Rockaway Republicans Hold Presidential Candidates Forum

Local Man Declares For Congress
a flat tax of 10 percent across the
board. He said his candidate has
also been the most consistently
pro-life candidate in the race.
Brian Morgenstern attended
on behalf of Rubio and said his
man is the only one who can beat
Democrat Hilary Clinton and is
a unifier. He said Trump faces
almost 60 percent opposition in
the Republican party and cannot
win the general election. He said
if Florida goes well for Senator
Rubio there will likely be a contested convention. (Post meeting note: Rubio finished in 2nd
in Florida on Tuesday night and
dropped out of the race).
Representing the Trump campaign was John Haggerty. He said
his man brings business experience that the other candidates
lack. He also defended the Republican party and said its often maligned unfairly. He noted
that the partys presidential candidates included a woman, an
African-American, and two Hispanic-Americans asserting that

the Republican party is far more

diverse than is often described.
Former Congressman Bob
Turner, now Chairman of the
Queens Republicans, was in attendance and said the Republicans plan to run candidates in
many state races and fundraising
will be a crucial component of all
races. The clubs coffers are somewhat bare now as only $3500 is in
the bank for the upcoming races.
The evening concluded with the
news that Mike OReilly, an attorney, former airline pilot, US Marine, and Broad Channel resident
will be running for the Congressional seat now held by democrat

Gregory Meeks. Meeks is expected to face a primary challenge by

State Senator James Sanders. It
remains to be seen if OReilly will
have to compete in a primary as
well. In November, 2015 he ran
for a judgeship. Although he did
not get elected he did garner more
votes than other republicans who
were vying for one of three judgeships, all of which went to democrats in the general election.
Alan Zwirn, president of the
Rockaway Republicans, was
pleased with the event. The
Rockaway Republican Club hosted this Candidates Forum to help
people make a better decision in
the voting booth in New Yorks
April 19 Primary Election. Feedback from many joining in the
meeting was that it was highly
informative and interesting, so it
hit the mark. The candidates representatives enjoyed the question
section, explaining their candidates positions in detail, and realizing how they shared the concerns of so many in Rockaway.

ROCKAWAYS FAT TUESDAY

Unless you live under a rock
or a four leaf clover you know
its Irish Season in Rockaway.
But its over tomorrow, March
18th. Fat Tuesday is the last
day of revelry for Mardi Gras
or Carnival. Its the last day
everyone can go a little nuts
and not be noticed. March
17th is like Fat Tuesday. It really marks the end of Irish Carnival in Rockaway. If youre
still celebrating St. Patricks
Day after the 17th, well, its
time to tone it down. Enough
already.
If you celebrate after St. Patricks youre just a blue sticker.
Remember them? If your house
was structurally sound after
Sandy the Buildings Department put a blue sticker on your
door or window. Some houses still have their blue stickers.

Enough already. We get it. Your

house is okay. Its three and a
half years. Jesus, Mary and Joseph took down their stickers,
its time you did, too.
But Im writing this before
last call so theres still time for
me to Go Green and remind us
all of some magically delicious
quotable quotes from the silver
screen and places unknown. In
Braveheart a man is asked if he
converses with the Almighty.
Well, the man says, In order
to find his equal, an Irishman
is forced to talk to God.
Of course, God makes his
way into many an Irish insight, some of which you have
to read twice to make sure you
get the gist, like this: God is
good to the Irish, but no one
else is; not even the Irish.
Thats the thing about a lot
of Irishisms: some of them are
like riddles and others seem
like they might have made
sense three centuries ago. I
think my grandmother used
to say, Saints preserve us.

Which I guess is kinda like

God help us, but the whole
preserving thing makes me
think of Walt Disney or Ted
Williamss head. I suppose
before cryogenics, the saints
did the preserving.
Samuel Johnson said, The
Irish are a very fair people,
they never speak well of one
another.
Which is the real reason the
Irish have such a hard time being politically correct. If you
speak ill of your family and
your best friends then whats
the matter with doing the same
of people you dont know?
The Irish and the politically
correct are often like chocolate chips and orange juice,
they just dont mix. And sometimes they shouldnt mix. The
PC police outdid themselves
last year at a Pennsylvania
college. Students demanded that Lynch Memorial Hall
have its name changed because of the racial and violent
overtones of the word lynch.

Im hoping my Lynch cousins in Skibbereen dont get

wind of that one. The building, in fact, was named after a
school president, Clyde Lynch,
whod helped steer the school
through the tough times of the
Great Depression.
God knows what my Irish
friends would call the students
who tried that genius move.
Itd be absent diplomacy, to
be sure. Oh, and what is Irish
diplomacy? Its the ability to
tell a man to go to hell, so that
he will look forward to making
the trip.
A fun bunch. But complicated. You know what Matt Damon, playing Colin Sullivan
in The Departed, said: What
Freud said about the Irish is,
were the only people who are
impervious to psychoanalysis.
As Irish Carnival winds
down I leave you with a toast:
As you slide down the banister
of life, may the splinters never
point the wrong way.

Doing The Bugalou

2 Grayriders Make Move To Produce Shows

Bugsy (left) and Lou (right) will be producing music shows in Rockaway.
Pictured here with Grayriders: John McNamee, Joe Kenel and former band
member Laszlo Kovacs.

The Grayriders, one of Rockaways more popular bands, have

been a mainstay of the local
music scene for over a decade.
Now, Grayrider members Keith
Bugsy Goldberg and Lou Pastina are about to improvise as
they launch their newest musical
venture. The two have formed a
company, Bugalou Productions,

to present concerts right here in

Rockaway.
The plan is to feature a nationally recognized touring act as the
headline performer, paired with
one of Rockaways many talented
local groups or solo artists. To test
this plan the duo plan to launch
their first concert this spring. The
focus will be on Classic Rock and

Soul artists, but the pair also expect their mix of shows to include
Folk/Americana/Indie Rock, as
well as Irish Music, and possibly
Country acts as well.
Pastina and Goldberg expect to
present artists that normally play
at venues such as City Winery
and BB Kings. Most national acts
naturally gravitate to Manhattan,
but there is a group of venues
that has sprung up in the tri-state
area. These venues have demonstrated the viability of presenting
live music outside of Manhattan,
but none are close to Rockaway
residents.
One of the major concerns for
concertgoers from Rockaway is
traveling back home afterwards.
If you drive, well there is parking, the time to get there, and
lets face it a ride home at night
that can be stressful. The alternative in this ferryless world is
an evening with a long or potentially expensive ride home by
train or cab. Removing these obstacles is a big part of Bugalous

plan, and they believe that for

many people in Rockaway, this
is the primary reason for not
enjoying more music events in
person.
Aviator Sports briefly presented a concert series a few years
ago, and the most successful one
paired the Grayriders opening
for Eddie Money. That event was
very well attended and gave the
duo the idea. They are currently
contemplating several interesting venue locations in Rockaway.
Bugalou is excited to potentially offer this opportunity to many
of Rockaways talented bands
and their fans, and expect this
dynamic will be the main factor
in their success and the enjoyment of fans.
Bugalou plans to launch their
venture with an initial concert
this May. A detailed announcement about the event is expected
within the next two weeks. If you
would like to get on Bugalous
mailing list, please email

In Touch With Tech

BY THE WAZE
By Patrick Morgan

Welcome to the Rockaway

Times Technology column. Im
a local resident and technology
is one of my many interests. In
talking to friends, relatives and
neighbors, there are a lot of useful applications, devices, games
and gadgets out there that people
dont know about, that can make
life easier and more interesting.
From time to time, this column
will cover whats new in technology, what you might try, tech comparisons, and the like. If you come
across a new app or technology,
or want to share something tech
related, feel free to send me an

------------------------------Did you know that New York
City ranked #5 in the Top 10
Worst Traffic Cities (per a 2013
study by INRIX, a traffic information and services group)? How
would you like to drive to your

destination and encounter the

minimal amount of traffic?
As you know, trying to drive
in and around the tristate area,
or anywhere else these days is
a challenge. Waze could be the
answer to that problem. Not
only does it save you time, it ultimately saves you money on gas.
(According to The Partnership
of NYC, New Yorkers spend $2B
in wasted fuel and other vehicle
costs annually).
Waze (pronounced ways), is
a free GPS-based geographical
navigation application (or app)
for smartphones and tablets. You
need to have an active data connection. It has display screens
which provides turn-by-turn
information and route details.
When you use Waze, you can
also actively report information
to the other users (a.k.a. Wazers) about things like traffic conditions, accidents, police traps,
blocked roads, weather conditions, potholes and much more.

