A cement rod is compressed to a final length if 0.45 m by applying a constant
normal force of 110 kN. Given the Young Modulus of cement is 30 GPa.
a. Find the initial length of the rod

b. If the Poissons ratio, v is 0.32, find the final diameter of the rod,
considering the same constant load is applied.

A boy is opening a water bottle lid by twisting it. If the shear stress is 50Pa,
find the force applied. The inner diameter of the lid is 5cm and outer diameter
is 5.5cm. Used Figure Q2 as reference.

I.

A bronze bar 3 m long with a cross sectional area of 350 mm 2 is


stretched between two rigid walls with aforce of 15 kN at 25 oC. Find
the stress in the bar when the temperature is raised to 70 oC. Given
=18 m/moC and E=80 GPa.

Bending stresses could be compressive or tensile depending on its bending


location. State THREE (3) factors that causes bending stresses.

Describe pressure vessel in brief and give THREE (3)of its applications.

III.

A cylindrical steel pressure vessel was designed to hold a high pressure fluid
at 273K. The internal pressure of the vessel is 4.5 MN/m2. This pressure
vessel has an outer diameter of 400 mm and a wall thickness of 20mm.
a. Calculate the hoop stress and longitudinal stress in the steel vessel.
b. Calculate the maximum internal pressure in the vessel if the stress in steel
is limited to 120 MN/m2.
c. If the internal pressure were increased till the vessel burst, sketch the type
of fracture that would occur.
