All carries 10 points each

4 Do not write anything on the question paper.

5 Cellular phones are not required in the examination room.
6 Write in blue/black ink and draw in pencil.

HAVE A GOOD LUCK.

1. We know the function of the starter motor is to crank the engine now
give four ways the starter bendix gear is connected to the flywheel
ring gear.
2. Explain the difference between the motor and the generator?
3. With the aid of a neat diagram describe the construction of the
cranking motor.
4. Draw a neat sketch of a solenoid switch and explain its working
principles
5. Why the generators are not fitted with the permanent magnets?
6. Explain the working principle of a transistor in the electronic systems
7. Draw a neat starting system circuit showing all components.
8. Draw a neat horn circuit with relay.
9. Explain what part of dc generator produces emf and how?
10. An AC generator produces AC supply of emf, explain how this is
consumed in the automotive electric system?
11.Explain the working principles of a relay. (show by sketch)
12.Name the parts of DC and AC generator separately
13.What is the function of a capacitor as used in spark ignition system?
14.List down all items you need to lay down the head lamp circuit.

_______ JUNE 2013______

ANSWERS
Q1. The function of the cranking motor is to turn the engine for the purpose
of starting and it works by means of repulsion and attraction.
Q2. The motor changes electrical energy into mechanical energy, where the
generator changes mechanical energy into electrical energy.
Q3. See diagram 1.
Q4. The function of the solenoid switch in the starting system is to short
bridge the electric supply from the battery to the starter motor in order
to permit high current to flow from the battery to the motor.
See diagram 2.
Q5. The automotive generators are not fitted with permanent magnets for the
reason of easy control, where with variable magnetism caused by field
supply it becomes easy to control the output supply of the generator.
Q6. By means of solenoid switch
By mechanical means
By moving armature
By means of inertia motion.
Q7. See diagram 3.
Q8.See diagram 4.
Q9. The rotating part (armature) produces emf when the dc generator is
operated, after the field is energized by switching on the ignition circuit.
Q10. See diagram 5.
Q11.Testing of generator and starter motor windings are done by
Visual inspection if there is any outlook disorder, then check for:-

(i)
For open circuit
(ii)
For short circuit and
(iii) Grounded circuit.
Q12. AC gen. parts are :- Rotor, stator, Slip ring brushes, brush holder,
rectifier plate, end brackets, through bolts, rotor shaft.
And parts of DC gen. are:- Armature, field windings, pole shoes, housing,
commutater, brushes, brush holders, end brackets, through bolts, shaft and
bearing or bushes.
Q13. The automotive electrical system consumes the dc supply of emf
therefore the ac supplied by ac generator is converted into dc supply by the
use of rectifier set.
Q14. See the diagram.
The battery, wires, the head lamps, h. l. switch, deamer switch, etc.
