ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

Dear Reader,

Index

ABRA News:
The Australia Day Breakfast this year was again very
successful with over 600 breakfasts given out for the second
year running.
As usual, the last hour 10 11am was far less attended with
only about 80 breakfasts given out between 10 10:30 when
supplies ran out.
It was an exceptional beach day and ramps were again closed
mid morning. It was reported they managed to fit four rows
of cars on the beach in some areas with the very low tide.
Our Tour Down Under has also been and gone and we must
congratulate our sister group Aldinga Bay Business And
Tourism Association (ABBTA) for their prowess in
organising the very successful Snapper Point section of that
event.
Planning is underway to host a Deadly Fun Run event in the
area. This is part of the nationally based Indigenous Marathon
organisation and caters for indigenous and non indigenous
people. It aims to improve fitness from couch sitter to a 5 km
run (or walk), with various events offered, following a
training programme, of 1 km 3 km and up to 5km and
beyond. Representatives from each location are then invited
to take part in a run at Uluru each year. Like the City Bay it
is proposed to be a family oriented event not just for elite
athletes.
Transport SA is seeking feedback on their plans for the Old
Coach Road to Malpas Road section of South Road. This
includes a roundabout at the Port Road & South Road
intersection with dedicated turning lanes, and a lane
separation fence between the roundabout and Malpas Road
adjacent to the overtaking lane. This barrier will eliminate
turning right into Little Road when travelling north toward
the city. Speed limits are also proposed to be reduced by
10kph in each section between here and Seaford Heights.
Im pleased to report that our committee has again been made
fully operational.
Fred Carrangis and Bernice Wuttke both volunteered at our
February general meeting and both were elected at that

healthy nine members.
Representation is still very unbalanced with the majority
of committee members being retirees. Some more young
blood is needed and we can have more than nine
members so If youve got the time and inclination to do
something for your community let us know.
ABOUT THIS ISSUE:
A drop in advertising revenue means we are back to 40
pages again this month but we hope there is still enough
variety to be worthwhile reading. Stan Back and his
computer are both feeling their age so we havent got his
usual From The Archives section this month. Peter
Evans is also having a break so we are missing his
spiritually uplifting section We hope to see them both
back next month.
I hope you enjoy the issue.

Media Release (ALDINGA AIRFIELD UPDATE)

Environment Protection Authority
11 February 2016
Licence restrictions for Aldinga aircraft movements
The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has issued
its first licence for an aerodrome in South Australia, to
necessitate regulating the impact of flight movements on
residents around Aldinga.
This follows a judgement in the Environment, Resources
and Development (ERD) Court that determined the
airfield operator, Aldinga Aviation Pty Ltd, had exceeded
the annual flight movement threshold of 20,000 and
dismissing an appeal against the EPA.
Executive Director Operations, Andrew Wood said the
judgement upheld the EPAs position based on this
threshold that a licence was necessary for the company to
manage the Aldinga Airfield which accommodates 70
aircraft including a flying school and a charter company.
The EPA has welcomed this finding that more than
20,000 movements per year by commercial or charter
aircraft involving take-off and landing constitutes a
prescribed activity of environmental significance within
the Environment Protection Act 1993, Mr Wood said.
The City of Onkaparinga first raised concerns with the
EPA in 2012 that operations at the Aldinga Airfield had
increased to a level that would require a licence.
While there has been no precedent for this action in
South Australia, the Environment Protection Act 1993,
offers the option to regulate aerodromes as a licensed
activity when the number of flights exceed an annual
20,000 movement threshold, Mr Wood said.
The EPA undertook an environmental noise study to
determine the overall contribution of aircraft flyovers in
the Aldinga area and conducted extensive consultation
with all relevant stakeholders to inform them of the
licence application process.
The licence imposed on Aldinga Aviation Pty Ltd
includes conditions to curb problematic noise disturbance
issues by restricting the flight movement hours to
between 7am to 9pm, and from 6am during periods of
daylight saving.
Aircraft landings will be permitted until 10pm.
Circuit flying will only be permitted between 8am and
8pm Monday to Saturday, and 9am to 8pm on Sunday
and prohibited on some public holidays.
Aldinga Aviation Pty Ltd must also develop an
Environmental Management Plan outlining measures that
will be undertaken to minimise noise nuisance impacts on
the local community, Mr Wood said.

