Objectives of the Course


Through this module you will explore the relationship between image, music and
sound. You will learn how to enhance visuals through the use of sound effects and
original scoring. The students will have regular short tasks to familiarize different
aspects of the sound and video relationship. This may include TV advertisement,
cartoon, branding, film and other media.

Learning Outcomes
After completion of the course students are expected to be able to:
1) Have an aesthetic approach and a good understanding of the range and
context of the way music has been utilized in movies, films, TV spots,
videogames, etc. both historically and in the present time.
2) Develop key theoretical concepts which will support the given assignments.
3) Explore a variety of stylistic compositional approaches (e.g. classical,
impressionism, 12-tone, minimalism, etc.) which will enhance the stylistic
awareness of the student and demonstrate ways in which these idioms have
been drawn upon in various multimedia projects.
4) Learn how to utilize a broad range of recording as well as notation
idiosyncrasies in software (e.g. timestamp, hit-points, etc.).
5) Develop a practical understanding of fundamental skills for producing sound
for film, television, computer games, etc.

Course Contents
Theory and practice in sound synthesis and sampling and genre-specific tasks
(e.g. Musique Concrete, Elektronische Musick, ambient music, contemporary
electronic music).
Stylistic compositional assignments (from Baroque to 20th Century) that
heightens the sense of stylistic awareness of the student.
Multitrack recordings for various projects. Use of Sound Effect libraries.
Notational and sound idiosyncrasies in animated films.
Use of voice-overs in television or film production.
Use of dubbing, dialogue, underscore sounds, etc.
