BOMs in CRM for non VC products

Jai Sharma
Nov 7, 2006 7:53 PM
Hello CRM Gurus
I have successfully replicated CRM object BOM for downloading the BOM structure from R/3 into CRM..
Now the question that I have is to locate these BOMs in CRM...Which transaction will help me find the BOMs created
in CRM? Shall I see them in Product relationsships?
PLease advise.
Regards
Jai

Also please note that we are not using variant configuration for BOM...It is just a simple BOM explosion without
requiring VC..
Thanks much

Hi,
As far as my knowledge goes, there is no easy way to download R/3 sales BOMs into CRM. When you create sales
BOMs in R/3, all materials involved will get replicated into CRM, but the BOM relationships will not get downloaded.
Here is what we have done in our implimentation:
We created structured products in the CRM system and uploaded them to the SAP ERP system where they are
stored as bills of material (BOMs). This is necessary if you need to create a sales order in the SAP ERP system. To
upload a structured product to the SAP ERP system, you use product maintenance. Define the usage 5 for sales bill
of material and specify the location
(plant). For more information, see the SAP Library under Master Data > Products > Uploading Structured Products to
OLTP Systems.
Structured products can be copied automatically from CRM
Enterprise to CRM Mobile via CRM Middleware. For more
information, see Master Data > Products > Product Maintenance > Creating Structured Products in CRM.

Hi Paul

Although I am a little bit more confused

but thanks for your reply...It has certainly clarified few things for me...

But the question that I still have is that if BOMs cannot be downloaded to CRM from R/3 thenwhy does SAP provide
object BOM to use for downloading..
Also now I am wondering if we were to use full blown VC with knowldge bases for runtime and using BOMs in R/3,
how would we then proceed to replicate the same in CRM?
If any VC gurus, check this note, please let me know your thoughts..
Regards
Jai
PS: Paul: will it be possible for us to exchange few emails on the topic? Thanks

Jai,
For the structured products we can download the BOM using the object BOM from CRM 5.0 onwards( to my
knowledge ). But the following restriction applies
--Multilevel bills of material are not allowed. Materials that constitute the header material of a BOM may not be used
as components in a BOM.
--Change management is not supported, meaning that it is not possible to assign any type of validity, such as time.
--Structured products cannot be defined for a specific organization, but are always valid across clients. This means
that only group BOMs or BOMs from a specific plant can be downloaded.
--Alternative BOMs or different BOM usages, such as multiple BOMs, are not allowed.
--Attributes at header level cannot be stored. The reference quantity at header level is always 1 base unit of measure.

--The only attribute at component level is the quantity (in the component base unit of measure).
--A material may only be used once as a component in a BOM.
--Configurable products cannot be used as a header product or component.
If you are using full blown VC, you can create runtime versions of knowledge bases and download the object SCE for
downloading configuration data.
Thank You,
Vimal

Thanks Vimal. So you also agree that if I want to download BOMs for non configurable products, I need to fist set
them up as structured products in CRM and then push them to R/3. Now will that help me in specifying the quantities
as I would normally use in r/3 when maintaining BOMs?
What if I mark my items as configurable in R/3, create runtime versions and then use SCE object in CRM to download
the BOMs? Do you think that would work?
Please advise...
Paul and Vimal: I have opened up OSS note and if I hear anything different, I will keep all posted...Regards. Jai

Hi Vimal, Paul
WHen I try to use R3as for object bom, ssytem issues following warning:- We are using CRM 5.0. This tells me that
standard BOMs can be downloaded. What do you think?
-

Warning Message----There are restrictions when downloading bills of material (see long text)

Diagnosis
You peformed an initial download for the BOM middleware object. This middleware object can be used to download
standard bills of material from an OLTP R/3 System to the CRM/EBP System with the following restrictions:

components in a BOM.
Change management is not supported, meaning that it is not possible to assign any type of validity, such as time.

Attributes at header level cannot be stored. The reference quantity at header level is always 1 base unit of measure.
The only attribute at component level is the quantity (in the component base unit of measure).
A material may only be used once as a component in a BOM.
Configurable products cannot be used as a header product or component.

Hi Paul
Thanks this helps...
On the documentation it mentions To copy a structured product to the SAP ERP system, you use product
maintenance. Define the usage 5 for sales bill of material and specify the location (plant).
Please advise as to where do iI see it? For location, I used BP number in the sales area data but for usage I do not
know where to input it...
Let me know please.
Thanks

Hi Paul
Quick question. I am expporing the option of pushing structured products from CRM to OLTP r/3..
For this upload do I still use R3AS to upload? If so could you please tell me which object to use for structured
products upload?
Thanks so much

Hi Jai,
You are right. The only exception is configurable BOM, which is allowed for the download. As far as I know, in CRM
4.0 the BOM that is distributed to CRM from R/3 are those BOMs that are part of a configurable object and are
brought over as part of a Knowledge base
You should get an message something like below, when you are replicating the BOM object
"You have performed an initial download for the middleware object BOM. The middleware object cannot be used to
download standard bills of material from the OLTP R/3 System to the CRM/EBP System. It can only be used to
download the structured articles (sets, displays, and prepacks) available in a Retail system to the CRM/EBP System."

Thanks Paul...
So if we were to use boms for configurable items, then will I see the relationship in CRM when viewing Product
master under relationships?
Also would you know what does CORE/S, CORE/D mean under relationship tab for product master?

Hi Jai,
Please refer to this CRM 5.0, SAP official help documentation on structured products. Read the document carefully
and answers all your questions.

Hi Paul
In CRM 5.0, I am now able to replicate the BOMs from R/3 to CRM...When the BOMs are downloaded from R/3,
CRM builds it as a relationship and then I can explode this single level BOM in CRM transactions...
Take care

Hi Jai,
That means the documentation is wrong.
I am really surprised to see that BOMs can be donloaded. Apart from using the download object BOM, what other
activities need to be carried out to get the BOM relationships into CRM?
Also, I belive before the BOM download you have downloaded the component products. Have downloaded the main
product also?
I am really excited to hear more from you on your acheivement.
Thanks,

Paul/Jai,
The documentation says that you can download BOM's to CRM 5.0 with some restrictions.
We are having the following restriction in downloading the BOM items.
--Configurable products cannot be used as a header product or component.
Its great to hear that Jai got the BOM's into CRM. Did you have development done? Do you have any idea how we
can bypass this restriction to bring the BOM products into CRM?
Thank You,
Vimal John

Re: BOMs in CRM - How to locate in CRM Once downloaded?

Jai Sharma Nov 16, 2006 10:47 PM (in response to Jai Sharma)
Hi all
Yes...Seems like documentation is not correct. In CRM5.0, once I download plants as BPs, I can start the BOM
download only for universal BOMs...We need to set filers up for DNL_Plant object, for plant (WERKS). If we dont do

that then SAP just finds the plant for the first BOM it finds, and thenmakes that as a default plant. This means that if
there other materials in different plants, that wont be downloaded...
Now any change I make to a universal BOM in R/3, gets reflected in CRM right away in product relationship.
Sorry for a little latereply.

Jai
