Introduction
This document provides installation information for release 5.1 of COOL:Biz and COOL:Xtras
Webview. These release notes provide guidelines for setting up a PC in client or server mode,
along with pre-installation rules.
This document also contains the following information:
Migration Procedures for .KM files
Minimum System Requirements for running COOL:Biz 5.1 and COOL:Xtras Webview 5.1

Pre-install Procedure for Windows 95
Rules for setting up COOL:Biz 5.1 and COOL:Xtras Webview 5.1 your environment
Before you begin installation of this product, review the following guidelines:
Contact customer support or check the support web site
http://www.cool2.sterling.com/support/ptfindex/cool.htm for any product updates.
COOL:Biz can operate in standalone mode or in a client/server mode. Up to 10 users
can access one or more files located on the server when using the recommended server
configuration.
For information about technical restrictions, refer to the Readme entry on the Start menu
after installation.
If you update one member of your team to COOL:Biz 5.1 or COOL:Xtras Webview, you
need to update all members of the team to the current release. Otherwise team
members still running 4.1 may potentially cause corruption in a 5.1 KM file.
In a client/server mode, clients are able to access both local and remote .KM files.
You cannot run two release levels of COOL products on the same machine, for example
COOL:Biz 5.1 and COOL:Biz 4.1.
If you have any questions during the installation process, contact Sterling Software Customer
Support at (800) 246-5151, or (972) 801-7900, or via the e-mail address
coolhotline@sterling.com. If you want to order additional products, call (972) 801-6300.

KM File Migration
This section contains procedures required to migrate KM files created in prior releases of
COOL:Biz. If you are a new user of the COOL products and not upgrading from a prior release,
this section does not pertain to you.
The migration process makes it possible to use .KM files created in prior releases with the current
release of COOL:Biz. If you are upgrading from a release of COOL prior to COOL:Biz 3., you will
need to complete the copy and export procedures listed here prior to installing COOL:Biz. If you
are upgrading from COOL:Biz 3.2, you only need to complete the copying section prior to
installation, however you can also do the export at this time if you wish. The installed COOL:Biz
5.1 will have a facility to export 3.2 and above level files for migration purposes.
The 5.1 Release of COOL:Biz will read 5.0 KM files but a migration is required if multiple users
will use the KM file at one point. To do so, export the KM to BML and then re-import into a new
KM file using the Model Manager Data Transfer menu (see Migrating .KM Files section below).
The recommended method for archiving files is to export BML files from .KM files. This export
process creates .BML and .BMG files. Both files are necessary to restore the .KM file. The .BMG
file contains the graphics and other objects that are embedded in diagrams.
Before you begin these procedures, review the following rules that apply to the migration process:
Make a backup copy of the KM file using Model Manager before you begin the migration
process
Do not use the recruitment feature for migration purposes, use the full KM file
Make sure that you create a different name for the new KM file or you will overwrite the
existing KM file.

Copying .KM Files

When copying .KM files, you need to use the Copy option on the File menu in COOL:Biz. This
assures a complete and correct copy of the database contents. Other backup methods may
create undetectable corruption that cannot be repaired in your .KM files. Use this procedure to
make a copy of a .KM file before you begin the migration procedure.
Rules
Do not use DOS or Windows Explorer to make copies of KM files.
Always use the Copy option on the File menu in COOL:Biz.
1.

Access Model Manager by doing one of the following:

From the Windows Start, point to Programs and then to COOL:Biz. Click, Model Manager.
OR
If you are running COOL:Biz, on the Tools menu, click Model Manager.

2.

Open the .KM file that you want to copy by doing one of the following:
On the File menu, click Open. The Open .KM File dialog box appears.
Type or select the name of the file in the File name box.
Click Open.
OR
In tree-control, select the file and then double-click.

COOL:Biz 5.1 and COOL:Xtras Webview 5.1 Release Notes

3.

On the File menu, click Copy. The Copy .KM File dialog box appears.

4.

In the Save-in and File name box, select or type the drive, folder, and file name of the
backup file.

5.

Click Save.
After you complete this procedure for each .KM file that you want to use in the current
release, then complete the Migrating .KM Files procedure.

