Overview
Wouldn't you like to boast about the performance of your HPLC
column? Many Luna customers do. Our passion for manufacturing
the best HPLC columns, has resulted in Luna - one of the World's
most popular columns. Luna represents some of the highest quality
and performance standards in HPLC. Take a moment to explore
Luna, we are certain you will discover amazing HPLC column
performance like so many of our customers.

Incredible Silica Smoothness

Luna silica is very smooth and spherical, as illustrated in the Luna
versus Zorbax silica comparisons below. The likelihood of silica
particle shearing and breakage during bonding and packing is very
low; thus, Luna columns have high efficiencies and long column
lifetimes.

Superior Silica For Long Column Lifetimes

Silica quality is not simply the result of Luna's 99.999% purity.
Meticulous care is given to quality control over silica smoothness,
pore structure and pore consistency leading to a highly advanced
HPLC silica with:
Low percentage of "fines" from damaged silica
particles stabilizing the column bed and leading
to lower backpressures and enhanced column
performance and lifetimes
High column bed stability enhanced by
particle shape uniformity

pH Stability: 1.5 to 10.0*

Luna was one of the first columns to provide greater flexibility and
control in method development at pH extremes. More importantly,
Luna provides good peak shape independent of mobile phase pH.

Reproducibility Validated
A Materials Validation Document showing the test results for the
batch of material and the individual column accompanies each
Luna column. This data ensures column-to-column and batch-tobatch reproducibility.
Versatile Configurations
Capillary-LC to preparative/process chromatography columns and
bulk material are available to meet any separation need.

Reproducibility Validated
It is tough to meet Luna quality standards. The Tanaka plots below
illustrate the reproducibility of 13 different quality control parameters
for 9 batches of Luna material - nearly no variation is observed.
Each batch represents hours of quality control testing for over 25
different parameters. We know chromatographers rely on Luna for
rugged, reproducible methods worldwide; therefore, an extensive
Materials Validation Document (MVD) accompanying each column
confirms consistent column specifications and consistent
performance.

Reliable Performance
Almost no variation is observed among the batches of Luna. Figure
1 shows quality control test data designed to monitor the slightest
differences that may affect reproducibility - particle shape and
smoothness, porosimetry, bonding consistency and pH stability.
Figure 2 shows bonding reproducibility test data from 9 Luna
batches. Since differences in bonded phase coverage can show
selectivity changes, each Luna batch undergoes 6 tests for bonding
reproducibility.

LUNA C18(2) columns gave good column efficiency, excellent column symmetry,

and most importantly, superior

pH Stability: 1.5 - 10.0

Luna was one of the first columns to provide an extended pH range
of 1.5 to 10* for most of its phases (Figure 4). The broad pH stability
range is partly achieved by the density of the bonded phase. Luna
C18(2) columns are exhaustively bonded to show great peak shape
independent of pH, indicating free silanols are well shielded from
the analyte compounds (Figure 5). Try Luna! It will consistently
provide good peak asymmetry across a wide pH range.

Sharp Peaks For Basic Compounds at High pH

With Luna columns it is possible to work above the pKb of many
basic compounds, with the compound in a "neutral charge state",
thus the basic compound becomes more hydrophobic (less polar).
This can result in improved retention, peak shape, and
reproducibility. Figure 6 illustrates how a pH adjustment can be
used to alter selectivity and retention. A wide operational pH range
extending to 10.0 is useful for basic compounds.