Waze collects this information

and immediately analyzes it in
order to provide other Wazers
with the most optimal route to
their destination, 24 hours a day.
In a nutshell, Waze has these
big computers that take in all of
the real time traffic information
from other people using the service, analyzes tons of information, and quickly figures out the
best route to your destination. If
you dont like the primary route
that Waze suggests, you can click

on the Routes icon and choose

one of the alternate routes. Each
route will provide you the estimated time of arrival as well as
how many miles your trip will
be. Waze retains your destination history and also allows you
to save favorite locations, so you
only have to click on the address
instead of retyping.
You can also get a preview of
the steps in your journey by click-

Economics 101
WOULDNT IT BE NICE TO SPEND, SPEND, SPEND
By Tom Boggiano

How would it feel to be able

to overdraft your checking account as much as you
want for as long as you want?
Think of all the things you
could buy or places you could
see or people you could help.
However, we all know that if
we spend more than we have
in our account or more than
we earn, we must borrow
the difference. Our borrowing is typically limited to an
amount set by our lender,
whether it is a credit card,
mortgage, car loan, etc. But
there is one entity that seems
to have the ability to borrow and spend as much as it
wants and never have to pay
down the balance. That is the
U.S. Government.
Unlike each of the states in
the U.S., the federal government is not required to limit
its spending each year to the
SERVING THE
COMMUNITY FOR OVER
50 YEARS

amount it collects. The federal government has the ability

to run what is referred to as a
budget deficit when the president and Congress see the
need to outspend annual collections. In order to fund that
deficit the government issues
debt known as U.S. Treasury
securities. The concept is the
same as a family spending
more than its income each
year and using their credit card
to make up the difference. But
we know that at some point the
family has to pay the piper.
Although we would expect that
running a budget deficit should
be an exception and occur occasionally or even rarely, the U.S.
Government has run a deficit
every year, except for four, since
1990. And since 2009, the sum
of the annual deficits total about
$7.5 trillion meaning that in the
last seven years the federal government spent $7.5 trillion more
than it took in. Also, from 1990 to

FOR YOUR SPECIAL DINNER, HERE ARE A FEW IDEAS:

today, the government debt has

grown from $3.2 trillion to $19
trillion. Finally, the new budget
issued by the federal government
indicates that spending will exceed collections by $2 trillion
over the next five years.
This continual overspending
or lack of fiscal responsibility was
one of the reasons for the birth of
the Tea Party back in 2009.
How does the US
Government have the
ability to borrow endless
amounts of money?
In the waning days of World
War II at a conference of world
leaders, in Bretton Woods
New Hampshire, the U.S. dollar was designated as the reserve (or safe haven) currency
of the world. The objective of
the designation was to promote international trade and
fund postwar reconstruction.
This was a very important
designation and continues to
be to this day. The designation requires all international
transactions to be conducted
in U.S. dollars requiring foreign governments and foreign
corporations to hold U.S. dollars in their accounts. With
these dollars, these governments and companies typically purchase U.S. government
debt or Treasury securities. As
an example, China currently holds about $1.2 trillion of
U.S. Treasury securities. The
reserve currency status has
created worldwide demand
for U.S. Treasury securities
and is a contributor to allow-

ing the U.S. to seemingly issue

as much debt as it needs to.
Do we ever hit the
limit?
Many economists have tried
to assess how much is too
much debt and the impact of
large amounts of debt on the
health of the U.S. economy.
There are many opinions and
currently no concrete conclusions but what is clear is
that if interest rates increase,
the cost of interest on $19 trillion of debt will rise quickly
(if interest rates increase 2
percent the interest cost will
increase $380 billion per year
or close to 10 percent of the
governments 2016 spending of $4.0 trillion). There
have also been discussions
and actions taken by other
countries such as Russia and
China to end the U.S. dollars
reign as the reserve currency,
likely reducing the demand
for U.S. Treasury securities in
the future. If a major source
of demand is eliminated, the
interest cost of these securities will likely increase further.
So, although there is no discussion of this on the campaign trail or by any of the
senior members of Congress
or the president, I think we
all know that at some point
too much debt matters.
(Tom Boggiano is a lifelong
Rockaway resident, employed
in banking for 27 years and is
currently an investment manager.)

Blue Bloods In Broad Channel

Our own Frank Chimera was in

Broad Channel last week when
he came upon the cast and crew
of the TV show, Blue Bloods.
Our eagle eye salesman caught
actor Donnie Wahlberg sitting

in a van waiting for somebody

to yell, Action! We posted the
photo on Facebook and it turned
out to be a viral hit as it reached
more than 50,000 people. Imagine if it were an action shot !

HAPPY ST. PATRICKS DAY!

As a youngster I was blessed to

have marched up 5th Avenue on
March 17th alongside my grandfather with the Ancient Order of
Hibernians in several St. Patricks
Day Parades and in later years accompanied my father with the Police Departments Emerald Society
in numerous others. Additionally,
during my 30 years with the NYC
Department of Correction I am
proud of the fact that I marched

up 5th Avenue with the Correction

Departments Emerald Society in
over twenty St. Patricks Day parades! Since my retirement I have
managed to march in five additional parades but, as my knees have
since turned to rust, my marching
days are over. Sad as that may be,
its probably for the best as the last
parade I attended I may have imbibed a wee bit too much forcing
me to take a bus home. I know
that may not sound like a big deal
to you, but I had never driven a bus
before. My beloved Grace (aka: she
who must be obeyed) was none
too thrilled with that adventure
and immediately restricted all future St. Patricks Day travel on my
part to limping distance within
the confines of Broad Channel.
The new bulkhead at the end of
West 12th Road is fast nearing completion and on Monday, March 7th,
construction activity started on the
street itself to accommodate the installation of new sanitary and storm
waste lines as well as a new water
main feed for all homes. The street
reconfiguration, infrastructure and
raising work is expected to continue

for a minimum of nine months during which time all parking will be
prohibited on West 12th Road. The
bad news is the next nine months
will be noisy, dirty and long. The
good news is that, like the old Irish
blessing, at long last the road truly is
rising up to meet us!
I was at the All American Channel Market recently waiting for my
breakfast order to be filled at the
deli counter in the back of the store
when I was approached by a freckle-faced, green-eyed Colleen in her
early teens who asked me if I was the
...guy who writes the about bridges
in Broad Channel for the Rockaway
Times? Guilty as charged I responded and then asked her what
she thought about the column. She
thought for a second or two and
then said The columns okay, most
times it makes me laugh but to be
honest, I didnt think you would be
physically able to get out and about
so soon after your Valentines Day
column where you told everyone it
wasnt worthwhile to spend money
on a card, flowers and candy for the
wife! I chuckled, thanked her for
her candid response and assured

her that after an intensive intervention with the women of my household, the greeting card, floral and
confectionery businesses will all see
a substantial increase in sales in the
future.
I then inquired as to how she
liked the Rockaway Times newspaper in general. As she grabbed
her order from the deli counter
and started to walk away she remarked I think its great! I especially like the Fun Facts section and was really surprised to
read this week that Leonardo
Dicaprio invented the scissors.
I mean I know hes a great actor
but hes smart too! Nice meeting
you. Her reply left me scratching
my head all the way home until I
grabbed the recent (March 10th)
edition of the RT and located the
Fun Facts You Probably Dont
Need insert on page 15 where
I found the following fun fact Leonardo DaVinci invented the
scissors. God bless the Irish, if ya
love em raise your hands...if you
dont raise your standards!

