EXECUTIVE SUMMARY OF PROJECT PROPOSAL (maximum 300

words)
This proposal is to propose a shopping bag as a solution to plastic
bag free in Malacca. The intention of the campaign by Melaka state
government is to raise awareness about the pollution caused by plastic
bags and polystyrene in line with Malacca towards Green City by 2020.
Consumers have to bring their own recycle bag when doing groceries but
they tend to forget it. The solution to this problem is by creating a shopping
bag which is sustainable, easy to carry, multi-chamber, suit to supermarket
cart, washable and durable. Public health and safety, cultural, societal and
sustainability are taken into considerations. In order to produce this
shopping bag, the functions, design requirements and evaluation criteria
are identified. After few different ideas and sketching of the bag have been
produced, screening and scoring methods are applied for all the designs
and the best design will be chosen. A detailed drawing of the final design
will be created using CAD software. The next step is material selection
where the most suitable material for the prototype will be chosen based on
few criteria. The prototype fabrication starts right after all the materials
needed are obtained. The final stage is to test the bag based on the
objectives of project. Thus, all procedures and results obtained will be
presented in report writing. There are two methods used for this project
which are primary and secondary data collection method. The primary
method will be done by conducted a survey and the secondary data will be
obtained by doing library research.
DETAIL PLANNING

Project Background
1) Problem Statement:
State Education, Higher Education, Science and Technology, Green
Technology and Innovation chairman Datuk Md Yunos Husin said the ruling
would be imposed in all shopping malls and supermarkets. It is an initiative
by the state government to reduce wastage and in line with Malaccas
status as a green technology state. Since our landfills and drains are filled
with paper bags, it doesnt serve Malaccas ambitious plan to be a fully
green state. From Jan 1 2016, consumers have to bring along their own
shopping bags or the cash counters will supply them with biodegradable
bags made of plant-based materials. Unfortunately, consumers sometimes

forgot to bring their recycle bag when doing their groceries as it is not
attractive. Besides, it is because the most existing shopping bags have not
enough space for their groceries. Sometimes, they feel inconvenience to
bring and hold the bag along the way. Furthermore, the low durability of
existing shopping bag make it easily broken as it could not withstand heavy
items and groceries. Thus, the idea is to develop a bag which is
sustainable, easy to carry (flat pack), multi-chamber, suit to supermarket
cart, washable and durable.
2)

Related works:

1. Trolley Bag
The system of four different sized bags are connected together with Velcro
along integrated rails, and can be easily racked open and upright in the
shopping trolley for maximum convenience during your supermarket shop.
Gone are the days of ripped carrier bags, and trying to frantically pack
shopping with one hand whilst keeping flimsy reusable bags open with the
other, Trolley bags allow you to pack and sort your groceries with 2 hands
as they are scanned through the checkout, halving the time it takes at the
supermarket till. If youre a shopper who now chooses the quicker scan as
you shop method in our supermarkets, Trolley Bags can be racked into the
trolley as you enter the store, and will remain open and upright for the
duration allowing you to pack your shopping into the appropriate bags as
you scan your items throughout the store. No more mixing your vegetables
with washing up liquid, as the neat colour coded system creates a filing
cabinet like system within the trolley for your shopping.

2. Grab Bag
The Grab Bag is a strong fabric tote that clips into your shopping cart at the
store. It holds seven times the items of one plastic bag. After checkout,
simply seal it up and use the easy-lift handle to get it into the car and the
house. Due to the Grab Bags design and special handles, you can carry
much more weight than with other bags. The Grab Bag also holds your
items securely in place in your car. And its perfect for warehouse clubs
that do not supply bags.