We are finding your columns

very useful for the separation
Luna C18(2), C8(2), C5
Luna has found a place as one of the World's top reversed phase
columns because it ensures two important chromatographic
properties: resolution and peak shape. The high efficiencies and
bonded phase surface coverage provide for sharp peaks. Whether
you need a column for USP methods or just general method
development, Luna C18(2) and C8(2) should be your first choice
every time. The result:
Free exposed silanols virtually eliminated
by complete bonding and endcapping
Sharp peak shape for good method sensitivity
pH stable from 1.5 to 10.0 for over 10000 hours

Luna Phenyl-Hexyl
Engineered for Stability
The patented Luna Phenyl-Hexyl is a reproducible, extremely stable
phenyl phase. Most other phenyl phases use a short propyl (3
carbon) linker, which limits the phase stability. This patented phase
uses a hexyl (6 carbon) linker to attach the phenyl group to the
silica surface. The result:
Highly reproducible phenyl phase
Dual selectivity of both phenyl phase
and a short alkyl phase
(such as a C8)
Excellent retention of amine and polar
aromatic compounds
1.5 to 10 pH stability for over 6000 hours

Luna Cyano (CN)

Proven Reproducibility
Luna CN was developed to provide reproducibile chromatography
from run-to-run, column-to-column and batch-to-batch. Lunas
high-purity silica provides a ridged and dense column bed that
allows for improved CN bonding techniques to make a stable CN
phase. The result:
One of the most stable CN columns under both reversed
phase or normal phase conditions.
Reproducible from run-to-run, column-to-column,
batch-to-batch.
pH stable from 1.5 to 7.0

Luna seems very versatile

Luna Amino (NH2)
Developed for Ruggedness
Luna Amino was developed to provide improved amino column
lifetime. Column life for most amino columns can be problematic
as the amino bonding easily strips off the silica. Luna Amino,
however, shows good bonded phase stability under both normal
and reversed phase modes and across a pH range of 1.5 to 11.0.
Such a broad pH range indicates the bonded phase ruggedness
and the density of the bonded phase coverage. The result:
Long lifetimes and low phase bleed for more
reproducible methods
Excellent retention of simple sugars, complex
sugars, sugar alcohols by reverse phase conditions
and hydrogen bonding compounds under
normal phase conditions
pH stable from 1.5 to 11.0
Stable in 100% aqueous mobile phases

Both robust
LC/MS & Combinatorial Chemistry
Luna materials are highly recommended for LC/MS and highthroughput screening. Due to Lunas stability from pH 1.5 to 10, a
broad range of volatile, MS-compatible mobile phase modifiers
are available for LC/MS applications. High loading capacity is
possible due to high pore volume and optimum pore size distribution
of Luna silica. Our proprietary bonding procedure produces uniform
bonded phase coverage excellent for rapid mobile phase reequilibration. The result:
Sharp peak shape
High loading capacity
Low phase bleed
Rapid re-equilibration

& reliable

Luna has become the column of choice for our routine LC/MS service, typically
(Debra Manning, CPB Twyford, United Kingdom)
providing over 1400 analyses per week.
Capillary Columns
High Efficiency and High Sensitivity
Luna capillary columns have the same characteristics as their
respective analytical-size columns but provide added sensitivity
for microliter sample volumes. The incredible smoothness and
sphericity of Luna silica results in a high efficiency capillary-LC
column with a stable column bed that yield long column life. Our
high-purity silica combined with proprietary bonding techniques
produce a dense bonded phase shielding against silanol
interactions. With little secondary silanol interaction, Luna capillaryLC columns yield terrific peak shape, an essential criteria for mass
limited samples.
The result:
High efficiency 0.30, 0.50 and 0.70mm ID
glass-lined columns
Exceptional sensitivity for low volume and mass
limited samples
Consistent performance under LC/MS compatible
and universal gradient mobile phase conditions

Preparative LC
Less Material Required
Luna materials have extremely low particle densities meaning less
material is required to pack a given volume. For large-scale
preparative systems, such as production or process methods, this
can have an enormous impact on long-term operating costs. For
example, packing a 50L column would require up to 20% less Luna
media than the leading competitive media.

Exceptional Lifetimes
The extraordinary silica and bonding technology at the heart of
Luna provides exceptional lifetime. The rigid silica resists crushing,
improving the chromatographic performance over the life of the
column.

