1.

Introduction
The existing covered walkway at xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx to be demolished. The
existingstructure shall be removed completely to build a new covered walkway at
same locations.The existing walkway is a cantilevered structure supported by steel
elements and coveredwith roof tiles.
2.

Preparative Activities and Important Remarks


3.1.

All demolition works shall be comply SS 557: 2010 Code of Practice for
Demolition.Also the demolition of structure shall be carried out in accordance with
theprovisions set out in the Workplace Safety and Health Act.3.2.

All underground and above ground services at the site and around the site
perimetershall be detected and a services plan will be produced.i.e : A) Electricity;B)
Water;C) Gas;D) Telecommunication;E) Drainage;3.3.

Pre construction Survey shall be carried out including the proposed demolition
siteand the vicinity and a report shall be prepared. The report will sign by
neighboursand shall be submitted to consultants.3.4.

All utility companies and relevant agencies shall be consulted prior to demolition
of the structure if the corresponding services are going to be affected.3.5.

All the services within the area of demolition shall be terminated or capped off
andthe last manhole/inspection chamber shall be sealed.3.6.

The demolition plan shall ensure that during the course of demolition, no
existingutilities in the vicinity of the demolition sites are affected by the demolitiono
peration.

3.7.

RTO shall be provided for standing supervision during the demolition operation.

4.

Method of Demolition
4.1.

Top down method shall be implemented for the demolition.4.2.

Super structure and roof dismantling shall be carried out stage by stage
withoutaffecting the structural stability.4.3.

Roof shall be dismantled at first. The removal order shall be roof tiles and other
roof partitions then battens and finally rafters to follow.4.4.

Then the structural elements shall be dismantled. The dismantling area shall
beidentified and be checked on the discontinuity of structural system prior
to dismantle.4.5.

In the case when structural stability of beams is affected, the affected beams shall
bepropped prior to loss of support or restraint. Propping shall be provided until
theconfirmation of structural stability4.6.

The demolition order for the super structure shall be secondary beams, main
beamsand finally columns.4.7.

Plasma cutting shall be used if necessary to disconnect welded joints.4.8.

Once superstructure is removed, floor demolition shall be started.4.9.

Floor slab shall be demolished by gradually breaking away from the edge of
slab.4.10.

The reinforcement shall be remained and be cut off after the concrete is broken
away.4.11.

As the final process of the demolition, substructure shall be removed. First


thestumps then footings shall be hacked away. If require, an excavator shall be
providedto remove the footing.4.12.

Any holes/pits found shall be immediately backfilled with a suitable material

Safety Measures
5.1.

Risk assessment shall be carried out to identify hazards associated with


thedemolition process, assess such hazards and take reasonably practicable steps
toeliminate or control the risks arising from those hazards.5.2.

Workers shall possess valid work permit, SOC and in proper attire.5.3.

Personal Protective Equipment shall be provided to workers prior to the start


of work.5.4.

Safety belts with associated safety harness and lifeline to be provided for the
workersbased on whenever required.

5.5.

The perimeter of demolition site shall be hoarded up firmly with proper sealing.
Andsufficient covering shall be provided to prevent dust and debris flying away
toneighbourhood properties.5.6.

Sufficient Temporary Warning Signboards, Safety Barriers and Protective


Hoardingshall be provided and shall be maintained throughout the period of
operation.5.7.

Generally, there shall not be any site works during foul weather conditions.
6.

Environmental Aspects
6.1.

Noise controlling shall be carried out in accordance to CP 49:1989 - Code of


Practicefor Noise Control on Construction and Demolition Sites.6.2.

Noise monitoring equipment unit shall be provided according to


NationalEnvironment Agency regulations.6.3.

The noise monitoring equipment unit is installed as shown in the site plan.6.4.

Vibration monitoring shall be installed on site as shown in the site plan.6.5.

Method of demolition shall minimise noise emission as well as vibration


generation.6.6.

To minimize the dust impact, the structure shall be watered before demolition.6.7.

Water shall be continuously sprayed during any crushing operation.6.8.

Nettings/coverings shall be provided to minimise further dust spreading.6.9.

Dust mitigation measures shall be adopted to minimise dust emissions.6.10.

Burning of waste shall not be allowed.6.11.

All debris generated shall be kept at a designated area and be removed at the end
of the day to the skip tank.6.12.

Proper housekeeping shall be maintained throughout the whole operation.6.13.

Contractor shall be concerned about the neighbourhood cleanliness and shall


takeimmediate remedial actions if the neighbourhood has been affected by
thisdemolition activity.
7.

Waterproofing
7.1.

The party wall or external wall shall be protected against infiltration and
waterseepage when it is exposed to the weather. Proper plastering method shall be
carriedout for this purpose.7.2.

Proper covering such as gutter, flashing, canvas, etc. shall be provided at roof level
toprevent water seeping into neighbouring unit
