1. Explain that the wave nature of a macroscopic matter does not affect any
properties, but it is very important in atomic scale based on the calculation of the
wave length of matter wave of (a) a ball with mass 300 g traveling at a speed of 20
m/s, and (b) an electron traveling at 8x107 m/s.
2. The Heisenberg uncertainty principle is important in quantum mechanics.
(a) State the equation of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle The Heisenberg
uncertainty principle.
(b) What is x for an electron with v = 0.03 m/s.
(c) What is x for a ball, whose mass is 0.20 kg, with v = 0.250 m/s.
3. Use the idea of Bohr model of hydrogen atom to derive the Rydberg constant, RH,
in the units of joule (J) and wave number (cm-1). Hints:
(a) The sum of electrostatic force and centrifugal force equal to zero.
(b) The total energy is the sum of kinetic and potential energies.
(c) The quantization assumption made by Bohr.

4. The core of quantum chemistry is to solve the time-independent Schrdinger
Equation (TISE). The 1 dimensional particle in a box (1D PIAB) is the easiest
problem for TISE.
(a) The solution, wave function, contains all information of the system. What are
the three boundary conditions for the wave function?
(b) Suppose that a 1D PIAB is built in the z direction with the length b and the
mass of the particle is m. First draw the box. Then solve the TISE for this box.
Note that the equation to be solved is a simple second-order differential
equation.

6. Use propionic acid as an example to show how you would analyze the NMR
spectra; in other word, try to sketch the NMR spectra of propionic acid.
(a) Using the molecular orbital model to describe the bonding predict the bond
orders and the relative bond lengths for these three molecules.
(b) How many unpaired electrons are present in each species.
