SETDA November 1-30, 2006

Now in its fourth year, NetDay Speak Up is an annual national research project that
collects the voices and views of key stakeholders in education on topics such as
educational technology, science, math, and 21st workforce skills. Over the past three
years the project has collected the viewpoints of over 562,000 K-2 students from all
50 states, as well as 26,000 teachers. For the first time this year we've also added
Speak Up for Parents!

SETDA is partnering with NetDay Speak Up with three specific goals:

1. To increase the Speak Up survey participation in all states.
2. To provide SETDA members with Speak Up data that can be used for state
level advocacy around education technology and/or for state and local
community engagement activities.
3. To increase national and local awareness of the value of including student,
teacher, and parent views on education technology in federal, state and local
planning and decision-making.

Why Your State Should Participate

• YOUR DATA Schools and districts that participate in the Speak Up survey have
free online access to the aggregated data from their own students, teachers, and
parents to use for planning purposes, program development and community
discussions about students, education, and technology.

As an incentive for your state to encourage participation,

If your state has at least 1% of your student population participate in the
survey, you will receive your state data report of your aggregate student,
teacher, and parent results in an Excel workbook at no charge.
If your state achieves 2% student participation we will also provide you
with 8 hours of consulting work, helping you use your state data to
support your key initiatives.

• A VOICE IN NATIONAL DIALOGUE Since 2003 NetDay Speak Up reports have

influenced federal, state and local policy discussions on education and technology
through Congressional briefings, reports for members of Congress, presentations
to federal agencies and participation in national conferences. By encouraging
districts in your state to participate, your state will gain a voice in this national
dialogue along with other innovating and forward-looking states. With all of the
funding and policy issues at stake around technology today, don’t let your state's
views be left out of this national advocacy effort.

ABOUT THE SURVEY
This year's survey will follow up on many of the technology issues addressed in the
2003-2005 student and teacher surveys. The major themes of this year's survey
address:
1. Opportunities and impact of technology on learning
2. Communications, self expression and social networking
3. Global Awareness and international collaborations
4. Science, math, national competitiveness, and workforce development
5. Schools of the future
The survey only takes 15 minutes to complete and all responses are 100% confidential.
We do not collect any identification information from your students with the exception
of gender and grade. No individual data will be shared with anyone.
The survey will be open for participation between November 1 and November 30. To
participate, a school or district simply registers their site online and then provides the
URL and secret password to access the survey. Students, teachers, and parents can
take the survey anytime, anywhere, anyplace with an Internet connection.

YOUR HELP REQUESTED FOR ENCOURAGING PARTICIPATION

We need your help in getting the word out to all of your schools. We would like to
ask you to use your direct link to all of the schools and districts in your state to help
us meet our goal of insuring that every student, teacher, and parent has a chance to
participate in the 2006 Speak Up survey. Here are some ideas that really worked for
the big participation states last year:
Post a message on your state ed tech listserv
Send an email to every school and/or district ed tech director
Have your Chief State Officer send a notice to every district superintendent
Put a link on your state education page
Send notice of this to your state partners – business groups, school board
groups, principal associations, teacher unions
Issue a press release about your state’s involvement in the national Speak Up
event
Put Speak Up on your state calendar of education events
Have your Governor mention it in an upcoming education speech

WHAT SPEAK UP TOOLS ARE AVAILABLE

The NetDay Speak Up website (www.netday.org/speakup) offers convenient tools for
participating districts. Tools include Speak Up How-to Guides for educators,