The Lazer Speaks

SANDS POINT BUNGALOW THERAPY

By Lou Pastina

There are family and friends

who say I have needed therapy
for years, and maybe their aim
is not untrue, but recent events
have forced me to reconsider my reticence about therapy. The aforementioned were
mostly commenting about
psychological therapy; again,
their concerns were not misplaced, but I have been forced
into physical therapy due to the
bum knee, and have found it
not only to be helpful physically but noticed a knock-on psychological impact! How so, you
ask? I am glad you asked that
question.
After surgery I signed on at
Sands Point Physical Therapy. I
had done PT there prior to the
therapy and was very happy
with the staff and facility and
the workouts. I picked them
not just because they advertise
in this paper and the publish-

er said I could only patronize

advertisers (although), but
because Sands Point is on the
site of a row of former summer
bungalows I once frequented
almost forty years ago.
Those in the know would
remember this group of bungalows because, day or night,
there was always a party going
on. And they were unbelievable parties, the kind the local
law enforcement officials would
come back to after they got off
duty. There was always music
and some sort of bash going
on, singing and dancing, and
that was before breakfast. It was
too crazy for me to live there,
but I wanted to be close to the
scene and so I lived around the
corner in other bungalows.
This was the late seventies,
and it was still okay to have
fun. The people who lived there
called themselves Bungaloonies, and I thought that was the
best name ever. There was a

mixture of neighborhoods represented, some from Rockaway,

some from Greenpoint, and few
other neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens. Some of the
toga parties were the best. My
friends from Greenpoint are still
friends today, and its fun to see
pictures from those days. But
I have to tell you, I dont think
I ever learned anyones real
names from those bungalows,
everyone had a nickname.
Why is any of this relevant
you ask? Well the Sands Point
people are special people. They
have to deal with folks who have
just had surgery, or are scheduled for surgery, or for whom
surgery isnt an option and are
just trying to get some mobility
back. In other words, they deal
with cranky people. But the
thing is this there arent any
cranky people in Sands Point,
not the therapists, workers or
patients. There is always music
on too; they like Pandora. And

generally speaking, the music

is really good. And the Sands
Point people are always smiling
and have such a great rapport
with the patients that when you
leave, you feel like you spent an
hour with some friends cracking jokes, even though they are
making you stretch in ways you
couldnt before being injured!
I think I finally stumbled on
the reason for all this goodwill
and its not because the medication cabinet is left unlocked.
The head PT guy told me that
they have been in that location
since the place was built, and
that when it was built, the former bungalows were razed and
Sands Point was built on top of
them! So thats it, its the ghosts
of Bungaloonies past rising
up through the building and
infecting everyone with that
feel-goodness from yesteryear!
Brilliant! I am walking better
now; the only problem is the
odd urge to dress in a toga!

ing on the area above the map. It

provides turn information (left or
right), distance until the next turn
as well as the name of the street
or highway that you will be turning on to. Another great feature is
that Waze will update your route
in real time based on current traffic congestion reports it receives.
It will then change your original
route so you can avoid a situation
that would delay your journey.
The settings icon allows you
to customize your Waze experience. If you have a Bluetooth enabled car, you can play the voice
instructions through your sound
system. A popular setting is the
choice of voices. Jane is the default voice setting, who provides
you with the most detailed directions. You can have some fun
with Waze and choose celebrity
voices like Morgan Freeman and
Colonel Sanders.
CNET and PC Magazine, publications that track all the latest
consumer technologies, both
give Waze a rating of 4 stars out
of 5. CNET likes the reliable traffic accuracy, but not the user interface (how the app looks and
feels). PC Magazine likes the accurate, easy-to-read maps but
doesnt like the fact Waze doesnt
tell you what lane to be in.
There are similar free apps like
Google maps (which may have
already been loaded onto your
smart device when you purchased it) and MapQuest. But
Waze has more reviews and is
rated higher.
The downside of using Waze is
that it consumes battery power as
well as eats away at your mobile
data plan. According to the App
Monitor website review, Waze
used more than twice of a data
plan on an Android device and
drained the battery life slightly
more than Google maps app. In
order to counteract the power issue, make sure that your phone
or tablet is plugged into the power outlet in your car. Another tip
is to turn off the Waze app once
you know the rest of your trip will
not encounter traffic.
My suggestion is to download
the app and try it since it is free.
Use it around the neighborhood
to get used to its look and feel. If
you dont like the app, then you
can simply delete it.
Once you start using Waze,

The Rockaway Times

dont doubt its decisions. On a
trip into upper Manhattan last
year, I decided to ignore the
Waze directions (which I thought
would take me out of the way)
and I ended up in a major traffic
jam. Lesson learned.
However, Waze is not always
perfect. One time, it did provide
me with bad directions. But considering all of the time and money and aggravation it has saved
me, it is well worth it. Plus it is
free and there are no pop-up
ads to distract you.
The Waze app is available for
iPhone and iPad, Android and
windows phones. Please go to
the appropriate site or store on
your device and enter the app
name in the search field. There
are also help videos on YouTube
that you can access.
Once you download the app,
the registration process is simple.
Open the Waze app icon on
your phone or tablet.
In order to use the app, you
must accept the license agreement by scrolling down.
Enter your phone number and
tap Next.
Enter the verification code and
tap Next.
Create your profile by adding
your photo and full name. Tap
Next to proceed.
Create your profile. Waze will
generate a username for you
automatically. Feel free to keep
it or change it by simply tapping on the name to edit. Keep
in mind, your username is
unique and public, and can be
seen on the map by other users
along with your Wazer. Click
Next to proceed.
Waze does not automatically
require you to create a password for your account. It is recommended that you create a
password for long term use or
to log into your dashboard.

Funding for Rock

Beach Rail Line Study
Proposed
In what will come as welcome news to many Rockaway residents and transit
activists, Assemblyman Phil
Goldfeder has secured funding for a feasibility study of
the Rockaway Beach Rail Line
in this years State Assembly
budget proposal. For years it
has been argued that the reactivation of the half-century
dormant railway could improve commuting times for
residents and encourage more
city dwellers to visit the Rockaways and during the summer
months, as well as an easy way
to get to JFK Airport.
With so many families in
Queens suffering through
some of the longest commutes in the city, its important that we explore every
option to improve transportation. A feasibility study of

reactivation the Rockaway

Beach Rail Line will do just
that. This study will provide
us with an accurate picture of
the state of the line and show
not just what it would cost to
reactivate, but also the impact
this would have on thousands
of commuters in the community, Goldfeder said.
A Goldfeder press release
said that With the study,
Goldfeder expects the MTA
to assess the current condition of infrastructure along
the 4-mile right-of-way, as
well as the full cost of reactivating the line for passenger service. Goldfeder also
hopes that the study will
weigh in on the benefits of
reactivation, including potential ridership and the
economic benefits to surrounding communities.

