New Outlook Ch.137

The new look for the Heartland Journal

Hello everyone and welcome to our
new look for the Heartland Journal.
We have been working on this and it
is time to get some news out to the
pioneers here in Omaha. I am Steve
Miller the newly elected senior vice
president of the council and the new
editor of the newsletter. Please send
all information for the newsletter to
me.

Project Connect
The Heartland Council is pleased to
announce its first Project Connect
contest for 2007. We're giving
away Samsung MP3 Players to one
randomly chosen student and one
Internet Coordinator whose
organization is part of our Project
Connect Community.
Project Connect teaches
telecommunications technology
through playing computer games on
the internet. It was designed to be
used by children in grades 4 through
7; however, anyone might have fun
playing.
This product is offered free of charge
and is available only through
TelecomPioneers. Some further
information can be obtained from the
website www.telecompioneers.org.
This contest is scheduled to close on
May 15th. Anyone wishing to see a
demonstration, please contact Jerry
Golmanavich at 402-390-9834 or
telecompioneer@cox.net.

Anyone Have Any Yarn???

At each Hooks and Needles gathering
donated yarn is distributed and the
creative minds and busy fingers
make the donations into useful
products to donate. The well is
running dry.
It would be really great if you might
have some yarn lying around that
you would be willing to donate. How
about asking some friends for some
yarn?
If you'd like to bring some yarn to
any one of the luncheons, please do
and we will get it to the ladies to
use. The ladies that knit these items
would appreciate it very much and it
would help reduce the committees
cost for yarn. Any yarn that is
donated will find itself in the hands
of someone who needs a nice handmade item.

Items knitted by the Hooks and

Needles ladies this past month.

exceed the goal of 62,000
memberships.

available at a discounted price of
$68 during the drive, which runs

needs to know who the gift is for
(adult, so they may show
identification)

Hug-A-Bear

Blood Drive

Marcy and Steve Dawkins have a

way with the Hug-A-Bears. Did you
know last year the committee
delivered over 1600 bears to the
Police, Fire, Sheriffs Office,
Methodist Hospital and many more
worthy places. They were also
recognized at the Annual Meeting at
the chapter level.

The Heartland Council blood drive

at the CSMI campus that was
scheduled for Friday, the 13th of
April, from 7:00 am till 12:00 noon
in the Jim Andry All Employee
Auditorium had to be canceled
because of extensive remodeling
that was taking place that wasnt
finished. We are hoping to be able
to reschedule for a date in May to
hold the bloodmobile. Please watch
the web and other announcements
for the new date.

They have had a challenging month

with the snow and other events that
Douglas County Extension has
going on, AND really need a place
of their own. Also if you would like
to exercise your fingers THEY NEED
SEWERS, please call Marcy at the
Extension office on 444-5187 on
Tuesday mornings.
Currently they meet at the Douglas
County Extension building on
Tuesday from 8 AM 12PM.
Located at 80th & Center Street.

Adopt A Park Or Highway Or

Plant A Tree
It's been awhile since we planted
those trees at Deer Hollow Park,
but from afar they look like they're
thriving. Tree planting is so much
fun as well as the other activities.
All we need is to find a chairperson.
Call Joe if interested.

Heartland Pioneers

The 80th Annual Meeting was held

at the famed Disneyland Hotel and
Resort. More than 800 Pioneers
and guests attended the event,
which was based on the theme
Pioneer: Initiative: 3 or
P:I:3. The theme reflected the
launch of three Pioneer initiatives
focusing on membership,
education, and technology and
the actions Pioneers will take to
deliver these initiatives.
We will be talking more about this
Initiative in the months to come
and the things that will be
happening so stay tuned for further
details.

Making a 911 Call

Annual Meeting 2007

Region Meeting
The Annual Meeting took place on
Friday and Saturday and the Region
meeting for the New Outlook
Pioneers was scheduled for
Wednesday and Thursday before
the Annual Meeting.

The key things coming from the

Region meeting was that they have
hired an IT person to start work on
a new region web site. At this time
it isnt known when it will go on line
but we all look forward to seeing a
new web site for the region.
The other thing was that the
executive committee extended Bob
Pohly for one year more beginning
on January 1, 2007. Bob has
announced that he will be retiring
at the end of the year and a new
region vice president will be
selected.
The word is that each of the
chapters will be able to nominate
one candidate that will be eligible
for the selection process. That is
about all the details that we have
on that right now.
Our projects that were recognized
were Project Connect, Hug-A-Bear
and Hooks and Needle.

911 Simulator

Electronic Maps

The 911 Simulator program was

developed by Pioneers to teach
children how to phone for help in an
emergency, duplicating the exact
process experienced during a real
911 call.

The Pioneer Electronic Map was

introduced by Pioneers in Boise,
Idaho, and is gaining popularity as
a useful and innovative teaching
tool in our schools.

We purchased the system kit a few

years ago and had a chairman all
set up and then due to other
commitments he had to withdraw
from the project.
If you enjoy working with young
kids 3 to 10 this would be a great
activity for someone that was
looking for something to do.
If anyone out there is interested
please contact Steve Miller for more
details. Give him a call thats all it
takes.

Its primary purpose is to teach the

correlation between the 50 United
States and their capital cities in the
US and the Provinces and their
capitols in Canada.
The portable 22-by-21-inch US and
Canada map enables it to be used
in virtually any location and is a
valuable complement to the
Playground Map project.
We need some people that are
handy with their hands and their
shop tools to make some of these
for us. If you would like to make
some get in touch with Gordy Viner.

Fund Raising
As the pioneers evolve we are
finding that our streams of revenue
are no longer there and we need to
keep raising funds to keep going.
A revenue project has been
presented to the pioneers and that
is running a concession stand at the
Qwest center during a few of there
major events during the year. They
allow charitable organizations to do

this three and sometimes four

times a year.
The charitable group gets a
donation of 5% of the revenue of
the evenings sales.
We are in need of a chairperson for
this fund raiser. If you would like
to volunteer please contact Jerry
Golmanavich, past president.

Next luncheon Aug 7 at Westside Community Center

The Spring Life Member Luncheon
is now over and Judy has started
her plans for the Summer LML. She
said it was very well attended
again.
Judy has set the date already and
has it locked in for this summer and

it will be on Tuesday, August 7. We

will see you all in August.
She has also set the date for the
Christmas luncheon for December
11. So everyone go to your
calendars and circle those days so
you dont make other plans. See
you in August.

Donations
There always seems to be some
puzzlement regarding donations
and where to send them. If you
choose to send a donation to
Colorado, or Washington, or Kansas
City that is fine; however, one

should know that the Heartland

Council may not benefit from this
gesture. If you want to make sure
your donation is used here, please
send it to Heartland Council where
you can see where it went. Thanks!