Willungas Women in White

Join us in commemorating the significant work
of the women of the Willunga Cheer-Up Society during
World War I.
Our exhibition will highlight the activities and
practical work of these women in white from a
country sub-branch perspective, where food and
comforts were made and accumulated through
donation, knitting circles, and entrance fees to euchre
nights and dances. They were then forwarded to the
Adelaide-based Cheer-Up Hut.
Most of the Cheer-Up workers had family
members or friends away at the war and many are
represented on the collage presented to the Willunga
community. The collage has recently been revitalised
and will be the focus of the exhibition, which will also
include artefacts from World War I, such as the Dead
Mans Penny presented to the family of local man,
Frederick Farmer Bassett, who died during the conflict.
A book about the Willunga Cheer-Ups, the collage and
the soldiers on it will be available for sale.
Display open: Saturday 7 May, 10 4 pm;
Sunday 8 May, 11 4 pm;
Monday 9 May, 12 4 pm;
Tuesday 10 May, 12 4 pm.
Address: Willunga Show Hall, Main Road, Willunga.

The Stella Awards.
For those unfamiliar with these awards, they are named
after 81-year-old Stella Liebeck who spilled hot coffee on
herself and successfully sued McDonald's in New
Mexico, where she purchased coffee. You may recall
that she took the lid off the coffee and put it between her
knees while she was driving. Who would ever think one
could get burned doing that, right? That's right; these are
awards for the most outlandish lawsuits and verdicts in
the U.S. You know, the kinds of cases that makes you
scratch your head... So keep your head scratcher handy.
Kathleen Robertson of Austin, Texas was awarded
$80,000 by a jury of her peers after breaking her ankle
tripping over a toddler who was running inside a furniture
store. The store owners were understandably surprised by
the verdict, considering the running toddler was her own
Carl Truman, 19, of Los Angeles, California won $74,000
plus medical expenses when his neighbour ran over his
hand with a Honda Accord. Truman apparently didn't
notice there was someone at the wheel of the car when he
was trying to steal his neighbours hubcaps.
Terrence Dickson, of Bristol, Pennsylvania, who was
leaving a house he had just burgled by way of the garage.
Unfortunately for Dickson, the automatic garage door
opener malfunctioned and he could not get the garage
door to open. (to p 19)

CEMETERY HUMOUR
On the outskirts of a small town, there was a big, old
pecan tree just inside the cemetery fence. One day, two
boys filled up a bucketful of nuts and sat down by the
tree, out of sight, and began dividing the nuts.
'One for you, one for me, one for you, one for me,' said
one boy. Several dropped and rolled down toward the
fence.
Another boy came riding along the road on his bicycle.
As he passed, he thought he heard voices from inside the
cemetery. He slowed down to investigate. Sure enough,
he heard, 'One for you, one for me, one for you, one for
me...'

He just knew what it was. He jumped back on his bike

and rode off. Just around the bend he met an old man with
a cane, hobbling along.
'Come here quick,' said the boy, 'you won't believe what I
heard! Satan and the Lord are down at the cemetery
dividing up the souls!'
The man said, 'Beat it kid, can't you see it's hard for me to
walk.' When the boy insisted though, the man hobbled
slowly to the cemetery.
Standing by the fence they heard, 'One for you, one for
me. One for you, One for me.'
The old man whispered, 'Boy, you've been tellin' me the
truth. Let's see if we can see the Lord
Shaking with fear, they peered through the fence, yet
were still unable to see anything. The old man and the
boy gripped the wrought iron bars of the fence tighter and
tighter as they tried to get a glimpse of the Lord.