Friends of Rockaway
SURVEYING COMMUNITY
NEEDS
From mid-March to the end
of June, volunteers and staff
members of Friends of Rockaway will be knocking on
doors between Far Rockaway
and Breezy Point to survey
properties on the peninsula.
Three years after Hurricane
Sandy, many homeowners
still have repair needs and
knocking on doors is a way to
identify them.
Friends of Rockaway plans
to use parcel-mapping technology to survey the community and ultimately identify all properties in need of
repair.
Friends of Rockaway representatives will be out between
9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday
through Friday and some Saturdays. All representatives will
wear volunteer identification.
Since Sandy, Friends of
Rockaway has repaired over

145 homes for low-income

homeowners whose properties were damaged by the
storm. The ultimate goal is
to close out recovery in the
Rockaway and surrounding
communities.
Friends of Rockaway is a
community-based non-profit organization founded in
response to the devastating
effects of Hurricane Sandy
on the Rockaway Peninsula. Now operating as part of
St. Bernards Project 501(c)
(3) designation, Friends
of Rockaway is rebuilding
homes for Sandy survivors
who were displaced after the
storm.

SO YOU THINK YOU KNOW THE

A TRAIN?
THE SUBWAY LINE FROM A TO Z

By Thomas A. Tuna

The unprecedented disaster known as Superstorm

Sandy took its terrible toll on
Rockaway residents in many
and varied ways--not the
least of which was the confirmation of the fragility of life
on the peninsula.
And perhaps one of the
most obvious examples of the
relationship of local residents
to the rest of the borough and
the city in general was the
extensive damage to the peninsulas major transportation
arm: the A train that carries
thousands of locals back and
forth from the Rockaways to
Manhattan every day.
As everyone knows, the
subway line that stretches
from Howard Beach to the

Rockaways was completely out of commission due

to Sandys watery wrath for
several months in late 2012,
with full service not being restored to a grateful populace
until May 2013.
With all the attention
placed on the importance of
the A train to the Rockaways,
one may think theres nothing about the line that hasnt
been thoroughly discussed
and dissected. But, you might
be surprised to learn that
the A train--and its long and
winding history--may have a
few surprises left in it.
With that being said, lets
take a look at a few historical
nuggets regarding the popular and, at times, frustrating means of transportation
known as the A train.

1) First off, the A train goes

way back. Did you know
that the bulk of the A train-known simply as the Rockaway Line back in the day-dates back to the 1880s when
it was owned and operated
as the New York, Woodhaven and Rockaway Railroad?
And, in fact, the Far Rockaway station had been in operation since 1869 as part of the
South Side Railroad of Long
Island.
2) We also have a Brooklyn connection. In the late
1890s, the Brooklyn Elevated Railway--later known as
the Brooklyn Rapid Transit
Company--got
permission
to operate elevated trains on
the line from Kings County to
give residents access to the
Rockaway beaches.

3) And did you know the

entire line was almost mothballed in the early 1950s? A
very serious track fire crippled the line in 1950, gutting
the Raunt and Broad Channel
stations and destroying the
trestle that spanned Jamaica
Bay. As a result of the conflagration, the whole line was
looked on as useless. Instead
of effecting repairs, the LIRR
wanted to abandon the line
in favor of its land route to
Far Rockaway through Nassau County.
4) Bridging the gap from
mainland to peninsula was
key to saving the line. The
city bought the line in 1955
for the princely sum of $8.5
million and, as part of the

REALLY?
So an article came out in the
latest release of Surfing Magazine, The 10 Most Important
Waves In America, they go on
to write To be clear, its not
Best Waves because every
dog has its day its Important
Waves.Weve chosen waves
based on their modern-day impact, and have a guess which
beach got the top honors?
LONG BEACH, NEW YORK!

And heres why they got

the pick : Its the best wave

close to the most important

city in the world. If you
like big cities and hypothermia, youll love Long
Beach. Situated just one
hour from The Big Apple,
the south-facing beaches of #LongBeachNYnotCA turn most wintertime
swells into a teepee-filled
tube fest.
Last time I checked, we
get larger waves as we face
more east, as well as being significantly closer to
NYC, well hell, we actually

The Rockaway Times

are NYC! I kinda hope this

makes some people mad,
or at least a little pissed off
how we get overlooked and
start questioning why it is
so. And let me take a stab as
to why we get overlooked,
maybe because theres very
little support for surfing
here in Rockaway except
by the businesses that are
here because of surfing or
started by surfers. Even David Selig, owner of Rockaway Taco said to me a few
weeks ago about new surfing beaches being so hotly
contested, Rockaway Taco
would have just been some
old regular taco place if it
hadnt been for the surfers coming out with their
friends and blowing it up
like it did.
And Ill leave you with
this other story that just
happened. With cyclone
(hurricane) swells hitting
the Queensland coast in
Australia for near-on two
months, a local expert in
the matter of surfonomics, Dr. Neil Lazarow used

ADVANCED MATH
& SCIENCE IV

research that valued local

breaks to be worth a combined $233 million annually writes the Goldcoast
Bulletin. So he went about
calculating what that span
of two months worth of
waves were worth, he said
the $20 million came on top
of the $40 million the surfing industry was worth in
those two months. The paper goes on to write: Locals, he estimated, spent
an additional $14 million
in eight weeks while visitors spent an estimated
$4.8 million surfing more
often due to waves from
ex-tropical cyclones Tatiana and Winston and a few
good southerly swells.
He said the visitor dollars were the most valuable
for the city.

CURB THESE OFFICERS

Dear Editor:
On Thursday, March 10th I was
issued a summons by the NYC
Parks Department Enforcement
for having an unleashed dog on
the beach. While I realize I was
breaking the law I feel this
harassment is unfair.
I had been on the beach for
less than a minute when I saw
the officers writing a ticket to my
neighbor. Note: the beach was
EMPTY except for my neighbor
and the two officers. I could have
taken my dog and run off the
beach, but I chose to cooperate.
I was told I was observed with
my dog off the leash, and I politely

THURSDAY, MARCH 17, 2016

asked them for a warning. I had
not been on the beach with the
dog in over a month, and I went
down to look at the water. In
hindsight, I should have kept
her on the leash until I got over
the dune, but she wanted to sniff
around the wall and I proceeded
to the top of the dune.
I know there are bad dog
owners who dont clean up after
their dogs, but 99 percent of
dog owners clean up after their
pets. We also clean up any other
dog waste we find, as well as the
garbage we see. We bring our dogs
to the beach for exercise and to
socialize. A socialized dog that is
tired out is a better dog. I have met
more neighbors the past 12 years
because of our dogs. It makes us
better neighbors, too.
I personally have cleaned up
beer cans/bottles and other
debris left behind by others. The
fencing around the dunes has
been destroyed by teenagers
making fires over the winter, and
they have left behind dangerous
wires and broken glass. I dont
understand why the dog owners
are the bad guys but I can make
a guess as to why were being
singled out.

The Rockaway Times

Parks Department personel on an empty beach looking for the owners of

unleashed dogs.

The Parks Department is

obviously profiling a certain
segment of dog owners and I think
its unfair. I also believe that a $100
fine is an unreasonable amount.
I am not going to fight this ticket
but I am going to use it to make
a point. The Parks Departments
management of Rockaway Beach
has been lackluster for years. They
dont put out enough garbage
cans, they dont clean out the
cans in a timely manner (allowing
the seagulls to spread garbage all
over the beach), and there are
no recycling cans. Their orange
garbage trucks speed along the

beach, as do their beach ATVs.