Migrating .KM Files

KM Files created with COOL:Biz 3.2 and COOL:Biz 4.x are not compatible with .KM files in the
current release. If you try to open a file created with a previous release, a message appears
stating that you need to migrate the file. Although you can import subordinate KM files that were
created in COOL:Biz 4.1, you should reconcile them into a 4.1 master KM and then migrate the
master KM file.
If you are upgrading from KEY:Model 2.1, KEY:Model 2.5, or COOL:Biz 3.0, you need to export
all of your .KM files to BML, in the current release, before you begin the install of COOL:Biz 5.1.
After installation, you can import the .BML and .BMG files into a new .KM file. Use the following
table to determine how you will export and import KM files from previous releases.
Rules
Before you export a KM file to BML format, you need to close it in all applications, such as
Webview.
When importing KM files created in a release prior to version 3.2, you will use the Import
version 3.2 BML file command on the COOL:Biz 5.1 Start menu.
You can now migrate subordinate KM files created in release 4.1, however you will lose the
journal information.

Customers Using COOL:Biz and COOL:Spex together

With the releases of COOL:Biz 5.1 and COOL:Spex 3.0, model objects created by these tools will
no longer reside in the same file. COOL:Biz will continue to store its files in the KM file,
COOL:Spex models will be stored in a file as described in the COOL:Spex documentation.
Therefore, customers who have used these tools together (either COOL:Biz 4.0 and COOL:Spex
2.0 or COOL:Biz 3.2 and COOL:Spex 1.0) will need to make separate copies of these files to
upgrade to the new versions of each tool. The model migration feature for COOL:Biz 5.1 will not
import COOL:Spex objects such as Type Collaborations, Component Specifications or
Specification Packages. Common objects such as Types, Classes, Packages, Use Cases, and
Information Types will be migrated. Please reference the COOL:Spex 3.0 documentation for
additional information about migrating COOL:Spex 1.0 and 2.0 objects to the new version.

Exporting .KM Files from Previous Releases

Do not try to open and migrate a .KM file using drive A on your machine. The migration process
requires approximately 1 MB for a temporary file. Use this procedure only for files created in
release 3.2 or later.
1.

On the COOL:Biz Start menu do one of the following:

If the file is version 3.2 or earlier, click Export Version 3.2 KM File to BML
If the KM file is version 4.0 or 4.1, click Export Version 4.x KM file to BML.
The COOL Product Suite BML Generator window appears.

2.

On the File menu, click Open. The Open Model File dialog box appears.

3.

Type or select the path and file name of the .KM file you want to migrate.

4.

Click Open.

5.

On the Data Transfer menu, click Export to BML. The Select Export File dialog box
appears.

6.

Type or select the name of the export file in the file name box. This file is now ready for
use and can be imported.

After you complete this procedure for each KM file that you want to use in release 5.1, you are
ready to perform the Importing a BML procedure.

COOL:Biz 5.1 and COOL:Xtras Webview 5.1 Release Notes

Migration Issues
You may encounter some of the following migration parse errors on BML files generated from
releases prior to COOL:Biz.
Name Strings Greater than 256 Characters. If you encounter a parse error on a line that has a
very long name, open the BML in a text editor, go to the line indicated, and truncate the name to
256 characters or break it up by inserting two double quotes () after each 256 character interval.
Text Annotations. Remove text=; if you encounter a parse error on a line containing it.
Null Polyline. Remove polyline=[ ]; if you encounter a parse error on a line containing it.
Backslash. If you encounter a parse error on a line containing a string that ends in a backslash
(\), either add a second backslash if you want the name to end in a backslash, or remove the
backslash.
When you migrate a KM file created in whole or in part using COOL:Spex 1.0 or 2.0 to COOL:Biz
5.1, the following diagrammers and objects will not migrate:
Diagrams - State Transition, Sequence, and Component, Component Architecture, Type
Collaboration, Type Interaction, Type Relationship,
Objects - State Machine, Collaboration, States, Transitions, and Messages

Software Requirements for Setup

This section contains a list of requirements that your machine needs to meet before you can
setup the current release of COOL:Biz. These rules include guidelines for the installation of
service packs, performing an upgrade, use of ObjectStore, installing from a network, and
installation on the Windows 95 and Windows NT operating system.

