Procedure
Activity 1
Aims: - to check attendance
- to check homework ( Describe a photo that brings you nice memories)

the teacher greets the students and makes sure the conditions are proper to start the lesson

two or three students read their homework

Activity 2
Aim: - to allow students to listen for specific info

in order to perform the tasks from exercises 38 and 39/p.24, the teacher plays the CD

Aims: - to give students practice in reading both for gist and for detail

the teacher asks the students to try to predict the content of the text from the title: More
than a moment

students work in groups and decide where each sentence from a to g (ex.6/p.18) fits best
in the text

in pairs, students scan the text in order to find specific information about certain people

Aim: - to check comprehension of words from the text

after reading the text, students receive worksheets with words from the text and their
definitions and have to match the words to their definitions

Aim: - to enable students to express their opinions about racism

students have to express their opinions about Hazel Bryans actions as a 15-year-old and
as a 55-year-old and think of what they would have done
E.g.: What she did at 15 was ugly / racist. What she did at 55 was brave.
Maybe I would have had the same reaction.

the teacher shows the students a photograph of Nelson Mandela and asks them if they
know who the man in the photo is; students receive handouts with information about
Nelson Mandela and express their opinions about his actions

Nelson Mandela

born on 18th July 1918, in South Africa

a former freedom fighter who became the first president of South Africa
in the post-apartheid1 period

joined the ANC2 ( the African National Congress) in 1942

in the early 1960s, the ANC was made illegal

in 1962, Mandela left the country illegally; when he returned to South Africa
(after several months), he was arrested and charged with illegal exit from
the country; he was convicted and sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment

while serving his sentence, he was charged and found guilty of sabotage 3 and
was sentenced to life imprisonment

he spent 27 years in detention before he was released on 11 th February 1990

in 1993, he agreed to accept the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of all the
South Africans who suffered to bring peace to the nation

he was president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999

The political system that existed in the past in South Africa, in which only white people had political rights and
power;

A political party in South Africa that for many years fought against the system of apartheid; in 1994, the ANC
formed the first government in South Africa to be elected by both black and white people;