Since they observed me violating
a law and didnt give me a
warning, Im going make a lot of
observations on my own.
If the Parks Department needs
to raise money, then I fully
expect them to enforce ALL laws,
including those committed by
people down for the day. I expect
tickets written for people smoking
on the beach, litter bugs, pot
smokers, etc., and I expect these
rules to be enforced in ALL areas of
Rockaway, not just the perceived
rich areas. More than anything,

WE GET EMAIL

Continued from Page 20

I expect the Parks Department to
manage Rockaway Beach in a way
that it deserves to be managed.
Trucks should not be speeding,
even if the beach is empty. Trucks
should not bypass garbage in the
sand. More garbage cans in every
area of the beaches, not just one
single line across, spaced out 1 or
2 per beach, should be common.
I have already contacted
Mitchell
Silver
with
my
complaint. But I would also
appreciate it if you could
discuss this with our local Parks
Department representative. I

think we also need to investigate

creating legal dog hours early in
the morning on the beach. This
harassment and profiling needs
to be stopped.
Thank you for your attention to
my email. As always, I appreciate
all you do for the peninsula.
Kelly Kelley

DOG OWNER FOLLOW UP

This is a follow up to yesterdays

email. I walked the beach this
morning from Beach 131st to
Beach 136th streets. The amount
of bottles, cans and garbage
in the sand between Beach
132nd & Beach 133rd and again
on Beach 135th is appalling.

Theres another problem besides unleashed dogs that needs attention.

Page 21

I reported the litter and fence

destruction to 311 and was told
Parks would respond within
three days, but I expect this to
be taken care of ASAP since the
glass, burnt wood and wires
pose a dangerous condition. In
the past, I would have done my
best to clean this up, but since
Parks has made us (i.e. dog
owners) out to be the bad guys,
they have lost my cooperation.
Consider this one of my new
observations. I expect these
litterers and property destroyers
to be dealt with in the same way
you have chosen to go after the
dog walkers. This nonsense takes PEP officer issues summons to
place every weekend and is more woman whose father just died.

Howard Beach, did you know
that the first official A train
that left Howard Beach for
the Rockaways on June 28,
1956 (at 5:30 p.m. for those
interested) sported a Rockaway, Here We Come banner that stretched across the

All the citys construction led
to the opening of all stations

the end of the line in Far

Its official. Hornblower,

Inc. will be the operator of
the citywide ferry system.
The operator says the service will be available by
summer 2017. The system
will include 21 landings
across the city and will fully
integrate the East River Ferry service. The citywide service is projected to make 4.6
million trips a year.
Hornblower has operated in the New York Harbor
since 2007. As part of the
service, Hornblower will
be delivering at least 18
new boats, which will be
equipped with Wi-Fi and
engines that meet the highest EPA standards. All docks
and boats will be fully compliant with the Americans
with Disabilities Act. The
boats will be able to carry at
least 149 passengers.
The new citywide service
will generate at least 155
new jobs. Hornblower is a
unionized employer, which
will offer wages above $15
an hour, along with bene-

fits. The company will work

with WorkForce1 training
centers to hire employees.
For the price of a single
subway ride, tens-of-thousands of New Yorkers are
going to have a new public
transit option linking them
to jobs, education and opportunities across the city,
Mayor de Blasio said. We
are selecting an operator
with an incredible track record providing service in
our harbor. We look forward
to launching with Hornblower next year.
The New York City Economic Development Corporation held a yearlong procurement process to select
the operator, starting with
an RFP in 2015. NYCEDC
selected Hornblower on the
basis of its ability to provide
the highest quality service
at the best value to taxpayers.
Hornblower is honored

tion network that will make
commuting and connecting
easier, Terry MacRae, CEO
of Hornblower, said. We
have already begun work to
deliver a ferry system by the
summer of 2017 which will
revolutionize the way New
Yorkers work, live and play,
and we are confident this
new system will become a
local favorite for decades to
come.
Local officials said the
announcement is a good
step forward. Every step
forward in the citywide ferry plan is a step towards
providing our families with
the transportation equality we deserve, Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder said.
I commend president Torres-Springer and EDC for
their leadership in this effort, and I wish Hornblower many years of successful
service to our community.

vice is progressing, and on
behalf of my constituents,
I want to thank the Mayor
for keeping his promise to
return ferry service to the
Rockaways,
Councilman
Eric Ulrich said.
Joe Hartigan, a local longtime ferry activist responded to the news, saying some
things need to be accomplished before the ferry
service launches. I want
to see the boats. Theres a
show on T V called Married
at First Sight. Are we gonna have a ferry service at
first sight? I want a demo
run with all elected officials beforehand. I want an
adjustment to the schedule
with arrival times of 6:30
a.m., 7:30 a.m. and 8:30
a.m. for the morning commuters. Hartigan also expressed concerns over details reported in a February
2016 Crains article which
claimed that Hornblower
doesnt have enough time
to build the boats it would
need by 2017. The EDC said
the company could charter

additional boats initially.

Despite the concerns, Hartigan commends the mayor for his efforts to bring
back the ferry. This is the
biggest investment in Rockaway that any mayor has
done in the last 50 years
and I give him praise for
doing it, he said.
The

Brooklyn and Astoria routes
will be the first to launch in

Street, but free transfers
will be available to other
ferry systems. The ferry fee
will be $2.75, but it will not
connect with the MetroCard
system, so there will be no
free transfers to the bus and
subway system. Paper and
smartphone tickets will be
available for purchase by

Discounts will be available

Diary Of A Fat Man

Training Needs A Personal Touch
By Bruce Bernfeld

Give me two more. The

words that you really dont
want to hear, especially when
your muscles are burning like
a bonfire and you dont know if
you can ever move again. But...
Then you hear You can do it,
and you know what? You dig
deep and you do one! And then
you hear: You got it and you
know what... You do and the
second one comes easier!
Where are these words coming from?
Who the hell is pushing me
through the pain for my own
good?
Well, in my case, they are
coming from the mouth of
Joey Calvani , a 22 year old, 150
pound guy who happens to be
my fitness coach and is working side by side with me and is
an integral part in my journey
to get into shape. (Notice... I
didnt say BACK into shape... I

was NEVER in shape...NEVER!

And that NEVER encompasses
almost 70 years. (Well truthfully when I was 6 months old
I did have amazing quads from
extensive crawling!)
That brings me to another
benefit of working out with a
trainer. Im developing a whole
new vocabulary: Quads, Pecs,
Delts, Biceps,Traps. And... new
meanings to old words like
Burn and Dig and We!
We is the most important,
because Joey makes it feel like
he is on the journey right beside me. A twenty two year old
kid who yesterday said to me
that the pride he feels in my accomplishments makes him feel
like a parent!! A parent of a 69
year old!!!
We can do it. We can do
three more.
Sure, there is a method to his
madness. But, after only a couple of workouts I bought into it
completely and that is a great

strength he has. He not only

makes you feel he has your interests in mind.... HE DOES.
Personal training is more
than just putting someone
through a tough workout; its
learning how to become a mentor, a motivator, and a friend.
Its finding out what makes
people tick, what drives them
to succeed, and, perhaps most
importantly, what limits their
capabilities.
What should one look for
in a fitness coach/ personal
trainer?
Finding a personal trainer
who makes you feel comfortable enough to expose your
biggest flaws is important. But
theyre called personal trainers for a reason -- theyre there
to guide you to your personal
fitness goals, and to do so, they
need to fit with your personality Joseph fits mine to a tee.
We seem to be on the same
wavelength all of the time.

You would think that a old guy

pushing 70 and a young man
of 22 would not have much in
common but we do. Two years
ago Joey was a 200 pound out
of shape kid, playing video
games and eating entire pizza
pies. Much like me, he woke
up one day and said Enough.
His journey mirrored mine (
except he is now well sculpted and strong, and Im still a
flabby mess.) But sharing this
commonality makes training
that much more satisfying! I
do not think I am a masochist,
but I actually look forward to
my workout sessions. Well... a
little.
Im certain that without
much hassle you can find a fitness coach in Rockaway that
would be great to work with. I
was lucky enough to find him
here in Hallandale Beach. Or
if you want, you can move to
Florida ( or at least spend the
winter here!!)