Requirements for a Client PC Setup

Review the following pre-installation rules before you proceed with the setup of release 5.1 for a
client or stand alone PC. It is very important that your machine meet all of the following
requirements before you setup the current release.
For upgrades - Make a note of the installation path of the current product. You need
to install the new release in the same path. The default location for the product is
C:\COOL. The only exception is COOL:Xtras Webview. Refer to the COOL:Xtras
Webview section on page 32 for more information.
Custom Reports - Before you install and use this reporting capability you need to
install the following files, which you can download from Microsofts Web site.
For a Windows 95/98 operating system, install Microsoft Office 97 Service Pack 1 and
DCOM95.EXE
For an NT 4.0 operating system, install the NT Service Pack 3
Object Store - Only one version of ObjectStore should be installed on a PC with
COOL:Biz. ObjectStore 5.1 or later is needed to run the current release. If you need
to run an older version of ObjectStore (i.e. 5.0) with an application other than
COOL:Biz on the same PC, contact an ODI representative.
Windows 95/98 PC - Before you install COOL from the network, you need to map a
drive on the desktop to the installation source. Use the procedure Mapping a
Network Drive for a Windows 95/98 Installation on page 10.
Advisor - If you plan to use Advisor you need to install Internet Explorer 3.2 or later
Windows NT - You need administrator privileges to install the COOL:Biz or
COOL:Xtras Webview on an NT client PC. If do not have administrative privileges,
see your system administrator about setting your privileges to the proper level.

Requirements for setting up a Server-Only PC

If you purchased an Objectstore Server for Windows NT license, you can install a server-only PC
that does not contain the COOL:Biz application. Refer to the steps below for the Objectstore
Server for Windows NT Installation. If you purchased server licenses for platforms other than
Windows NT (i.e. OS/2, SUN SOLARIS, HP-UX), refer to the accompanying ObjectStore
installation information.
A CD-ROM is provided for the installation of COOL:Biz and COOL:Xtras Webview. If you want to
install from a network, refer to the Installing from a Network Drive procedure on page 10.

COOL:Biz 5.1 and COOL:Xtras Webview 5.1 Release Notes

Review the following pre-installation rules before you proceed with the setup for a server only PC.
These rules include guidelines for the installation of service packs, performing an upgrade, use of
ObjectStore, installing from a network, and installation on the Windows NT operating system.
Your machine needs to meet the following requirements before you perform the procedure for
setting up the current release.
Administrative Privileges - You need administrator privileges to install COOL:Biz or
COOL:Xtras Webview on an NT client PC.
Object Store - Only one version of ObjectStore should be installed on a PC with
COOL:Biz. ObjectStore 5.1 is needed to run COOL:Biz 5.1 or COOL:Xtras Webview
5.1. If you need to run an older version of ObjectStore (i.e. 5.0) with an application
other than COOL products on the same PC, contact an ODI representative.

Installing from a Network Drive

To install COOL:Biz from a network drive, copy the entire contents of the CD-ROM to the root of a
network drive.
Note: You cannot copy the CD-ROM to diskettes and then install from the diskettes. Some of
the files are too large to fit on a diskette.

Mapping a Network Drive for a Windows 95/98 Installation

Rule: If you are installing from a CD on another PC, network server, or from an image of the CD
on the network (described above); do not use the Network Neighborhood option in Windows
Explorer to access the installation source. The install will not work. Instead, complete the
following steps.
1.

Go to Explorer.

2.

On the Tools menu, click Network Drive.

3.

In the drive box, type or select the drive of the installation source.

4.

In the path box, type or select the path of the installation source.

5.

Click OK.

You are now ready to install from a network drive on your Windows 95/98 PC.

System DLLs
The install includes several system files that are required. When installing, the following rules are
used to determine when a system DLL should be installed:
Note: All questions previously asked by the installation program about whether to install a file
are removed.