3. ADK Packworks
One of the oldest surviving traditions inside the Adirondack Park in upstate
New York, these baskets were used to carry the heavy loads needed for
hunting, fishing, trapping, and other pursuits in the mountain wilderness.
Most early Adirondack pack baskets were made using hand pounded black
ash wood splints split to satin, with a flat or slightly curved back and a
"belly" that bowed out somewhat to increase the volume of the contents
the pack could hold. The structure and flat bottom of the pack were
ingenious and resourceful, as the design allowed for increased stability of
the pack basket, independent of the load. Since the 1800s, the packs have
evolved in terms of their recreational use and continue to be an important
part of the Adirondacks history. Today, our innovative new design of the
Adirondack pack basket includes an internal frame making it is easy to
ship, transport, and store your items and can be used for a variety of
occasions, including taking gear to the beach, packing a picnic, working in
the garden, going on a hike, carrying everyday gear to school or the office,
and transporting groceries.

Methodology
Description of methodology

This section shows the flowchart of the project activities, project activities,
Gantt chart and expected outcomes of product development which entitled

shopping bag as a solution to plastic bag free in Malacca. The foundation of

the survey of the project is being shaped by the theoretical statement of
the research and this part of the dissertation helps in providing these
statements. Further, the research methodology section of the report
provides a concise understanding about various strategies, tools and
techniques that will be applied by the researcher for the purpose of
carrying out the current research (Gill and Johnson, 2002). Here, in this
current research report, both qualitative and quantitative research will be
adopted by the researcher. Based on the objectives which are to reduce
pollution caused by plastic bags in line with Melaka towards Green
Technology City by 2020, to create a sustainable and reusable shopping
bag as a solution to plastic free campaign and to ease consumers in
bringing and packing their groceries during their shopping, there are some
techniques to solve it. We solve it by modifying and innovates the current
product. Further, both primary and secondary research methods will be
used in the study. Primary research will be conducted by undertaking a
survey. On contrary to this, secondary research will be carried out by
exploring various journals, articles and books of renowned authors and
internet.
Data Collection Method
Generally, there are two types of data, which can be collected by the
researcher for the purpose of undertaking a successful research. These
data are primary and secondary. Primary data is being regarded as one of
the most important data, as seeking help from this data more reliable and
accurate information can be gathered. Such type of data is accumulated for
the first time by the researcher. On the other hand, secondary data is
defined as that data, which are already present and used by many other
researchers as a basis of their research study. In other words, such type of
data is gathered earlier for some other research purposes. In this present
research study, the researcher has made use of both primary and
secondary source of data collection methods. The primary data will be
gathered by carrying out the survey. A survey will further be performed by
getting questionnaires filled by the customers.
A set of questionnaire containing 10 questions were distributed. Both open
and close ended questions will be used in order to explore their perception
about the use of biodegradable bags in all shopping malls and
supermarkets to reduce wastage. On contrary to this, secondary data will
be accumulated by investigating various books, articles and journals
related to sustainability and green technology and its impacts in the global
market. Further, various online and internet means will also be explored by

the researcher by taking into consideration the topic of the research study.
Analysis Procedure
To investigate the study, 50 persons of the local people in Malacca were
chosen as the respondents. Data for the researched were collected through
questionnaire. The respondents of the study were 50 persons of the local
people in Malacca and they were chosen at random. Gender or age of the
respondents is not an issue to this research. The data collection period
started with one distribution of the questionnaire to the respondent. The
questionnaires were distributed around the local people in Malacca and the
respondents returned the questionnaires as soon as they finished
answering the questions. The researchers are able to analyze the data if all
questionnaires were collected.
Limitations
Limitation of time is the major challenge being faced by the researcher.
Because of the shortage of time, it was very difficult for the researcher to
unfold more detailed aspects of the topic under study. Further, the
resources were also very limited, due to which proper research was not
carried out (Goddard and Melville, 2004). In this present research study,
secondary source of data collection will be used by the researcher and
thus, there are more likely chances that the viewpoint of various authors
can be prejudiced. Information collected from diverse sources might not
relate with main aspects of research. Lastly, it was also difficult for the
researcher to explore detailed aspects of cultural, societal, environmental
and sustainability in order to develop a bag which is sustainable, easy to
carry and etc.