The letter to Tyler read: Thank
you for writing. I appreciate hearing from you, and I am grateful for
the opportunity to offer a few words
of encouragement. Sometimes, we
face challenges that seem almost
impossible to overcome. When
you find yourself struggling, be reminded of the founding promise of

to love and be loved, to work hard

achieve your dreams. Sincerely,
Barack Obama.
I was so happy and surprised
that he wrote back to me, Tyler
said. The next day I showed it
and read the letter to my class and
they were also really surprised.
The returned letter was not
even Tylers first interaction
with President Obama. In 2013
Edwin and Tyler got the opportunity to greet the president as
he was leaving Air Force One

at JFK Airport. Tyler was right
in front at the time and got to
shake the presidents hand!
Edwin said.
Inspired by their interactions
with the countrys leader, the
Williams family is planning to
take a trip down to Washington
D.C. in the near future and will
stop at the White House with
the hopes of formally meeting
the president. I want to take
Tyler on the whole tour of D.C.,
the national mall, the Capitol,
everything, Edwin said.
Tyler already has a clear idea
of what he would say to the
president if he gets the chance.
If I meet him in the afternoon
I am going to say Good afternoon, Mr. President, and Ill
stick out my hand so he can
shake it. Ill wait and see how
he responds. Tyler said he
would also reiterate many of
the points that he wrote in his
letter to Obama. I would like
the president to feed poor people, to add stuff for them to
have a good life. I want him to
stop wars, stop people from dying, and make America a very
good country to live in.

New York Arbor to Debut

First Exhibit
Spring is about the birth of something new, growth and beauty and
on Sunday, March 20, the Spring
Equinox Rockaway will celebrate
those things with the opening of
New York Arbor. The brand new artists-run center at 114-07 Rockaway
Beach Boulevard will debut its inaugural 2016 Spring Equinox exhibit.
On Sunday, from 12 p.m. to 5
p.m., George Turner will officially

New York Arbor will be and to establish our brand and bring an understanding of what an artists-run
center is, Turner said. Im hoping
people are welcoming of spring
and celebrate this theme and this
natural good vibe that I want to
promote. Visitors will be washed
over with beauty and will experience a nice feeling as theyre surrounded by beautiful things and
people who are trying to bring
more beauty into the world.

open the doors to New York Arbor, exposing all who stop by to
the beauty of spring as interpreted
by various artists in different mediums. Turner will reveal the six
months of work he put into transforming The Creative Clown studio
into New York Arbor, a venue for
emerging and experienced artists
to grow and share their works with
the peninsula.
New York Arbors exhibits will
flow with the seasons and the first
one is a celebration of the Spring
Equinox. The eight-week display,
from March 20 to May 15, will feature the works of Eve Ackroyd, Alice Elisabeth, Janina McCormack,
Amanda Ratner, Robert Sarnoff,
Joel Stoehr, Emma Swanson and
Pamela Williams. The artists range
in age and level of experience and
come from different backgrounds.
Among the mediums are painting,
drawing, quilting, and woodworking in the gallery and there will
also be photographs, jewelry and
wooden creations available in the
front retail space. Sundays opening reception will be a simple affair
that will focus on the artwork as
visitors become acquainted with
the venue for the first time.
This inaugural exhibit is a way
to introduce ourselves and show
people what kind of art gallery

Although a painter and woodworker, Turner wont have his own

art on display, but says the work
he has put into the space since he
bought it in September, serve as his
contribution. Turner transformed
the once open studio space into
a gallery by making the partitions
and display walls himself and dealing with the general headaches of
starting a new venture. Getting this
done is my contribution. My art is
my effort for a greater cause and that
cause is to bring beauty to the world.
Once I started hanging the artwork
this week, it felt amazing. The color
and creativity of the pieces and the
beautiful people who created them
made me feel really good. It made it
all worth it, Turner said.
If you miss the opening reception on Sunday, youll still have
plenty of time to check out the artwork. The spring exhibit will be on
display until May 15. The gallery
is open from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on
Tuesdays through Fridays and 12
p.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. Turner hopes the spring exhibit will
inspire others to contribute to the
next show, which he expects to be
even bigger. The next exhibit will
be a celebration of summer and
will begin on June 20. For more

RFP Released to Study

Eastside Ferry Access
The city is listening to requests
for ferry access on the east side of
the peninsula. The New York City
Economic Development Corporation (EDC) released a Request
for Proposals for a consultant to
study the feasibility, ridership
potential and level of community interest in ferry terminal locations west of Beach 84th Street
and the improvements needed
to construct a permanent ferry
terminal.
The RFP would require the
consultant team to conduct a
project consisting of site selection and scoping; design;
environmental review, permitting, and approvals; and
construction assistance. EDC
anticipates the first phase of
the project to start by May
2016 and be completed by
March 2019. The total project cost is estimated to be
$3,300,000. This money comes
from the $15 million that was
earmarked for the ferry by
Congressman Anthony Weiner
in 2005. The funding secured
for this project was a result of
the advocacy of Congressman
Gregory Meeks.

I welcome the announcement

of a Request for Proposal (RFP)
by Mayor de Blasio and the New
York City Economic Development Corporation, which signals
the early stages of finally welcoming back the Rockaway Ferry to
our communities, Congressman
Meeks said. It has been a little
over a year since the last ferry left
the Rockaways bound for Manhattan and our communities
know first-hand what a successful ferry service can mean for
expanded job opportunities off
the peninsula and reduced congestion and commute times. I
have long advocated for the permanent extension of the Rockaway Ferry system and believe
that this essential travel option
will ensure that all residents have
an additional option for getting
back and forth to work, shopping,
sight-seeing, and visiting friends
and family in other boroughs.
The deadline to submit the
RFP is April 8 at 4 p.m. The full
RFP may be viewed at http://
www.nycedc.com/opportunity/planning-design-and-engineering-services-rockaway-ferry-landings-rfp.

Blocks of the Rock: Dayton West

By Dylan Watton

Before you say anything, yes,

we knowDayton Towers West
is not technically a block. But
what makes a block anyway?
Is it the arbitrary construct of
numbers and street names over
a specified length of concrete?
Is there some prerequisite that
states a block has to have orderly numbered houses and
apartment complexes going
from 500100, north-to-south?
Or is a block simply the people
who populate a small area, the
buildings they live in, and the
character both bring to their
surroundings? By using this
latter definition, Dayton West
more than qualifies as a block.
Dayton Towers is a cooperative apartment complex which
consists of two sections, East
and West. Dayton East consists
of the buildings 7400, 7600,
7800, and 8000, while Dayton West is just three buildings102-00, 103-00, and 10500. While Dayton East is laid
out with four buildings adjacent to each other, much like
the Surfside buildings and the
separate co-op Dayton Beach
Park, Dayton Wests structures
form a U-shape with 103-00 in
the middle. Both Dayton West
and East are located on Shore
Front Parkway, just steps away
from the new boardwalk and
consequently the beach.
As a co-op, residents of Dayton own shares within the
organization and pay maintenance and security fees in
addition to rent in order to live
in the buildings. For decades
Dayton Towers has been one of
the most sought after properties in Rockawaythe waiting
list for even a studio apartment
is several years long. Families in Dayton often last generations and apartments are
passed down from parents to
children.
Brenda Schilling is a prime
example of how Dayton runs in
the family. I have been a lifelong resident (47 years) of Dayton Towers West. I was born
there and now live there with
my husband and two sons, she
said. Schilling said that location has played a key role in her
decision to remain at Dayton

