The GMTA Teacher Certification workbook is designed to give applicants an understanding in
what is required for certification. This book contains examples, tips and detailed analysis on
each of the 6 requirements to become a Globally Certified Teacher of Music.
If:

You are not currently studying for a music degree


You are not currently teaching an instrument
It has been several years since you last taught, performed or learned your certification
instrument
Then ensure your knowledge is at a suitable level to complete all the certification
requirements, if you are still unsure, you could take a GMTA Performer examination.

How To Submit Your Certification Required Documents.

Apply Now.
All essays must be submitted as one document. Accepted formats are: Word (.doc or
.docx), text (.txt) or .pdf. File name should be your name (e.g. JaneDoe.doc).
Upload your performance and teaching video (if this option is chosen) to any site of your
choosing e.g YouTube Dropbox. Simply paste the web address into the correct field on the
online application form. You can also email us any videos. gmtacertification@gmail.com
Please Note You must ensure you have complete parental permission to upload any
videos of children performing/being taught. GMTA and all its staff members accept no
responsibility for this.
Optional certificates and/or degrees that you would like to be submitted must be sent via
email as .pdf or .jpg files.
Whenever emailing any queries or documents or videos you MUST ensure that the subject
of the email is your full name so we can match it to your application.
All the materials prepared and submitted as part of your certification application must be
yours and yours alone. If two or more applicants submissions are identical to that of
another candidate, both candidates may be subject to disqualification without any fee reimbursement.
Please ensure that all your essays are easy to read and have a clear layout. Marks will be
deducted for poor layout, spelling, grammar and lack of content.

Completing All Six Requirements


Requirement #1 Identity Validation
In order to ensure the integrity and validity of the GMTAs Teacher certification process
photographic proof of I.D is required for ALL applicants. The ONLY accepted forms of I.D are:
Current Passport
Current Driving License
Your I.D will be requested during the online application process. Accepted file formats are .pdf
or .jpg.

Requirement #2 Write Your Teaching Philosophy


Write your teaching philosophy (maximum 450 words). Your teaching philosophy should
consist of:
Your Educational Goals Statement (the most important things you want your students
to learn to help them develop into competent musicians)
A short statement on Two additional topics from the list below.
1. How to teach a healthy technique.
2. Development of artistic and expressive performance skills.
3. How to teach different styles of learners e.g. Aural, Visual etc.
4. Your preferred age/level of students and why.
Your teaching Philosophy should fit on one page and each topic should have a subheading ( no
specific format is required, just ensure that it is easy for any examiner to read your essay)

Requirement #3 Analyse Two Teaching Pieces


Explain how you would teach two different pieces to a student. (Combined maximum of 300
words.) You can pick any two pieces of music. You must pick two pieces that are different in
terms of period e.g (baroque, classical, romantic, contemporary) YOU MAY NOT DO 2 PIECES
FROM THE SAME PERIOD e.g Two Contemporary will NOT be accepted.

Essay Format:

What would you discuss with the student concerning the musical time period,
composer and compositional style?

What major elements of theory would you discuss with a student? These elements
could, for example, include such information as key areas, cadence locations, important
modulations, interesting harmonies, the form of the piece, etc. You must be very
specific with this element, and be sure that you reference any bar lines/measure/beats
or timing of a piece/song. It is NOT necessary to send any copies of the score/piece you
are referring to.

Indicate at least one specific skill a student must possess to successfully play this piece.

Identify one potential reading and/or technical difficulties in this piece and how you
would help the student solve this problem.

Requirement
#4 Lesson Recording/Environment Essay
OPTION !
OPTION 1 Recorded Lesson
To prepare for this requirement:
Complete some practice recordings, this will help you and your student become
accustomed to the presence of the recorder and will ensure the camera is placed at
the best angle for viewing and hearing the lesson.

Be sure to place the camera so that the camera can see the student's body and the face
of both the student and teacher.

Editing the recordings is not compulsory and does not affect your application result.

You must get permission from your student or his/her parent/guardian.

Lesson Recording:
A. Record one 1015 minute lesson of the early stages of teaching a new piece, along
with technique, theory and any other elements you wish to include to present a wellrounded lesson. Make the title of your video your FULL NAME.

OPTION 2 Experience & Environment Essay


Your essay must NOT exceed a maximum 700 words (combining both the experience and
environment section.)
Experience:
1. Describe your teaching and learning experience and how these factors shaped
how you now teach.
2. Explain why and when you first started learning your instrument.
3. Explain what made you want to begin teaching.
Environment:
4. Describe how you encourage a positive teaching environment in your lessons.
5. Describe at least three resources you use to promote this positive learning
environment and how you use them to promote the positive environment.
These may include:
Photographs and/or video recordings of:
Studios or classrooms
Acoustic and/or electronic instruments
Computers and software
Audio/video recording equipment
Practice/incentive charts
Games and artwork
Other evidence that would demonstrate a positive teaching environment

REQUIREMENT #5 Teacher Performance


Record yourself performing a piece that demonstrates both your technical and musical ability.
Video Requirements:
The performance video consists of two segments

The first segment is your performance. Your performance piece must NOT be longer
than five minutes and does not have to be memorized.
The second segment of your video is your theory segment. In this section you must
explain 6 MAJOR elements of musical theory. This may be just general theory or a mix
of general and instrument specific theory. This section must NOT be longer than ten
minutes.

REQUIREMENT #6 Scenario Questions


This is the final requirement for your GMTA Teacher Certification application. There are three
different scenarios in which you must provide a reasonable solution to. The three scenarios are
listed below. Ensure you separate and label each scenario appropriately. The combined
maximum word count for this requirement is 600. Choose ONE from each of the three
categories below.
Category 1: DEALING WITH STUDENTS (Choose 1)
Over a six-week period a student makes excuses for poor lesson preparation and
makes promises for improvement, but nothing of significance changes.
The student is involved in too many activities and does not meet their practice
requirements.
Category 2: DEALING WITH COLLEAGUES (Choose 1)
A musical director wants your student to prepare a solo for a school concert, but
the assigned selection is too difficult.
A student of another teacher in the community calls you as they wish to transfer
because he/she dislikes the repertoire being studied with their current teacher.
Category 3: DEALING WITH PARENTS (Choose 1)
Family members want their child to audition for every talent contest, festival, and
competition available.
A student is studying a second instrument with another music teacher and the
parent tells the student he/she must make a choice between the two.
