WARM-UP :
Spiral warm-up from seventh grade curriculum.
OPENING:
Dennis has a sailboat. The sail on his boat is in the shape of a triangle with
the side lengths of 6 feet, 8 feet, and 10 feet. The teacher will pose the
question, Does those dimensions work to form a triangle? The teacher will
use the Promethean Board to recreate this sail. The students will see that the
dimensions do create a triangle. The teacher will pose the question: Do any
three lengths from a triangle?
WORK SESSION
In order to answer the question with justification, the students will
complete an inquiry lab, Create Triangles. Using straws pre-measured
and cut into lengths that equal 3, 4, 4, 5, 8, 8, 8, 13, 15, 15, 15, and 15
centimeters. Students will arrange three pieces that each measure 15
centimeters to see if a triangle can be created. Students will continue to use
the straws to attempt recreating triangles with different lengths. The
students will complete the table prompting them to give different sides and
lengths of triangles.

Other:
After completing the first part of the lab independently, students will work
in pairs to recreate triangles with given lengths. Using the recording sheet,
students will circle yes or no based on their answers.
Students will analyze with their partners, the next chart based off of the
results from Step 3s chart. Students will determine if the sum of the
lengths of the two smaller side have any connection with the creation of
triangles.
CLOSING (MINUTES):
The teacher will use the following question to guide discussion:
What do you notice about the figures with a Side 1 and Side 2 sum that is less
than the length of Side 3? With that question, students are expected to arrive at the
sum of the two smaller lengths of triangles must be LARGER than the third side in
order to create a triangle.