for so many years. We literally

live across the street from the
ocean. The only thing that separates us are the narrow streets
of Shore Front Parkway. From
our terraces, we have seen
dolphins jumping and whales
spouting water. If you face the
bayside, you can see New York
City which looks so close but is
far away. Our location is key for
travelling as we have two bus
stops directly outside our complex and the A-train stop across
the street.
Another lifelong resident is
Katy Grey. She said that living in Dayton has led to decades-long friendships and
bonds that remained unbroken. Im still good friends
with all of the people I grew
up, that explains itself, Grey
said. I have about 10-to-15
very, very close friends that I
literally grew up with. Theyve
been in my wedding party and
Ive been in their wedding party. Their parents are like second parents to me. Schilling
agreed, saying The people of
Dayton West function as an
extended family. We help each
other whether it be taking in

packages or holding elevator

doors. It is not uncommon to
see neighbors talking in the
lobby before going their separate ways.
Rick Feuerstein has lived in
Dayton West since 1980 and
currently serves as the Vice
President of the co-ops Board
of Directors. He echoed Greys
and Schillings statements
about how the complex creates family and security. Your
neighbors are wonderful here,
he said. The safety, the upkeep, its just a nice place to live
and raise a family. If you dont
want to go to the pool you can
always go to the beach. And
Rockaway has always been the
place to liveIve been here all
my life.
As the rest of Rockaway
mourns the end of summer on
Labor Day weekend with their
swan song trips to sea and
sand, Dayton West celebrates
with their version of Mardi
Gras. Schilling said it has been
a tradition for over 40 years.
Theres so many people that
come here for that, Feuerstein
said. Theres a costume parade
for the kids. The pool becomes

capacity packed. Theres a lot

of cooking that goes on down
at the pools. Its a whole day of
activities for the kids, there are
swimming races where they
can win trophies. Grey fondly recalled Mardi Gras and the
spirit of the races, which extended beyond that weekend.
We used to play manhunt
every summer and have relay
races at the pool. Wed always
go right across the street to the
parks at Shore Front and play
basketball. All the Dayton kids
are super competitive because
we grew up playing against
each other. It helps us with our
competitive spirit.
The storm caused much
damage to the complex. After
Hurricane Sandy we had four
blocks of boardwalk in between
the U of the Dayton buildings, Grey recalled. That was
a horror, everything that I always looked at outside my window was gone. Feurenstein,
who has been on the board for
15 years, said that the storm allowed for the complex to make
some much-needed improvements. Were working on all
the concrete now to replace the
cracks weve had since Sandy.
The complex will be all-gated soon, so it will be less accessible to non-shareholders,
so to speak. New fencing has
recently gone up around the
buildings and Feuerstein said
further improvements are soon
to come.
Schilling said the complex
has increased its scope of late.
When I was growing up, the
complex seemed to focus more
on adults. Our co-op has become more family friendly
through the years. Our Board
of Directors has Halloween
parties and movie nights for
the children who live here.
Grey said that it has been revelatory to see the crop of new
businesses, from hair salons
to gyms to restaurants, which
have opened up across and
around Dayton West.
Perhaps Feuerstein summed
it up best. Compare the rents
anywhere else and theres no
place like it. People always call
Dayton the Jewel of Rockaway.
I call Dayton the Jewel of New
York City.

Ask the
DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

Blood Pressure
Treatments
In my last column I discussed
hypertension (HTN) and its
causes. Today I would like
to cover the definitions and
treatments of HTN. First of
all, normal blood pressure
is 120/80. But that does not
mean that everyones pressure
should be 120/80. Blood pressure standards and guidelines
are recommended by the Joint
National Committee, made up
of experts from the American
Heart Association, American
College of Cardiology and the
American Society of Hypertension. Their recommendations often change. Currently the recommendations are
as follows: healthy persons
should be below 150/90 and
those with heart disease below
140/90 (below 150/90 for those
with heart disease who are
more than 80 years old). There
is scant evidence that forcing
blood pressure to levels lower
than 140/90 in those with heart
disease provides any additional benefit. Also, as we age our
arteries become stiffer and
older people may develop Isolated Systolic Hypertension,
or ISH. Those with ISH have a
high systolic pressure, usually above 150, with a normal of
even low diastolic pressure below 80.
If your pressure is high, most
practitioners will recommend
lifestyle changes first before
resorting to medication, unless your pressure is alarmingly high. Lifestyle changes
include weight loss if you are
overweight, quitting smoking,
eating a healthier diet with less
salt (throw away the salt shaker
on the table), moderating alcohol intake and doing regular
exercise. Many people who are
successful at changing their

lifestyle to a heathier one may

avoid needing medication for
years.
The treatment of HTN with
medication has come full circle
in the last 30 or so years. Back
then, the recommendation
was to start treatment with a
diuretic, or water pill. Over the
ensuing years initial treatment
recommendations changed but
have now come back to the use
of a diuretic as first line treatment for most people. Your
doctor will titrate, or adjust,
your medications based on
your blood pressure response.
Other medications may be added like ACE inhibitors (Ramipril), ARBs (losartan), calcium
channel blockers (amlodipine,
Cardizem), beta blockers (atenolol) and many others.
Of course medications can
have side effects so its important to fully discuss any symptoms you might be having with
your doctor. Some medications
may be inappropriate for some
people with other diseases (i.e.
beta blockers in those with
asthma or emphysema) and
some medications may interact
with others. That is why prescribing medication is a joint
effort between your doctor, you
and your pharmacist. Also if
you have been on blood pressure medication it can be very
dangerous to suddenly stop
taking them. Your blood pressure can rebound to very high
levels causing a heart attack or
stroke.
So see your doctor for regular
checkups. HTN can be treated

HTN can be fatal.

Rockaway Polar Plunge Raises $37,000 !

Event Dedicated to Emily Hutton
Hundreds of people gathered at Riis Park on Saturday,
March 12 for the Second Annual Rockaway Polar Plunge. This
fun, amazing event supports
the Special Olympics an organization near and dear to so
many in Rockaway. This years
event raised $37,000 and was
in honor of the late Emily Hutton who died at the age of 21 of
cardiac arrest. She was a much
loved member of the community and had many friends at
the St. Camillus-Rockaway
Special Olympics and the Bungalow Bar where she worked.
Sean Tubridy reflected on
the day. The Special Olympics

has played an important role

in my life. That is the reason
I can get right behind it and
raise as much as possible to
ensure the program continues.
The St. Camillus Special Olympics, run by Joe Featherstone,
has done great things for a lot
of athletes, the fact is that not
all programs run as efficiently,
and the Polar Plunge sees that
athletes in all programs get
funding they desperately need
to stay afloat.
Good Company Hospitality
and Bungalow Bar were sponsors and have raised more than
$6000 each year for the event.

thing that makes us feel joy.
He explains that when the
heart fills up with joy because of
something we have gotten, rather than overflowing and initiating thanksgiving in his words,
advertisement comes in telling us there is a bigger or newer
model or something we should
get. So rather than feeling alive
with this new something in our
lives overflowing like water in
a fountain that is too full, the
vessel becomes bigger. It never overflows. And we are never
satisfied.
Taking this notion to the experiential side of our lives, what
does it take to feel joy in the
heart? What do we need to experience to feel real joy?
A friend of mine, who has
everything, needs nothing,
can do whatever she wants
pretty much, spent the winter in FL in a very small place
one room - , because that is
what became available. She
planned to have experiences she normally wouldnt
have and was so happy. She
played tennis. She danced.
She went to yoga classes. She

had dinners with unexpected

visitors. She was open. She said
it was freeing. And that is inspiring. Granted, she knew she
was coming back to her stuff ,
but being joyful in the simple
experiences is the lesson. It is
fulfilling to spend money that
we have on having experiences,
rather than having new, better
(i.e., more expensive) stuff .
A local lunch with a couple of
friends. A weekend in an historical town. A wine-tasting dinner with friends. An afternoon
in a natural preserve. A day at a
museum. A bike ride to a community fair. A chat at the local
coffee shop. A yoga class. A trip
with family. You name it.
Being present in and open
to experiences fulfills us in
a way that nears what Brother Steindl-Rast talks about.
When the water is filling the
fountain, i.e., the time we are
experiencing something, allow it to overflow in its simplicity, and feel the joy of the
experience.
May your experiences illuminate your heart, enlighten your
mind and nourish your soul.

