A boy is opening a water bottle lid by twisting it. If the shear stress is 50Pa,
find the force applied. The inner diameter of the lid is 5cm and outer diameter
is 5.5cm. Used Figure Q2 as reference.

III.
A cylindrical steel pressure vessel was designed to hold a high pressure fluid
at 273K. The internal pressure of the vessel is 4.5 MN/m2. This pressure
vessel has an outer diameter of 400 mm and a wall thickness of 20mm.
a. Calculate the hoop stress and longitudinal stress in the steel vessel.
b. Calculate the maximum internal pressure in the vessel if the stress in steel
is limited to 120 MN/m2.
c. If the internal pressure were increased till the vessel burst, sketch the type
of fracture that would occur.
