MEDICINES are substances that benefit the body in many ways:
1) Protecting the body and preventing diseases;
2) curing ailments
3) maintaining good health
DIFFERENT FORMS OF MEDICINES:
1) Oral Medicines - or medicines taken orally swallowed through mouth:
syrup (liquid)
tablets (solid)
capsules (solid)
2) Injectables - injected and go directly to the bloodstream
3) Skin medicines - applied to skin:
cream
ointment
4) Inhalants - absorbed through the lungs.
TYPES OF MEDICINES:
1) OVER-THE-COUNTER (OTC) MEDICINES - medicines that can be sold and bought is an ordinary store
without an order from a doctor.
These medicines are normally used to treat conditions that do not require doctors care like
flue, headache, and cold.
OTC MEDICINES are also called non-prescription medicines.
2) PRESCRIPTION MEDICINES - are medicines sold in a drugstore or pharmacy, and can only be
obtained with a prescription.
PRESCRIPTION - is an order written down by a medical doctor.
- contains details such as the name of the medicine, the dosage of quantity needed, and
instructions on how to take the medicine, the name of the patient, age, and patients contact
details; name, signature, license number and contace details of the doctor who wrote the
prescription.
Prescription s are needed to prevent people from misusing and abusing medicines. Some medicines
can have hazardous or dangerous efects on people when not used or taken properly.
THE MOST COMMONLY USED PRESPCRIBED MEDICINES ARE USED AS:
ANTI-DEPRESSANTS - treatment of depression and other conditions such as anxiety disorders,
eating disorders, etc.
ANTIBIOTICS - treatment of infections
ANTI-HYPERTENSIVE - treatment of high blood pressure
ANTI-HISTAMINE - treatment of allergies
NASALLY/ORALLY INHALED STEROIDS - treatment of asthma and other respiratory ailments.

C. MISUSE OF MEDICINES
happens when people resort to self-medication or taking medicines to address a medical
problem without first consulting a doctor or health care professionals.
the intent was to treat an ailment or medical condition but not according to the doctors
direction.
Example of misuse of medicines:
1) Taking more than the dosage prescribed by the doctor.
2) Sharing prescribed medicines with a family member or friend.
3) Using medicines from unknown sources. (buying from street vendores and online)
4) Using expires medicines.
ABUSE OF MEDICINE
When one takes a medicine because of the pleasant or high feeling one gets especially when
taking high doses of it.
It is considered abuse when one takes a medicine for reasons other than what it is meant for.
SOME OF DANGERS THAT CAN RESULT FROM THE MISUSE AND ABUSE OF MEDICINES:
1. Drug addiction