The great thing about PVC beach

carts is they are lightweight and durable. PVC can also be used to make
carts for small water crafts (jet skis,
canoes, etc.), carts for trash cans
and even carts for gardening.
By making your own beach length, width and depth to suit
cart, you get to decide on the your needs. They are very easy
to make and plans are easily
found online, or you can email
me for detailed instructions.
Here are a few tips that are not
found in most instructions:
1- After cutting your PVC pipe,
use sand cloth to smoothen out
the edges.
2- To make your PVC glue hold
better always clean all pipe ends
and fittings with PVC cleaner
before gluing.
3- When buying wheels for
your beach cart, you want to get
0DUFK
wheels that are at least 10 inches
tall and three inches wide. Wider is better for rolling through

the sand, taller is better to allow

more clearance to the ground
and for going over blunt edges
(like curbs).
4- Always build your cart a little bigger than you think youll
need to allow for those few
things you forgot to plan on.
5- If you decide to paint your
cart, only do so after your cart is
fully assembled (PVC glue will
not work through paint).
6- If youre building a cart with
two wheels, put your wheels in the
center of the cart (you may need to
modify plans to do this). This will
distribute the weight evenly and
make it easier to pull in the sand.
Add these tips to any plans you
find online and youll have a cart
that will give you years of use.

and a cut sheet on how to make a
PVC beach cart by email, email

EXPERIENCES VS. THINGS

By Paulette Mancuso

Having experiences is more

fulfilling than having things.
It feels good to get a new pair
of shoes or a new dress or a new
set of golf clubs or a new watch.
It feels good to get a new car or
countless other things.
Those moments are really just
moments and if we put everything
we have in one big room we could
stare at it and think it is just a big
pile of stuff . If we have a house
and a car or two we could look at
them from afar and think, nice,
inanimate stuff .

Page 43

That is all good and has a place

in our lives. If we can, it is great
to obtain beautiful things. But,
the importance we sometimes
place on things can get in the
way of a happy life.
A few weeks ago, Helen my
co-writer for this column,
shared an app called On Being and particularly pointed
me to an interview on Gratitude with Brother David Steindl-Rast, a 90-year old delightful
Benedictine monk. What rang
true to me was his description of
feeling joy in moments of gratitude, i.e., when we have some-

Shaking The Family Tree

Finding Ones Roots
By Patrick Morgan

Recently, there has been

increased interest and curiosity in finding out about
ones family history, especially among Baby Boomers.
This interest has been fueled by the popular PBS series
Finding Your Roots, which
just finished its third successful season. The show is
hosted by Harvard Professor Dr. Henry Louis Gates
Jr. In each episode, celebrities view their ancestral histories, sometimes learning
of connections to famous
or infamous people. They
sometime discover long lost
secrets and due to these discoveries, occasionally share
their emotional experience
with the viewers. Besides
following the paper trail,
Dr. Gates also analyzes his
guests DNA and experts
trace their bloodlines and
occasionally debunk longheld beliefs (dont worry,
the DNA part doesnt get too
scientific). If you missed it,
Season 3 can be viewed at
the PBS website: pbs.org/
weta/finding-your-roots/
NBC also aired a series
called Who Do You Think
You Are? which ran from
2010-2012. TLC picked up the
series in 2013 and finished
the 7th season last year. Season 8 is due to premier on
April 3rd. This series is similar to Finding Your Roots,
but includes some travel
with the celebrity back to her
or his ancestral homeland.
Highlight clips can be found
at
tlc.com/tv-shows/whodo-you-think-you-are/
So if you are interested in
pursuing this further, where
do you start and how much is
this going to cost you in time
and money?
Well, that all depends.
The best place to start is
Ancestry.com. It is the largest
for-profit genealogy company in the world and operates
a network of genealogical and
historical record websites fo-

cused on the United States

and nine foreign countries.
Ancestry also develops and
markets its own genealogical software, and offers a
wide array of genealogical
related services. As of June
2014, the company provided access to approximately
16 billion historical records
and over 2 million paying
subscribers. User-generated content tallies to more
than 70 million family trees
and subscribers have added more than 200 million
photographs, scanned documents and written stories.
With all of this information
available, youre bound to
find something that you
never knew about your family.
I have to admit that I am an
aspiring junior genealogist.
Being the son of an Irish immigrant, I always wanted to
know more about my family
history. I had some downtime in 2011-2012, so I had
the unique opportunity to
dive into my family history.
The first thing I did was join
ancestry.com.
WARNING: Family Tree research takes up a lot of your
time and is not free. Its a labor of love, so if you are not
serious about taking this
journey, dont waste your
time and money. This can be
a dry topic, so Ill try to make
it as entertaining as possible.

Part 1 - Getting
started
Before you join Ancestry,
I suggest that you start with
these two things:
1. Go old school and start
mapping out your own family tree with a pen and paper. Start with yourself. Record your important dates
for life events, such as birth,
baptism
(if
applicable),
marriage, etc. If you have a
spouse and children, record
their information as well.
Talk to your brothers and
sisters, aunts, uncles and

cousins and widen the scope

of your family information
(You may find that a relative
had already started this process).
2. Talk to the elders in your
family. Try to go back as far
as you can in your family history by talking to them. Get
names and dates as well as
family stories. Even though
a family story or tale may
sound far-fetched, it is most
likely based in fact and your
research may eventually uncover the basis for it. Add that
information to your written
research.
3. Once you have all of your
written information organized, go to ancestry.com and
join the service. Right now,
they are running a 14-day
free trial.
There are three levels of service that you can subscribe to:
U.S. Discovery this level
provides you access to all
U.S. records on Ancestry.
A monthly subscription is
$19.99 (after the free trial) and $99 for a 6 month
subscription. If your family has been in the United States since the early
1800s I would recommend
this option. You can explore their U.S. record collections which includes
birth, marriage, death and
census records detailing
occupations, ages, siblings, birthplaces, and addresses.
World Explorer provides
you access to all U.S. &
International records on
Ancestry. A monthly subscription is $34.99 (after
the free trial) and $149 for
a 6 month subscription.
You will have unlimited
access to more than 2 billion international birth,
marriage, death, census,
military, church and other records. You can locate
your immigrant ancestors
and learn more about their
homeland by accessing
documents like detailed
passenger lists. They have

records from more than 60

countries.
I found a copy of the actual ships register for my fathers voyage from Ireland
to New York on the Cunard
ship Georgic in 1952. I also
found my maternal grandfather on the 1930 US Census,
which is right after he emigrated from Ireland. You can
download these documents
to your own computer and
incorporate them into the
profile of the family member in your tree. Records like
these are great to share with
your relatives because no
one has seen them before.
All Access This option
provides you full membership to Ancestry as
well as Newspapers.com
(Basic), Fold3.com (military records), and Ancestry Academy (Self-paced
courses from the experts).
A monthly subscription is
$44.99 (after the free trial)
and $199 for a six-month
subscription. I would only
recommend this option if
a) you really want to dive
into this and b) your family
has been in the US a long
time and you expect to see
their names mentioned in
newspaper articles as well
as military records. Ancestry Academy is beneficial
because it provides you a
lot of instruction and tips
to build your family tree.
The Academy offers exclusive, high-quality video
courses taught by genealogy and family history experts. These courses cover
a wide range of relevant
family history topics and
offer something for genealogists of all levels.
If you decide that this path
isnt for you, buying a subscription is a great idea for a
family member or friend interested in this topic.
For more details or to sign
up for the service, you can visit their website: http://www.
