FIRST CLASS FIREFIGHTER, ANDERSON FIRE DEPARTMENT

Incumbent serves as First Class Firefighter and responds to fire calls while on duty.

DUTIES: Enforces local, state and federal laws by implementing effective policy for the prevention
and investigation of arson and other violations and the protection of lives of the public.
Rides on appropriate firefighting equipment to fire scene, and assists with setting up the equipment.
Assists other firefighters at fire scene by securing appropriate equipment from engine and attacking
the fire.
Responds to other emergencies, such as vehicle crashes, water accidents, and other emergency
related incidents when required.
Inspects and inventories firefighting equipment, including trucks to assure optimum working condition
and reports defects to officer in charge.
Maintains station premises according to specified schedule.
Maintains good public relations by occasionally making fire safety presentations to school children
and conducting tours of facility.
Participates in tours of buildings and assists in the preparation of pre-fire plans.
Administers first aid to fire victims and other firefighters until arrival of emergency medical crews.
Reviews firefighting manuals, street maps, and other related documents.
Performs related duties as assigned.
I. JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK Knowledge of and ability to make practical
application of the customary practices, procedures, rules and regulations of the department.
Knowledge of applicable City and State laws, guidelines and accepted fire fighting practices,
procedures and training programs.
Knowledge of and ability to administer all established policies of the City as assigned.
Successful completion of training as a First Responder within time period specified by Department.
Knowledge of and the ability to properly use all department equipment, including protective clothing
and head gear, axes, ladders, generators, and hoses.
Ability to attain knowledge of geographical area, street names and landmarks within fire district.

Possession of a valid Indiana drivers license and demonstrated safe driving record.
Working knowledge of vehicle mechanics for minor maintenance.
Ability to effectively communicate with the public, other officials and agencies.
Ability to work irregular and extended hours during emergency situations.
Ability to physically perform the essential duties of the position.
Ability to meet all departmental hiring and retention requirements, including not posing a direct threat
to the health and safety of other individuals in the work place.
II. RESPONSIBILITY Incumbent performs a wide variety of duties according to standard operating
procedures of the department to ensure proper operation and maintenance of all Fire department
equipment and apparatus. Errors in decision may result in major property loss and possible loss of
life to self, co-workers and members of general public.
Incumbent is responsible for the prevention and extinguishment of fire, and the protection of lives and
property inherent to this duty.
III. PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS Incumbent maintains regular contact with Fire
department superiors and associates, other City departments, and the general public for the purpose
of responding to alarms for the prevention and extinguishment of fire, and the protection of lives and
property in connection thereof.
Supervision follows clearly defined chain of command to Fire Chief.
Reports directly to Company Captain.
IV. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT Incumbent performs duties in a fire station
and at fire scenes, with exposure to noxious gases and fumes, extreme heat, and inclement weather
at fire sites. Emergency situations require lifting and carrying of heavy equipment, hoses, and
protective clothing, as well as climbing, crouching, and other positions of intense strain.
