General Purpose: To persuade
Specific Purpose: To persuade the audience that hybrid cars are bad for the environment and
your pocketbook.

Thesis or Central Idea (Sentence): You should not buy hybrid cars because they are bad for the
environment, and will not save you money on gas.

Introduction
A. Motivation (Sentence): Car manufacturers have been lying about hybrids for years.
B. Orientation (Sentence): The American people have been lied to about how cost
effective and environmentally sound hybrid cars are.
C. Credibility (Sentence): After extensive research into this issue, I have compiled, and
will be presenting, proof of these lies.
D. Transition (Sentence): My first topic today will go over the myth surrounding the
alleged reduction in CO2 emissions these cars produce, with my second and final
topic discussing the parameters by which these cars are supposed to save you
money.

Body
A. Main Point/Argument (Sentence): Hybrid cars do not help save the environment by
reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
1. First Support/Evidence (Sentence): Creating hybrid cars produces more
greenhouse gas emissions than in the production of traditional ICE vehicles.

2. Second Support/Evidence (Sentence): The Greenhouse gas emission produced


during construction of hybrids outweighs the reduced emissions from their use.
3. Third Support/Evidence (Sentence): Producing batteries for hybrids destroys the
environment and creates more greenhouse gas.
4. Fourth Support/Evidence (Sentence): The energy required to charge hybrid
batteries often produce immense amounts of greenhouse gases.

B. Main Point/Argument (Sentence): Hybrid cars are not going to save you money on
gas.
1. First Support/Evidence (Sentence): Studies show that you will need to drive
about 250,000 miles before making your money back on the initial increased price of the car.
2. Second Support/Evidence (Sentence): Those studies were done with a gas price
of $2.80, meaning that with todays prices it would be even harder to earn your money back.
3. Third Support/Evidence (Sentence): Driving your car on a daily basis would most
likely take you a couple of decades before you break even on your purchase.

A. Summary (Sentence): I have provided sound evidence that these saviors of the
environment are just as detrimental if not more so to the environment that traditional
ICE vehicles, and are also not going to save you money on gas.

B. Request for Action (Sentence): Having heard this, it would not only be unethical
environmentally to buy a hybrid car, but also not a sound investment of your money.

C. Final Motivation (Sentence): Given the information I have set before you, I hope that
you can come to a similar conclusion as to the one Ive come too. Dont buy a
Hybrid.
