6. 6.6 KV SWITCHGEAR/Stage-II
6.01 INTRODUCTION
For the auxiliary equipments of the rating above 175 KW, we use 6.6
KV supply. For this purpose each unit has got two unit Auxiliary transformer
(UAT). To feed the Station 6.6KV buses, there are two station transformers
(ST3 &ST4). The HT supply for the UAT is directly tapped off the 15.75KV bus
duct from generator to GT, where as for the ST, it is from the 230KV buses.
The nameplate details of the above transformers are as follows.

6.02 LAYOUT
There are totally Fourteen 6.6 KV buses out of which eight for the units
(2 unit buses for each unit) six for the Station system.
The buses are designated as follows:
Unit 4

- Unit bus - 4A & Unit bus -4B.

Unit 5

- Unit bus - 5A & Unit bus - 5B.

Unit 6

- Unit bus - 6A & Unit bus - 6B.

Unit 7

- Unit bus - 7A & Unit bus 7B

Stations buses.

- C3A, C3B, C4A, C4B & C5A & C5B.

The supply to each unit bus (UB) is from the respective UAT through an
Incomer breaker. The two LV windings of station transformer 3 feeds two
station buses C3A & C3B through respective incomer breakers. Similar to ST3, ST-4 feeds the other two station buses C4A & C4B.
Each unit bus is tied to one of the station buses through a tie feeder
consisting of a breaker at both ends. Station bus C3A gives this tie supply to
unit bus 4A, 5A, 6A & 7A station bus C4A gives tie supply to unit buses 4B,
5B, 6B & 7B.
Apart from this the station buses C5A and C5B are fed through breaker
feeders from C3B and C4B respectively. The breakers at C5A and C5B are SF6
breakers and supply to ADPH transformers 1, 2, 3, & 4 are fed from these
buses C5A and C5B.
The various 6.6 KV loads connected to these various buses through an
individual breaker for each load.
Each 6.6 KV bus is provided with a PT, which is also of draw out type
with a voltage ratio of 6600/3: 110/3: 110/3 Volts. The tertiary winding is
open delta connected and is used to sense single phase to earth fault where

76
as the secondary winding is star connected with earthed neutral and is used
for measurement and other protections.

6.03 DETAILS OF BREAKERS

Among the 6.6 KV breakers there are three types viz. E7512/10 (used
for auxiliaries), E7525/10 (used for unit incomers and unit tie breakers) and
E75540/10 (used for station incomers & station tie breakers). The name plate
details of these breakers are as follows.

6.07 CONSTRUCTIONAL DETAILS

The circuit breaker is mounted on a draw out truck, which can be
pulled out of the cubicle. Apart from the cover provided on the truck itself, a
separate hinged door is provided to cover the circuit breaker chamber. This
door can be closed in service as well as in test isolated positions of the
breaker. A glass window is provided in this door through which the
mechanical indications of the circuit breaker can be seen. Automatic shutters
are provided in the circuit breaker chamber, which cover the main contacts,
this closes immediately after the breaker is withdrawn from the cubicle.
These shutters can also be locked in the closed position if the breaker is
retained outside the cubicle for considerably a long time. A pressure relief
vent is provided on the top of the circuit breaker. The driving in mechanism if
fitted with a mechanical interlock with the position of the circuit breaker. i.e.
The breaker can be closed only in two distinct positions i.e. in the service
position and test isolated position. Isolated position is same as test position,
but the play and socket of auxiliary circuit remains disconnected.
The circuit breaking poles and operating mechanism are housed in a
rigidly welded base frame. The frame is fixed to a draw out truck, which can
be drawn out from the cubicle horizontally. The 6 nos. main contacts shouted
with contact makings are mounted on the circuit breaker and are extended,
which pass through the center partition for making contacts with the
corresponding fixed contacts mounted on the cubicle. The terminals of the
control circuits of the breaker like under voltage release, shunt trip release,
contacts of auxiliary switch are terminated in a multi pin plug. The
corresponding wiring is made to the socket in the cubicle portion and the
socket is mounted in the plug chamber Interlocks are provided between the
position of circuit breaker and the plug such that;
a) The plug should have to be removed before the carriage is pushed
from test to service position.

78
b) The plug cannot be removed when the carriage is in service position, it
can be removed only when the carriage is brought to test position.
c) The carriage cannot be with drawn further from test position without
removing the plug.

6.08 OPERATION OF THE BREAKER

The breaker is closed with the help of stored energy in a spring. The
closing spiral springs are charged with the help of a 220V D.C. motor
mounted inside the circuit breaker frame. The motor circuitry is so wired that
the motor gets its supply as soon as the auxiliary contacts engage. As soon
as the springs are charged, a micro switch cuts off supply to the motor and
the breaker is ready for closing. The breaker is closed from remote when it is
in service position by a control switch. The breaker can also be closed in test
position by the local control switch, which is located on the breaker cubicle
itself. A local remote selector switch is also provided on the breaker panel,
which enables the selection from local or remote. The 220V DC supply to the
control circuits and the spring charging motor is made available through an
ON/OFF switch provided in the cubicle. As soon as the breaker closes the
closing springs get detention, auxiliary contacts of spring charging motor
engage to charge the springs as explained earlier.
The breaker can be tripped by energizing a shunt trip coil when it is in
service position this coil is energized by a trip impulse from the remote
control switch in test position, by a trip impulse from local control switch. The
breaker can also be tripped mechanically in both positions (service and test)
by operating the knob situated in the front of the breaker in the anticlock
wise direction.
The closing springs can also be charged mechanically with the help of
a cranking handle and should be rotated in clockwise direction by about 30
revolutions after which the springs get charged. The condition of closing
springs (charged/released) is indicated in the front by means of flags.
Mechanical indication for ON/OFF position of the breaker is also available, in
addition the following lamp indications are also available in the metering
compartment door of the panels.
