How the quest for it turned in to a great opportunity.
S
tyle trends are always disappearing and
then reappearing a couple of decades
or even just a single decade later. But
one particular trend that has come back
with surprising force, and also doesn’t seem
to be going away any time soon is the pres-
ence of a mighty beard.
Although it seems like a simple,
timeless choice, what men are experiencing
these days is not just how to wear the beard,
(as can be the most important question de-
pending on the era) now there’s a question
of how to maintain it. It’s more than just
trimming and the occasional comb through,
but how does one keep it luscious, shiny
and above all else, healthy?
Such was the question for Pete
Salazar, Fresno local and owner of Die-
hardz & Son. And it was more than simply
keeping his beard healthy, but in his own
words, how to make it “Epic!” Think of
the magnificent beards adorned by fearless
and decorated warriors of times long since
passed. Genetics undoubtedly play a big
part in all of this, naturally, but what other
things can a guy do to up his chances?
Salazar dove in to do some research
and came back with a solution, beard balms
and serums. But instead of purchasing pre-
made packages that were already available,
he decided to go one step further, thinking
to himself “I could mix my own.” And
that was that. Salazar looked deeply at the

their processes, and saw a possibility. “I just
bought the ingredients and started mixing.”

born from the pesky issues of having a dry,
itchy, brittle looking beard. Salazar had a
new opportunity.

Mother nature is warming up and your

t’s springtime. I have always loved
springtime. I love watching everything
burst to life. The things that laid
dormant over the winter months now get
their chance to shine. The hillsides are
green. The blossom trail prepares to dazzle
our eyes and noses. What could be better

springtime without allergies. For many of
us, all that bursting to life business creates

stroke of a brush, the paint lightly
coating the top of a canvas, or hands
molding clay from lifeless globs in to
tangible expressions… these are the images
that come to mind when we see or hear the
word ‘artistry’. But what about eggs? For Carol
Gavette, eggs are exactly the things that come
to mind when she thinks of creating her next
piece of art.
GW Eggceptional Eggs is what she
and her co-artist, Cindy, call their creations.
They take every sort of egg imaginable, from
chicken to turkey, quail, pigeon, emu, rhea and
occasionally even ostrich eggs as canvases and
turn them in to unique ornaments decorated
with scenes and detailed artwork. The primary
egg types they typically use however, is the
duck and goose eggs. But where would one
find something like an emu egg? Obviously,
this isn’t something that can be picked up at
any store. Many of the uncommon eggs are
purchased from private individuals who raise
the various types of birds. Carol gives insight to
where else they find the unique eggs, “We fre-
quently purchase from vendors at the Northern
California Egg Artists show held in Sacramen-

purchased from Metzger Farms in Gonzales,
Ca. We use professionally cleaned and sanitized
eggs from reputable vendors.”
The variety in sizes and densities help
determine the type of artwork they’ll be doing,
since some processes require more tools and
care than others. “There are so many ways to
decorate an egg. For example, we decorate the
outside of whole eggs with pictures printed
on silk, we create marbleized/ink eggs and we
create dioramas inside of cut eggs. Some eggs
are decorated with jewels, lace, ribbons, beads
– just whatever completes the look you want,”
Says Carol.
The process is appropriately called
‘Eggery’, and it was a love that Carol found
early on. “As a child I began my love of Faberge
eggs; but in 1965 my father, an interior decora-

tor, introduced me to the art of eggery. He had
a friend at work that showed him how to cut
an egg (with manicure scissors) and he came
home and showed me…I was hooked. Until
about 1995, I cut all of my eggs with manicure
scissors. I introduced my daughter-in law to
eggery in the mid 90’s and she and I have been
“doing eggs” ever since!” The process has since
evolved to include a high-speed drill for cutting
and carving; it’s common for eggers to use
dental drills and dremels.
One would think that decomposable
material such as an eggshell wouldn’t have a
very long life span after being turned in to a
piece of art, but Carol still has eggs she created
as far back as 1965. “We paint the eggs or
use the old familiar Mod Podge to coat the
egg either on the inside or outside and this
adds some strength to the eggs. Sometimes we
choose to add a gloss coating. However, like
a blown glass ornament, they are fragile.” But
with care, the eggs will hold very well for a
long time.
A fair number of the eggshell cre-
ations are designed to not only last, but also
to hang from Christmas trees, sit in hanging
stands or regular stands. But any of the eggs
can be customized by request. “If someone has
a small keepsake, the size of the item being
crucial, that they would like to have in an egg,
we are happy to develop a design to include
it. Likewise, if they have a theme that we can
incorporate in or on an egg, we will do our best
to accommodate.”
Most of the eggs are created for per-
sonal reasons, most of which are to be included
in Carol’s and Cindy’s own collection as holi-
day decorations. However, they often create the
eggs for birthdays, Christmas gifts and other
various special occasions. What’s more is that
they’ll even teach you the art of eggery if you’re
interested in learning the craft.
