are given by the company in two files. Files are posted on the
blackboard under file names: NG3S226_Assignment_2015_2016_Parts_Turning.pdf
& NG3S226_Assignment_2015_2016_Parts_Milling.pdf
Assignment:
YOUR
Part
Numbers
are
given
in
the
File
Named:
NG3S226_Your_Part_2015_2016.pdf. Turning part has to be machined from an
appropriate Diameter (mm) stock mild STEEL bar. The bar comes in length cut in
advance. The stock material for milling is 2 mm bigger on X and Y axis, and 0.6 on Z
axis. Material is BRASS.
You are required as a first stage to create your CAD 3D models in SolidWorks. Before
developing manufacturing part you have to calculate properly your machining parameters
spindle speed, feedrate and step depths for every process you plan.
In your assignment report :
Comment on appropriateness of using CNC machine (lathe and milling centre) for every
part
a. Discuss the tool holding systems used on a typical CNC lathe
b. Discuss the drive systems on a lathe
c. Discuss raw material handling
d. Include appropriate diagrams
Discuss how software can help the production of part programs
Detail the processes of manufacturing for the selected part before CNC programming
Include the CNC part program
a. Save the full listing of the program in separate Text files
b. Annotate the program to explain detail in each special line
c. Pay attention to the correctness of the geometry of the part
All written submissions to be completed and appropriately presented.
A copy of the assignments files must be submitted by the deadline (17:00h). These
assignment cover sheets and the drawing of your selected part must be included at the
front of the assignment report. The files what you must submit on the Blackboard are:
1. ONE Word file Your report with all process planning and their parameters
calculations;
2. TWO files with Your parts created in SolidWorks (.sldprt) & SolidCAM (internal or
external - .prz) for your turning and milling parts;
3. TWO text files containing your generated part programs for turning and milling
parts.
Word count: 1500max - Words excluded from counting - all in tables and figures,
appendixes (use only if relevant) and the part programs generated.
Referencing: Must be included -Harvard referencing style must be used

Tips
You may find the functions you have learnt before are insufficient to achieve what you
want. Dont feel frustrated and try to explore the solution in:

1) All materials given to you on the Blackboard (especially those in the

Assessment folder pdf files);
2) The SolidWorks Help (highly recommended) or in World Wide Web.
This is a training of self-learning.

Learning Outcomes to be assessed (as specified in the validated module

descriptor http://icis.glam.ac.uk):
This assignment addresses the following learning outcome(s) of the
module:
Develop and critically evaluate 2/3D Manual and Computer Assisted
Part Programmes.