If the file we are trying to install is the same as the file currently on the system, the file will
not be installed.
If the file we are trying to install has an earlier date than the file currently on the system,
the file will not be installed.
If the file we are trying to install has a later date than the file currently on the system, the
file will be installed.

Use this section to verify changes made to services, environment variables, and the autoexec.bat
file for client and server-only PCs. For a Windows NT operating system you will verify changes
made to services for ObjectStore and system environment variables. For a Window 95 operating
system you will verify changes made to the autoexec.bat file and environment variables.

Completing and Verifying the Client Information

After you complete the setup procedures and reboot the standalone PC, check the following
items to verify that the installation was successful.
Note: Refer to the README.TXT file for information on connectivity problems.

When running on Windows NT:

1.

Click Start, Point to Settings, and Click Control Panel.

2.

In Control Panel, double-click on the Services icon.

3.

Check to see that the ObjectStore Cache Manager R4.0 and ObjectStore Server R4.0 are
listed as Started and Automatic. If they are not, try shutting down and rebooting your PC.
If they are, close Services.

4.

In Control Panel, double-click the System icon. Select the Environment tab. Check to see
if the following entries appear in the System Variables list box:
OS_TMPDIR=C:\TEMP
OS_ROOTDIR=C:\ODI\OSTORE
Path = C:\ODI\OSTORE\BIN
OR
Make sure that the directory or the BIN directory under where you installed ObjectStore
is in the PATH statement.

5.

Verify that the directory pointed to by OS_TMPDIR exists and has Read and Write
privileges (if on a network drive).
If these items all check out correctly, your system is ready for use. Remember that all
clients accessing the same server should be configured the same as far as network
protocol (TCP/IP) and location of the remote schema is concerned.

When running on Windows 95:

1.

Open an MS-DOS window and issue the SET command. This will display the environment
variables. Ensure that OS_ROOTDIR=C:\ODI\OSTORE (or wherever you installed
ObjectStore) appears in the DOS window.

2.

If the OS_ROOTDIR variable is not correct, ObjectStore may not have installed correctly.

3.

Verify that CALL C:\OS_AUTO.BAT has been placed in your autoexec.bat file.

4.

Make sure that the C:\ODI\OSTORE\BIN directory (or the BIN directory under where you
installed ObjectStore) is listed in the PATH statement.

5.

Verify that the directory pointed to by OS_TMPDIR exists and has Read and Write
privileges (if on a network drive).

listed as Started and Automatic. If they are not, try shutting down and rebooting your PC.
If they are, close Services.

4.

In Control Panel, double-click the System icon. Check to see if the following entries
appear in the System Variables list box:
OS_ROOTDIR=C:\ODI\OSTORE (or wherever you installed ObjectStore)
OS_TMPDIR=C:\TEMP

28

5.

If the OS_ROOTDIR variable is not correct, ObjectStore may not have installed correctly.

6.

Make sure that the C:\ODI\OSTORE\BIN directory (or the BIN directory under where you
installed ObjectStore) is listed in the PATH statement.

7.

Verify that the directory pointed to by OS_TMPDIR exists and has Read and Write
privileges (if on a network drive).

8.

Verify that there is a directory under the COOL directory called SCHEMA that holds three
files: PHOENIX.ADB, PHOENIX.A41 and PHOENIX.AXX. If this directory or these files
are not present, they can be copied from a client machine with the current release installed.

9.

Using the COOL:Biz Setup Utility

The COOL:Biz Setup Utility allows you to specify various environmental settings that affect tool
usage. You indicate whether you want to access files using a remote schema or local schema
from a standalone PC. A network option is available for accessing remote files while using
COOL:Biz. Other settings allow you to enable Advisor, the online methodology accompanying
COOL:Biz, and MS Repository support.
If you want to access a file through a remote server PC, it is not necessary to use the remote
schema. You can leave the Local Schema radio button selected and COOL:Biz will use the
schema on your standalone machine as long as ObjectStore is running on the remote server.
You may only want to select the Remote Schema radio button for accessing remote files in order
to aid with memory management on your local machine. The Setup Utility is not provided when
you install a server-only PC.
The first time you run the Setup Utility after installing COOL:Biz, a message may appear that
states the drivers have been updated and the information should be saved. You may choose to
ignore this message, or select Save in the Setup Utility. The message appears because the
order of the drivers in the COOL.INI file have been changed. If you choose not to save, the use
of the drivers is not affected.
Use the following procedure to access the COOL:Biz Setup dialog box, review the default
settings, and customize the COOL settings for use in your business environment.
Rules
If you want to access the schema directory on a server PC you need to copy the
\COOL\SCHEMA\phoenix.adb file from the client PC to the \COOL\SCHEMA\ directory on the
server PC.

