Cemetery Symbols Program

Offered April 3 at Garst Museum

Heart & Soles Annual Community Event

To Be Held April 16 at Newton School

Angela Hoschourer, in cooperation with the Darke County

Genealogical Society, will present a program on Cemetery Symbols
on Sunday, April 3, 2 p.m., at the Garst Museum in Greenville.
Have you ever wandered through a cemetery and wondered about
the meanings of the designs carved on old gravestones? Thousands of
different religious and secular symbols and emblems have adorned
tombstones through the ages, indicating attitudes towards death and
the hereafter, membership in fraternal or social organizations, or an
individuals trade, occupation, or even ethnic identity. While many of
these tombstone symbols have fairly simple interpretations, its not
always easy to determine their meaning and significance.
Angela Hoschouer is the Manager of Development and
Marketing for Woodland Cemetery in Dayton. She has a history of
managing simple fundraising projects in the non-profit sector and
coordinating many of Daytons largest attended special events and
programs. Hoschouer is a founding member of the Randolph
Township Historical Society, a member of the Ohio Genealogical
Society with status as a First Family of Ohio, First Family of Greene
County, and a member of the Society of Civil War Families of Ohio.
This program is FREE and open to the public.
There will be refreshments served after the program, followed by
the meeting of the Darke County Genealogical Society.

The Heart & Soles annual community event will be held

Saturday, April 16, at Newton School in Pleasant Hill.
A Pancake Breakfast and Bake Sale will be held from 8-11 a.m.
A One-Mile Fun Run will begin at 9 a.m., and a 5K will follow at
9:30. To register, visit www.runsignup.com.
For additional information, call 937-875-9690 or email
Heartandsoles45359@gmail.com.
Proceeds from this event will provide support for families who
experience a health crisis. In addition, a portion of the proceeds will
provide scholarships for Newton seniors.
Pleas come out and support a great cause!

Diehl Cattle Company Awarded Cattlemens

Seedstock Producer of the Year
The Ohio Cattlemens Association awarded Charlie, Jordan, and Scott Diehl, owners of Diehl Cattle Company
of Bradford, the Seedstock Producer of the Year Award at the OCA awards banquet held January 23 at the Nationwide Hotel and Conference Center in Lewis Center, Ohio.
OCA and Farm World jointly sponsor the Seedstock Producer of the Year Award, which was created to recognize top beef seedstock producers in Ohio. The award was presented in a video that was sponsored by Darke
County Veterinary Services and Fulton Road Genetics and can be found on OCAs YouTube channel.
Diehl Cattle Company began with six registered Gelbvieh cows, has grown to a herd of 200 cows, and today
is one of the top seedstock producers in western Ohio. The bulls are marketed in Missouri at SeedstockPlus, a
network comprised of cattlemen from around the country marketing elite breeding cattle.
Charlie credited their success with the seedstock program to the networking opportunities theyve had with
others. The family also has a construction business, but in the future the family is hoping to rely more on the
cattle operation. Scott said, Our goal is to always try to improve our cow herd. The Diehl familys dedication
to improving their herd has been recognized by cattlemen throughout Ohio and across the country.

15 ACRL STS Oberly Award

Goes to Beard, Beard, and Beard

Alspaugh Named
To Fall Deans List
At Kent State Univ.

James B. Beard, Harriet J. Beard, and James C. Beard have been

selected as the 2015 recipients of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Science and Technology Section (STS)
Oberly Award for Bibliography in the Agricultural or Natural Sciences
for Turfgrass History and Literature: Lawns, Sports, and Golf.
The award was presented during the 2015 ALA Annual Conference in San Francisco. Clifford Haka, Director of Libraries at Michigan State University, accepted the award on behalf of the team.
Turfgrass History and Literature contains an extensive history of
turfgrass research and the development of turfgrass as an important
agricultural product. In addition, the book contains an extensive annotated bibliography of the literature of turfgrass, including many international publications. The bibliography entries are arranged by
author, and there is a brief biography of each author.
The book is an extremely rich resource, in that it is not only a
bibliography of resources related to turfgrass but also a valuable history of the field as well, said award Chair Nancy J. Butkovich of
Pennsylvania State University. It is illustrated with many historical
photographs, which add to the overall impact of the book. The bibliography shows a great breadth and depth in the coverage of the literature of the discipline, and it includes many historical and
international publications. The committee was also very impressed to
see that included brief bibliographies for the authors of many of the
resources included in the bibliography. This adds still more value to
the depth of the content as well as bibliographical information that
can sometimes be difficult to find.
James B. Beard is the president and chief scientist of the International Sports Turf Institute and a professor emeritus of Turfgrass Science at Texas A&M University. He holds an M.S. in Crop Ecology
and Ph.D. in Turfgrass Physiology from Purdue University and has
authored 358 peer reviewed papers, 564 technical papers, and nine
books, including a previous Oberly Award winner. Beard has served
as president of both the Crop Science Society of America and the International Turfgrass Society. His wife, Harriet J. Beard, and son,
James C. Beard, helped co-author Turfgrass History and Literature.
The Oberly Award was established in 1923 in memory of Eunice
Rockwood Oberly, librarian of the Bureau of Plant Industry, United
States Department of Agriculture from 1908 to 1921. She was the Bureau of Plant Industry's representative to the Congressional Joint Commission on Reclassification of Government Employees and was
instrumental in gaining a fairer recognition of library activities. This
biennial award is given in odd-numbered years for the best Englishlanguage bibliography in the field of agriculture or a related science.

Kent State University has announced that Blythe Alspaugh of

Covington has been named to
the Fall 2015 Deans List. Undergraduate students who obtain
a 3.400 GPA or higher while
maintaining 12 or more credit
hours qualify to receive this
honor.

VHCC Helped 197 Patients

Return Home in 2015
Versailles Health Care Center, a skilled nursing and rehabilitation
center offering short-term rehab services, outpatient therapy, and longterm care, is proud to have helped 197 patients return to their homes
in 2015 through its Homeward Bound Rehabilitation Programs.
Kristy Earick, VHCC Administrator, commented, We are proud
to have sent home 197 patients who utilized our short-term rehab services in 2015! We sent home 185 patients in 2014 and our goal for 2015
was to send 190 patients home, so we are excited to exceed our goal.
Our staff is committed to customer service and satisfaction and dedicated to providing the highest quality of care to our patients.
In honor of these patients, VHCC staff delivered care packages
during the week of January 11 to all patients sent home last year. The
center would like to thank all staff, residents, and patients who worked
so hard to make brownies and cookies which were included in the care
packages.
The Rehab Clinic offers programs specializing in cardiac recovery,
continence improvement, contracture management, fall management,
orthopedic-fracture recovery, pain management, pulmonary rehabilitation, respiratory specialty, stroke recovery, and wound care and skin
management. The highly trained nursing staff assists those patients
who need diabetic management, enteral therapy, IV therapy, medication management, ostomy care, post acute surgical wound care, and
other services requiring medical supervision.
Our goal for 2016 is to help 200 patients return to their homes,
said Earick. For additional information, call 937-526-0130 or visit
www.versailleshealthcare.com.
