About TAPMI

The T. A. Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) is located in the international university

town of Manipal (Karnataka). It is among the leading management institutes
in India, and is reputed for its academic rigor and faculty-student interaction.
Founded by the visionary, Late Shri T. A. Pai, TAPMI’s mission is to provide much
needed impetus to the task of building professional management capability
in the country. In the process, it has also played a role in strengthening the
existing educational and health infrastructure of Manipal.

Since its founding in 1984, TAPMI has received recognition and respect amongst
the well-known industrial houses and academic institutions in India for the quality of
its education. Over the years, the institute has earned a name for its Post Graduate
Programme in Management (equivalent to an MBA) and the quality of student
talent it has produced. Continuous improvements in the curriculum, structure,
academic systems and faculty resources have contributed significantly to
making TAPMI a preferred centre for management education. Today, over 1900
TAPMI alumni hold responsible managerial positions in India and abroad.
About the Curriculum

TAPMI’s PGDM programme of two-year duration has evolved

through a continuous interaction of the institute with the industry

TAPMI Infrastructure

campus in Manipal itself. The 42 acre campus has a built-up area of
2,50,000 sq. ft and is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.

By virtue of its sheer expanse and exquisite natural surroundings, the

The library is housed in a centrally air-conditioned three floored
independent building having plinth area of about 12,500 sq. ft. and
a seating capacity of 120 users. The print collection includes books,
periodicals, project reports, working papers and annual reports of
major limited companies. The electronic resources include audio/video
cassettes, CDs/DVDs and online/offline databases such as EBSCO’s
business source Complete, Proquest’s ABI Inform global, ISI Emerging
Markets, CRISIL’s Industry Analysis, NCTI’s trade-info, CMIE’s Prowess,
CapEx & EIS. The membership subscriptions include DELNET, McKinsey
Quarterly and American Information Resource Centre, Chennai.

TAPMI firmly believes in the maximal use of Information and

Communication Technology in all spheres of its activities. Faculty and
students extensively use ICT in teaching, learning, research, and allied
academic endeavors.

The institute has Video-Conferencing facilities which are used extensively

for group meetings, virtual and interactive lectures and discussions.
Two Computer Centre labs, a digital library, ten class rooms with full ICT

Accreditation (NBA), India and approved by the All India Council for
Technical Education (AICTE).
With over two decades of experience, TAPMI is a pioneer in
management education and has always been innovative in its
approach to management education. It has been updating its
curriculum and programme structure to incorporate the constant
evolution of new thoughts and practices in management, as well as
to address the emerging needs of the industry.

PGDM (Banking & Finance)*

There is a strong demand for qualified professionals in the
Banking, Insurance and Financial services industry and the PGDM
programme in Banking and Finance would help those desiring to
find a managerial career in the financial services industry.

PGDM (International Business)*

Businesses now require an outlook which is global in nature with a
clear focus on the nuances of doing business internationally. This
course is designed to impart skill-sets to those aspiring to do or
manage international businesses.

PGDM (Health-Care Management)*

With the emphasis given to health-care services and its
management, a number of professionals are being absorbed in
this particular area to augment the services offered by the medical
fraternity. Manipal is home to a large number of institutions offering
medical education and hence TAPMI has the unique advantage and
the expertise to offer a world class management programme in this
field.

Field Based Experiential Learning
The curriculum places great emphasis on field based experiential learning. Keeping
this in mind, TAPMI has many components in its Programme that are field-based,
such as Management-in-Practice (MIP), Outbound Programme and NGO Project.

Management-in-practice
TAPMI has many innovations to its credit. One of the more significant among
them is the Management in Practice (MIP) programme. MIP provides unique
opportunities to the students to get deeper insight and understanding about
organizations and their management practices under the expert guidance of an
industry mentor. The Association of Indian Management Schools presented this
programme the ‘Best Innovation in Management Education Award’.

Outbound
This week long programme, conducted by a specialized agency, requires students
to go through a series of activities in a challenging environment where even the
simplest tasks require planning, leadership, communication and team-work. After
going through this experience, students reflect on their learning and experiment
with new behaviours. Students are expected to make sense out of uncertainty
with the limited resources available to them and to realize the importance of team
work, communication, physical fitness as well as develop sensitivity towards the
environment.

NGO Project
The NGO Project is an important component of TAPMI’s Post Graduate Programme.
This programme enables students to sensitize themselves to the issues of
social development and management by experiential learning. Working with and
contributing to the management of NGOs, the students develop new perspectives
with respect to the role of business in society.

TAPMI Silver Jubilee Leadership Lecture Series

The TAPMI Silver Jubilee Leadership Lecture Series is a series of lectures

by eminent personalities who have made significant contribution to the
growth of the country through their professional achievements. These
lectures were initiated by Tapmi as a move to commemorate its 25th year
of inception (1984-2009) and to honour the commitment and vision of the
Late Shri T. A. Pai. In all, TAPMI plans to organize twenty five such lectures by
inviting eminent Indian personalities with a similar drive and passion as its
founder, Shri T. A. Pai.
The first in the series of lectures was held in December 2009 and the guest
speaker for the occasion was Shri Salman Khurshid, Union Minister of State
(Independent charge) for Corporate Affairs and Minority Affairs. Mr Khurshid
delivered a lecture on ‘Corporate Governance’. In his address, he talked
about taking corporate governance in India to a superior level by using
the Advocacy model. He also emphasized that the main aim should be to
facilitate the transition of the directors of a company from being just the
controllers of an organization, to enlightened partners and regulators in the
growth of the company.
The second lecture was organized in March 2010. The speaker on this
occasion was Shri Rajdeep Sardesai, Editor-in-chief, CNN-IBN, and a renowned
journalist. Mr Sardesai delivered a lecture on ‘Customer Orientation and
Objective Journalism’. In his customary fashion of wit and humour, he talked
about how 24-hour news channels in the country have become “gigantic
beasts of journalism that need to be constantly fed”. He candidly discussed
the short-comings of sting journalism and shared his views on the much
debated topic of ‘paid news’.
Life @ TAPMI

Despite the academic rigour, numerous seminars, guest lectures and

symposiums that the students of TAPMI attend, the energy to pursue
cultural activities is always high. Keeping this in mind, TAPMI gives the
students various platforms to showcase their creative talents. Some of
the intra-cultural events that rock the campus are:

Episode – A three to five days cultural extravaganza specially designed

for the purpose of breaking the ice between the recently joined juniors
and the seniors. This event involves participation of students in various
games, competitions and provides some stellar performance and
showcase of hidden talents. Last year’s theme, “The Age of Havoc”
brought out the best of art, creativity and performances from the
students of the 2009-11 batch.

Goonj – A musical evening showcasing the talents of the students and

the faculty. This event spans across modern rock to classical ghazals
and involves various genres of music. A treat to every audiophile!

Naach – An evening of intense energy which involves the students

performing various styles of dance from Indian classical to hip-hop.
From solo performances to group dances, the event promises non-stop
entertainment.

Speed – TAPMI’s very own Olympics! The two week sporting extravaganza
generates healthy competition amongst students in various solo and
team events. With adrenalin running high, students participate in
sports ranging from football to athletics.

Student Exchange Program

The T A Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) nurtures a vision to be a global
business school. At TAPMI, we have designed and developed student
and faculty exchange programs to promote a greater understanding
of international issues that increases the competencies of faculty
and students who will live and work in an increasingly interdependent
world.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed with Sheffield
Hallam University, UK for student and faculty exchanges, under which
five TAPMI PGDM students visit and study at the Sheffield Hallam
University for a duration of 3 months during their course.