Installing and Configuring COOL:Xtras Webview

An Overview of COOL:Xtras Webview
COOL:Xtras Webview is a model browsing tool. It is unique in that it allows users to browse both
the graphical diagrams and object details of a model directly from the KM file across an intranet
using a standard Web browser. There is no need to repetitively generate HTML and graphic files
and post these to a web site. The Webview administrator publishes a model simply by pointing to
it using the Web Administrator tool. Additionally, the Webview administrator can assign to a given
model an e-mail address when the model is published. This allows reviewers browsing the model
to send feedback to the owner of the model, or their designee.
There are two basic elements to COOL:Xtras Webview the browser client and the Webview
server. Setup for each of these is covered in a separate section below. The client is primarily a
standard web browser pointing to the Webview site in the Internet/Intranet. There is one
additional file loaded onto the client to support a new Java technology not included in standard
browsers.
There are different configurations possible for the Webview server. We cover the most common
ones below. Dont worry about choosing the optimal one at first if you first choice doesnt work
out, you can change it later, and this change is transparent to the browser client.

COOL:Xtras Webview Server Configuration Options

There are three components to the Webview Server:
The Webview Internet Server This is a series of HTML pages, Java applets and image files,
along with the Webview gateway program KEYCHAIN.EXE. These are installed on the
Internet or Intranet server.
The Web Administrator program This is the tool used to publish the model files. These
files can be installed on the Internet/Intranet server, or on a separate machine. The
KEYCHAIN.EXE communicates with the Web Administrator program to determine which
model files can be accessed.
The ObjectStore database server. Like COOL:Biz, Webview uses ObjectStore to manage
access to the model information. This can be on the Internet/Intranet server, on the same
machine as the Web Administrator, or on a separate machine of its own.

Configuration #1: Everything loaded on the Internet server While this is the easiest to
install and configure, if Webview access becomes heavy, performance of the Internet server can
become degraded due to the processing required by the ObjectStore Server. Additionally, the
person administering Webview would need physical access to the Internet Server to publish or
retract models for browsing. For this configuration, you need to install both components of
Webview and ObjectStore on the Internet Server.

installations. A separate Windows NT PC acts as the Webview Server, minimizing performance
impact on the Internet Server. The Webview administrator can publish or remove models from the
Webview Server without needing to access the Internet Server. For this configuration, select to

Configuration #4: Webview Access to a Development Server This configuration supports

the access of KM files from a shared development server. While browsing models being actively
developed is not generally recommended (both for performance and control purposes), there are
times when publishing a work in progress is useful. This configuration can also support
Webview access to non-Objectstore Servers for Windows NT (such as OS/2 or UNIX). In this
configuration, installation is the same as in Configuration #2. The Web Administration program
selects a KM file from the remote server when publishing. Note, that in this configuration, the
Webview Server machine labeled here can also be a COOL client machine running COOL:Biz.

Using the Web Administrator

The Web Administrator tool is used in the Windows environment to start and stop a service
thread for a .KM file. You need to start a service thread in order to view the contents of a .KM file
with your web browser.
Also, Webview has two autostart features. One enables you to enter COOL:Xtras Webview as an
NT service by entering a command at the MS-DOS prompt. The other allows you to mark KM
files as auto start on the Webview Administrator dialog box.

The Web Administrator tool must be running in order to maintain the service thread. Once the
tool is closed, all threads are terminated and the .KM files are no longer available for viewing in
your browser.
The COOL:Biz tools files and/or the ObjectStore server must reside on the same machine as the
Web Administrator tool.

