3.1 BlueAIS Outstanding Features

BlueAIS does not occupy any valuable under
deck space as it is designed exclusively for
outdoor installations.
It reduces overall cabling from typically 3
cables in case of a common AIS design to
only 1 power supply cable in case of the
BlueAIS transponder.
A complete elimination of antenna cables
and splitters enables larger communication
range, as there is no attanuation of VHF
signals.
"All Integrated (All-in-one) Design" where all
antennas, radio electronics, power supply
etc. are packed in one single housing.
"All Digital" external signals enable the
highest quality of service and reliability of
operation in any environment (in any
circumstances).
Fully waterproof seal. This is BlueTrakers
primary shell housing certified to IP68 and
IP69K.

4 AIS System - Basic information

4.1

About your AIS Class B

Transceiver

AIS is an Automatic Identification System

(AIS) - a shipboard short range (typ. 30 nm)
identification system used on ships to identify and
locate vessels by electronically exchanging data with
other nearby ships and with shore-based stations.
Position, bearing and speed of nearby vessels can be
displayed on a ships mapping plotter. AIS also
enables maritime authorities to track and monitor
vessel movements along their coast if they invest in
shore- based AIS receivers. AIS uses VHF radio
broadcasts to transmit and receive vital information
in regular time intervals.
The marine Automatic Identification System
(AIS) is a location and vessel information reporting
system. It allows vessels equipped with AIS to
automatically and dynamically share and regularly
update their position, speed, course and other
information such as vessel identity with similarly
equipped vessels. Position is derived from the Global
Positioning System (GPS) whereas communication

between vessels is enabled by Very High Frequency

(VHF) digital transmissions.
There are several types of AIS devices:
Class A transceivers.
They are designed for usage on large vessels
such as cargo ships and large passenger ships.
Class A transceivers operate at a higher VHF
signal power than class B transceivers and can
therefore communicate by more distant
vessels. They also transmit more frequently
then Class B transceivers. All vessels over 300
gross tons on international voyages and certain
types of passenger vessels under the SOLAS
must be equipped by Class A transceivers.
Class B transceivers.
They are similar to class A transceivers in many
ways, but are normally lower cost due to the
less strength and performance requirements.
Class B transceivers transmit at a lower power

7 BlueAIS Electrical Installation

The BlueAIS transceiver unit is supplied with a 15

meters long power and data cable as an integral part of the
transceiver unit. If you require longer cables to reach your
power supply, please ensure that the cables are suitable for
electric currents of up to 2A peak and 500mA on average.
Means of connecting the cables together will also be
required. The use of connection box (Conbox) is
recommended for this purpose.
The AIS transceiver requires a 12V power supply
typically provided by the vessel's battery. It is
recommended that BlueAIS is connected to one of
the spare essential circuits (24 hr power supply).
Do not use a 24V power supply with an AIS
transceiver. If a 24V power supply is
connected to an AIS transceiver, an internal
protection system is triggered and the AIS
transceiver does not operate normally.
However, no permanent damage is caused.
The AIS transceiver operates normally once
connected to a 12V power supply.
Electrical connection of the cable should be
done according to the wiring diagram, that
can be found on the next page.

7.1

Installation guidelines

It is recommended that crimped and

soldered plugs are used to connect the AIS
transceiver to the power source.
It is recommended that the power supply is
connected via a suitable circuit breaker and/or 3A
fuse block.
Use appropriate mounting/fastening
material to attach the cable to the vessel at
least every 30 cm of the cable.
Avoid running the cable near exhausts,
direct heat and steam exposure, loading
places, passages and out of reach of
unauthorized personnel.
Sometimes it may be necessary to run the
cable through a pre-drilled hole. Use a
waterproof grommet and apply marine
sealant.
Do not apply power until all cables are
properly wired, checked and attached onto
the vessel.

Connection to a Chart Plotter

In order to display the received AIS

messages such as other vessels on your chart plotter,
you will need to connect your AIS transceiver to your
chart plotter. Please refer to the user manual supplied
with your chart plotter for details about how to
connect and configure your chart plotter for use with
AIS devices. For general guidance your chart plotter
should be configured to accept NMEA data at 38400
baud rate (sometimes referred to as 'NMEA HS' in the
plotter configuration menu). You may also need to
enable the display of AIS targets in the chart options.

