INTERPRETING DATA

Diagram below shows an investigation carried out by Fiza. She puts

three different sizes of sponge in three containers. Each container contains
500 ml water.

After 15 minutes, she recorded the volume of water left in the

container. The result are shown in the table below.

What is the aim of the investigation?

_________________________________________________

b)

What is the trend of change in the volume of water left?

________________________________________________

c)

State the relationship between the size of sponge and the

volume of water absorb by the sponge.

ANSWER
Q1

What conclusion can you make based on the table

above?
_________________________________________________

a) To find out/ investigate/ study the relationship between the size of sponge and
the volume of water left.
b) Decrease
c) i. The bigger the size of sponge, the more volume of water absorb by the
sponge.
ii. If/ As the sizes of sponge increase, the volume of water absorb increases.

HYPOTHESIS
1. Amirul carried out an investigation. He records the time taken for an

ice cube to change into water in a glass filled with water at 20 C .He
repeats the investigation with different temperatures of water at 40
C , 60 C and 80 C . Below are the results of the investigation .
Temperature of
water
(C )
20
40
60
80

Time taken for the ice cube to

change into water ( min )
120
80
50
30

What hypothesis can you make based on the above table?

1. Answer :
a) As the temperature of water increases the time taken for the ice
cube to change into water decreases.
b) The more the temperature of water the less time taken for the
ice cube to change into water.

2. A group of pupils from Year 5 Arif carries out an investigation to

study the factor that effects the size of a shadow. They set up the
apparatus as shown in the diagram below. He places a ball of
distances of 60 cm , 40 cm , and 20 cm from the light source.

The height of the shadow is recorded as follows.

Distance of the
object from the
screen (cm )
Height of the
shadow
( cm )

What hypothesis can you make based on the table ?

Answer :
a) As the distance of the object from the screen increases the
height of the shadow decreases.
b) The more the distance of the object from the screen the less the
height of the shadow.

3. Zaida carries out an investigation on a series circuit . She turns on the

switch and observes the brightness of the bulbs.she repeats the steps

by having two bulbs in series in the circuit .Finally , she repeats the
steps by having only one bulb in the circuit .

These are Zaidas results :Number of bulb

Based on the table , state the relationship between them .

Answer
a) As the number of bulbs increases the brightness of the bulbs increases.
b) The more the number of bulbs the more brightness of the bulbs.
4. The graph shows the number of hamsters from March to July .

Based on the table , write one hypothesis .

Answer
As the month increases the number of hamster increases.
As the month passes by the number of hamster increases

5. Zulia uses an electronic balance to determine the mass of different

number of durians. The mass of the durians are recorded in the
following table.

Number of durians
Mass ( kg )

1
0.35

2
0.70

4
1.05

1.40

Based on the table above , write one hypothesis.

Answer :
As the number of durians increases the mass of the durians increases.

CONTROLLING VARIABLE
1

Farah carried out an investigation on two objects in two different position.

Objects P and Q are of the same size, shape and material.

Sarah blows towards both objects slowly.

It was found P fall faster than Q

Based on the investigation, state the following :

(a)

What to change ( Manipulated variable )

..

(b)

What to measure ( Responding variable )

.

(c)

What to keep the same ( Controlled variable )

.

Answer :
c) Area/Base of the objects
d) Time taken for the objects to fall / The sequence the models fell
e) Shape/Size/Height/Material of the objects

These are Amins results :

Using Amins results, state the following variables :

i.

What to changed ( Manipulated variable )

ii.

What to observe ( Responding variable )

.

iii.

Two variables to keep the same ( Controlled variable )

.

Answer :
i. Types of the objects
ii Time taken to absorbs
iii. - Initial volume of water

3. An experiment is carried to find out whether the height of an object affects

its stability.

Two wooden blocks are placed on a table. Then the table is shaken until both
wooden blocks fall down. The time taken for each wooden block to fall is
recorded in the table below.