Starting A Service Thread

Use this procedure so that you can view a .KM file in your web browser.
1.

From the COOL:Biz start menu, Point to COOL:Xtras Webview and then Click Web

User Administration and Model Extensions

The Edit Users option in Model Manager allows the creator or owner of a KM file to assign access
privileges for the other users of the KM file. Model Manager also allows creators or owners of KM
files to extend the model by applying standard extended property types to the object classes in
the KM file. The user administration and model extension information is part of the configuration
of the KM file. Configuration information is only transferred from one KM file to another when the
KM file is copied using the Copy command on the File menu of the Model Manager or any of the
COOL tools. User administration information may not be transferred trough BML and therefore
the configuration cannot be corrupted or inadvertently updated by doing a BML Import or Merge
Files action.
How do you safely re-use user administration information and model extensions for your
department or project? The easiest way to re-use your user definitions in release 5.1 is to create
a new, empty KM file that will serve as the master administration KM file. Only the person(s)
designated as Owners of this KM file can update user and model extension information in the
master administration KM file. Use this master administration KM file to add any new users or
new model extensions for the project. Any other working KM file can assume the user definitions
and model extensions from the master administration KM file simply by making a copy of the
master and then merging the working KM file into the copy of the master using the copy of the
master as the target. Whenever you perform a merge of two KM files, the result KM will have the
same user definitions and model extensions as the target KM.

Q.) Im merging a KM file with model extensions into a KM file without model extension
definitions. What will happen to the extended properties on the objects where Ive defined them?
A.)
The BML export process will export any instances of extended property and value pairs
that it finds in your source KM file. The instances of property definitions will then be merged into
the target KM file. However, the model extensions of the target KM file are not altered by the
merge or import of BML. For example, if in the source KM file you had defined an extended
property on the Entity class called Candidate and on Entity Customer you had set the value of
this property to TRUE using the Custom tab on the details dialog of the entity, this property value
pair would exported to BML and would be applied in the target KM file when you merge the two
KM files. However, the model extension would not be updated through the merge process.
Model extensions should be made in a master administration KM file and should be managed by
the encyclopedia owner (see section User Administration and Model Extension Considerations
in the release notes).

New Features
This chapter lists the new features for release 5.1 of COOL:Biz and COOL:Xtras Webview.

General Enhancements
Model Undo/Redo
COOL:Biz 5.0 introduced the first phase of the Undo feature Diagram Undo, which
allows you to undo changes made to a diagrams appearance. COOL:Biz 5.1 completes
the undo feature by providing Model Undo. With this release, changes to the model can
be undone and then redone as well.

Improved response when adding new objects

With a large KM file that has no Package hierarchy, adding new objects resulted in
significant delays. In this release, there is a new algorithm for refreshing the tree that
greatly improves the response time.

Correct printing of diagram header and footer text

In this release, the header and footer text is printed on each page of multiple page
diagrams.

Migration utility for Cool:BusinessTeam

COOL:Biz has been enabled for migration from COOL:BusinessTeam. A utility is
available from customer support.

Model Manager
Able to import large encyclopedia files from COOL:Enterprise
A memory leak that caused the Import From Enterprise logic to exhaust virtual memory
has been fixed.

Manual binding of Tables to Entities

48

COOL:Biz 5.1 and COOL:Xtras Webview 5.1 Release Notes

New functionality has been added to allow binding of Tables to Entities. This is especially
useful for binding a data model imported from DDL or ODBC to an existing entity model.
With an existing entity model and an imported data model, selecting "Bind Tables to
Entities" will guide you through a set of dialogs to bind the tables to the entities, including
binding columns and keys to attributes, and binding table references to entity
relationships. It will also prompt you to bind columns and keys through table references
as appropriate, a binding not done by the DDL/ODBC import. Some automation has been
added to help the process, e.g. by binding columns to attributes by name.

COOL:Xtras Webview
OLE annotations are no longer lost
A change has been made to the BML viewer to correct the problem where OLE
annotations were not correctly drawn.