Quick, Direct Scale-Up

Luna preparative media can provide nearly the same
chromatographic behavior as a Luna analytical column. Method
scale-up is simple. Luna 3 C18(2) material used in the analytical
separation can be switched to Luna 15 C18(2) material to obtain
similar separation and resolution with minimal changes in the
separation method. Furthermore, the same smooth silica surface,
high bonded phase coverage and pH stability available in analytical
Luna materials is inherently present in all preparative Luna materials.

High Loadability
Luna packing materials provide high surface area silica with
optimized pore size and pore size distribution and a high pore
volume that allows extremely high loading capacity.

DESCRIPTION

APPLICATION

C5
Reversed-phase chemistry that offers greater hydrolytic stability
and an alternative selectivity over the classic C4 phase.
C8(2)
Optimized for maximum efficiency, peak shape and resolution.
Significantly improved performance over traditional C8 phases
due to high surface coverage. Slightly lower carbon load than
original Luna C8.
C8
Original C8 phase. Highly retentive; optimized for long lifetime at
extremely high pH levels (pH >10.0).
C18(2)
Optimized for maximum efficiency, excellent peak shape and
resolution; slightly lower carbon load than original Luna C18.

Highly hydrophobic compounds. Good alternative

to C8 or C18 when less retention is desired.

Great starting point for methods development of

pharmaceuticals, nucleotides and polar compounds.
Excellent for highly aqueous and LC/MS applications.

A workhorse for extremely high pH applications

(pH >10.0), or when a more retentive C8 is desired.

A C18 phase for virtually all HPLC applications.

Range of particle sizes offers amazing versatility for
capillary-LC/MS, to prep and process scale applications.

C18
Original LUNA C18 phase. Maximum retention, optimized for long
lifetime at extremely high pH levels (pH >10.0)

A workhorse for extremely high pH applications

(>10.0), or when maximum retention is desired.

Phenyl-Hexyl
Novel (patented) phenyl phase which employs a hexyl linker, as
opposed to the traditional propyl chain. Stable under all conditions
as well as alternative selectivity to most phenyl phases.

Unique selectivity for very polar and aromatic

compounds when used in methanol containing mobile
phases.

CN
One of the best performing CN phases available. Can be used in
reversed- or normal-phase modes. Based on same 99.999% pure
silica as all Luna phases.

Excellent for improving the retention of polar

compounds. Extremely rapid equilibration makes it
ideal for rapid screening and gradient applications.

NH2
Possibly the most rugged and reproducible NH2 phase for reversed
or normal phase separations. Stable from pH 1.5 to 11.0 and
under 100% aqueous conditions.

Excellent for reversed-phase analysis of sugars, sugar

alcohols and anionic compounds or for hydrogen
bonding compounds under normal phase.

10
or
10-PREP?

10 vs. 10-PREP:
What is the difference?
The Luna 10 and 10-PREP differ by only
one factor: Particle size distribution. The
silica matrix and bonding chemistry are
identical, but the 10-PREP has a wider
particle size distribution to reduce cost.
Which should I choose?
Luna 10-PREP offers exceptional
performance, suitable for most applications, with excellent economy. Luna 10
is available when the absolute best preparative performance is critical. Extremely
narrow size distribution yields the highest
efficiency and maximum resolution.
Evaluation is the Best Test
All Luna materials are available in scout
columns. Contact your Phenomenex
representative to set up an evaluation.

Guard Cartridge System

LUNA Method
Development Kits
The Luna Method Development Kits
combine the incredible performance of
Luna HPLC columns with three different
selectivities. Both kits include a Luna
Phenyl-Hexyl (moderate polarity), a Luna
CN (polar), and your choice of a C8(2) or
C18(2) (non-polar). A wide range of
selectivies for virtually any separation
challenge.

LUNA Validation Kits

Three columns of the same phase from
three different batches provide an excellent
benchmark for system validation. Method
reprodicibility is easily and quickly
assessed, clearly demonstrating
chromatographic performance, validation
potential and long term compliance with
Luna Method Validation Kits.
