Skill(s)
III.

: adding Integers

Value(s)
: collaboration and accountability
Procedure
A. Review
Teacher stimulates recall of previous topic among students by conducting a short
activity.
Using the definition of absolute value and the number line, answer the following:

1. +3 = ______

(Possible answer: 3)

2. -5 = ______

(Possible answer: 5)

B. Motivation
Quick Game!
Get the sum of the following as quickly as possible. Additional points are given to
the first 3 to get this done correctly.
796, 401.23
+ 203, 598.80
(Possible answer: 1, 000, 000.03)

C. Lesson Proper
a) Activity
The class will be divided into four (4) groups according to the color of their
name tags. The teacher will give each group the activity sheets including
the guide on how to answer the activity. Answers will be written on the
provided cartolina.
Addition Using Signed/Square Tiles
Study the following example.
The tile + represents integer 1, the tile

- represents -1, and the flexible

represents 0.
Recall that a number and its negative cancel each other under the operation of addition.
This means
4 + (-4) = 0
29 + (-29) = 0
Examples:
1. 4 + 5
1

+
+
1

Hence, 4 + 5 = 9

2. 5 + (-3)
+

Hence, 5 + (-3) = 2

3. (-7) + (-6)

10 1

Hence, (-7) + (-6) = -13

Now, try these:

1. (+3) + (+3)
(Possible answer)

Hence, (+3) + (+3) = 6

2. (-6) + (-3)
(Possible answer)

Hence, (-6) + (-3) = -9

3. (+4) + (-6)
(Possible answer)
+

Hence, (+4) + (-6) = -2

b) Reporting
The teacher will let the students to report each of their output. After
reporting will then check their work together with the reinforcement.
c) Drills
Teacher will ask somebody from the class to answer the following on the
board.
Add using signed/square tiles.
1. (-2) + (-1)
2. (+7) + (-4)
D. Application
With same group, each member should work together to answer the
activity. One student from the class will be called to answer the activity on
the board.
Add the following. Use the general rules in adding integers.
(18) + (-11) + (3) + (-100) + (50) = ____
(Possible answer: -40)

E. Generalization
The students will be asked to fill-in the graphic organizer below to encapsulate the
days topic.
Addition of
Integers
Ex. 1

Using
Square/Signed
tiles
General Rules

(+3) + (4)=_____

Rule 1

Ex. 2
(-2) +
(+2)=______

Rule 2

Example:

Example:

(-5) + (-5) =
___

(-10) + (+3) =
___

IV.

Evaluation
Answer on a sheet of paper.
Illustrate the sum of the following using signed tiles.
1. (+3) + (-4)
2. (+2) + (-2)

Find the sum.

V.

3. (9) + (-10) + (8)

4. (-1) + (-2) + (-3)
5. (5) + (23) + (-9)
Assignment
Get the sum of the following. Answer will be written on a sheet of paper.
(25) +(-96) + (52) + (-166) + (85) + (-4) + (50) + (-74) + (-8) + (10) = _______