Please note that the 'Receive' connections

may not be needed when connecting to your chart
plotter as it is not normal for the transceiver to
receive data from the chart plotter.
Use the supplied fast wire connectors
material or another appropriate material to achieve
secure water tight connection.

PWR+
PWR-

The NMEA0183 data port provides the

connection to your chart plotter and consists of four
wires which are colour coded as shown in the Table 1
and in Figure 2. Connect the wires to the appropriate
connections on your chart plotter. Please refer to your
chart plotter manual for detailed information.

Connecting to a PC

AIS messages sent out from BlueAIS

transponder can also be displayed on a PC. You only
need a suitable charting software to display the
received AIS messages from other vessels. This can
be accomplished by connecting the RS232 port of an
AIS transceiver directly to the PC, or via a suitable
RS232 to USB converter if your PC does not have an
RS232 port. When doing so, please pay attention to
set your PC's port to 38400 boude rate and not to any
lower communication speed.
A relatively high communication speed is
allowed when using original manufacturer's cable at a
length not exceeding 15 meters. It is also essential to
connect the cable shielding to a power supply
negative terminal in order to achieve a reliable
communication.
If you intend to use longer cable you will
probably loose some reliability of communication. In
that case we suggest using NMEA0183 data port and
a suitable converter at the side of the PC.
We do not encourage you using lower baud
rates for displaying AIS messages. It may lead to lost
messages in situations of congested maritime traffic.
For configuration of the AIS transceiver it is
necessary to connect it to a PC in case your AIS

transceiver has not been pre-configured by your

dealer. See section 8. for more details dealing with
configuration.
You have to provide connection between the

supplied serial cable and the BlueAIS connection

cable according to Serial connection diagram below.

The 'Serial data' page provides a view of all incoming and outgoing AIS messages. The messages are encoded in
a special format and it is not necessary to understand the meaning of the messages to use the equipment. The serial data
page includes the facility to capture your AIS data during a journey and then play it back using the 'Open log file' command
in the 'File' menu.

Status Indication

Operating status of the BlueAIS transceiver

is shown by STATUS LEDs on the bottom of the unit.
The meaning of typical indicator configurations is
described in the table below:

Green (Power)
When lit indicates that power has been connected
correctly to the transponder, that the transponder
hardware has been configured, that the operating software
is present, that the CPU has booted up, the application
software is running, the GPS unit is operational and at least
one position report has been sent.
Yellow (TX Timeout)
When lit indicates that the transmitter is
prevented from transmitting. Reasons for this include the
following:
* The transponder's internal GPS receiver is not
operating or is not yet ready.
* The transponder was unable to transmit an
AIS message due to the channel being already occupied,
e.g. by transmissions from other AIS transponders.
Red (Status)
When lit indicates one of the following status
conditions:
* Stuck transmitter lockout timer (1 second
maximum) has operated?
* Software watchdog timer has operated.
* Frequency synthesiser PLL out of lock
(receiver or transmitter)..
Blue (Silent mode)
When lit indicates that the 'Silent mode' is
engaged (transmitter is disabled)

11 Troubleshooting
Issue
No data is being
received by the chart
plotter

Possible Cause And Remedy

Check that the power supply is connected correctly.
Check that the power supply is a 12V supply.
Check that the connections to the chart plotter are correct.

No indicators are
illuminated

Check that the power supply is connected correctly.

Check that the power supply is a 12V supply.

The Red 'error' indicator

is illuminated

The unit may not have a valid MMSI. Check that the AIS transceiver is correctly
configured with a valid MMSI.
The VHF antenna may be faulty. Please check the connection to the VHF antenna and
that the VHF antenna is not damaged. The red indicator may illuminate briefly if the
power supply is interrupted or the VHF antenna characteristics are briefly affected.
The GPS antenna may be faulty. Please check the connection to the GPS antenna and
that the GPS antenna is not damaged.
The power supply is outside the allowable range. Check that the power supply is within
the range 9.6V to 15.6V.
If none of the above corrects the error condition, please contact your dealer for
advice.

My MMSI is being
received by other
vessels, but my vessel
name is not shown on
their chart plotter or PC

Some older AIS devices and chart plotters do not process the specific class B AIS
message which provides the vessel name (message 24). This is not a fault of your AIS
transceiver. Software upgrades are available for many older chart plotters which will
correct this issue. The other vessel should update its AIS unit and/or chart plotting
software to receive AIS message 24.

If the guidance given in the table above does not rectify the problem you are experiencing, please contact your dealer for further assistance.
