Chapter Logs and Practice Problems v.

Fall 2015
Adapted from C. Eckelmann

Beaulieu

I know that you all know how to read, but the way you read a textbook is inherently different than
reading a novel or a magazine article. This assignment is intended to raise awareness of your
reading process and help you to think about the way you are evaluating the material, also known
as metacognition. But this course is, at its core, a problem-solving course, and you must practice
problem solving to be successful. So in addition to the reading log, you must also attempt
problems for homework. There are additional practice problems suggested that you can also
attempt to improve your proficiency.
Chapter Logs are due in lecture the day that is specified!!! Assignments due on the days of
exams will be graded by you in a different color of ink from the one you used to complete the
assignment to receive full credit! Each is worth 7 points (4 points reading log, 3 points correctly
solved problem). Your top 14 scores will be used to calculate your final grade (the lowest two
scores will be dropped). CHAPTERS 2, 9, 11, 12, AND 15 ARE REQUIRED. THOSE SCORES
WILL NOT BE DROPPED!!!
The minimum requirement to receive full credit is to do the following in your own handwriting
that is legible!!!:
I.

Write an Initial Thought for the chapter, listing topics that you think the chapter will
cover and potentially how it relates to content from previous chapters.
After you read the title of the chapter but BEFORE you read the chapter, write
down some thoughts or ideas (2-3 sentences) that that chapter title generates.
For example, if a chapter was titled Introduction to Optics you might write An
introduction should give me a survey of the topics involved. Since this chapter is
on optics, I believe it will have something to do with lenses and my eyes. I hope I
wont need reading glasses!

II.

Identify at least five (5) main points from this chapter, and analyze the point.
Using a numbering or lettering system (A, B, C, or 1, 2, 3, or I, II, III etc, your
choice but BE CONSISTENT!) pick out the MAIN POINTS (cite the page
number!!!!) and define or explain it in your own words! After every main point,
write how you would connect that point to your own life experience (professional,
academic, or social), beginning with one of the following:
I got confused by
I got stuck when/where
I understood.
This reminded me of

ALL OF YOUR COMMENTS HAVE TO START WITH ONE OF THESE FOUR PHRASES!
Highlight the phrase in some way (underline or use a highlighter). Did I mention that all of your
comment sentences under your five main points must start with one of these? Following
instructions is important, and you MUST USE proper formatting to earn credit!
III.

Attempt all REQUIRED problems with work shown for each chapter.
You must attempt all REQUIRED problems with WORK SHOWN to receive full
credit. You will be assigned problems with answers in the back of the book so
that you can check your work as well as unsolved problems, three of which will
be selected by me and graded for correctness. Get in the habit right now of
showing me your work as you solve a problem, so that we can follow your
thought process later if you got stuck. A page full of just the answers will
receive NO CREDIT and will be of no use to you while studying later! Your work
can be a little disorganized, but all calculations should show units! I have also
listed recommended problems for extra practice. These are not required.