National Trust Book Sale Returns to Willunga

The fabulous Willunga National Trust Book Sale has
returned to Willunga. Thousands of high quality books and
magazines have been donated in a fantastic response to the
Willunga National Trust Book Appeal. According to Mark
Staniforth, the Manager of the Book Sale, People have the
opportunity here to buy printed books at ebooks prices. We
are operating for one day only, and people can buy as many
books and magazines as they like.
Are printed books better than ebooks Definitely! argues
Mark Printed books give you tactile enjoyment, and it is
much easier to follow a complex plot. You also understand
and remember more. Although ebooks have the advantage
of virtual storage, reading from screens before bed can
disrupt your sleep. Most of the books are $1 or $2, a
bargain in anyones terms. Buying printed books at these
prices means you can read them and then pass them on
without a qualm, so the storage problem is solved.
The National Trust Book Sale is on at the Show Hall, Main
Road Willunga on March 19, from 8am to 4pm.
Enquiries: 0412347280

At last they heard, 'One for you, one

for me. That's all.. Now let's go get
those nuts by the fence and we'll be
done....
They say the old man had the lead
for a good half-mile before the kid
on the bike passed him.

Josh and his grandson.
Old Josh was sat in his garden, sunbathing in the deck chair when he noticed his grand-son kneeling on the lawn with a
worm. When he asked his grandson what he was doing, he found that he was trying to push the worm down the hole
from which it came.
"If you can get that worm back in that hole I'll give you ten dollars," said Josh.
His grandson sat and thought for a moment, then rushed into the house. A few minutes later he returned with his
mother's hair spray. He picked up the worm by one end and, as he let it hang down, he sprayed it all over with the hair
spray. The spray set and the worm became stiff and hard. It was now easy to push the worm back in the hole. Josh was
amazed. He gave the boy ten dollars, picked up the hair spray and went indoors.
About an hour later Josh came back into the garden and gave his grand-son another ten dollars.
"But grandpa," said the boy, "you've already given me the ten dollars you promised."
"That's from your grandma," said Josh.

Forced to sit for eight days and survive on a case of Pepsi

Amazingly, the jury said the insurance company must pay

as much as he asked for because the jury believed the
beagle might have been provoked at the time of the butt
bite because Williams had climbed over the fence into the
yard and repeatedly shot the dog with a pellet gun.

Amber Carson of Lancaster, Pennsylvania gets third place

because a jury ordered a Philadelphia restaurant to pay
her $113,500 after she slipped on a spilled soft drink and
broke her tailbone. The reason the soft drink was on the
floor: Ms. Carson had thrown it at her boyfriend 30
seconds earlier during an argument.

Kara Walton, of Claymont, Delaware sued the owner of a

night club in a nearby city because she fell from the
bathroom window to the floor, knocking out her two front
teeth. Even though Ms. Walton was trying to sneak
through the ladies room window to avoid paying the
$3.50 cover charge, the jury said the night club had to pay
her $12,000... oh, yeah, plus dental expenses. Go figure.
FIRST PLACE - absolutely brilliant!
This year's runaway First Place Stella Award winner was:
Mrs. Merv Grazinski, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, who
purchased new 32-foot Winnebago motor home.
On her first trip home, from an OU football game, having
driven on to the freeway, she set the cruise control at 70
mph and calmly left the driver's seat to go to the back of
the Winnebago to make herself sandwich.
Not surprisingly, the motor home left the freeway,
crashed and over turned. Also not surprisingly, Mrs.
Grazinski sued Winnebago for not putting in the owner's
manual that she couldn't actually leave the driver's seat
while the cruise control was set.
The Oklahoma jury awarded her, (ARE YOU SITTING
DOWN ? ) $1,750,000 PLUS a new motor home.
Winnebago actually changed their manuals as a result of
this suit, just in case Mrs. Grazinski has any relatives who
might also buy a motor home.

verified - Ed.)

Talking Health
with Kelly Harding ND
Kids Health / Back to School
Breathing a sigh of relief now that school holidays
are over and the kids are back at school again? To
ensure your kids Are breathing easy as well, protect
them from colds and flus this school year.
At school and childcare, kids are exposed to a host
of bacteria and viruses and are often susceptible to
infections. The start of the school year is the perfect
time to boost your childs immunity, so that they
stay strong and healthy throughout the year and
dont fall victim to frequent infections. A strong
immunity also helps set the stage for good health in
adult life.
Over 70% of our immune system lives in the gut.
Therefore having high levels of good bacteria in the
digestive system is essential for building strong
immune systems in growing children. The beneficial
balance can be upset by many factors, including
antibiotics, high sugar diets and stress. This can lead
to increased risk of colds and flus. Probiotics are a
group of beneficial bacteria that can be given to your
kids as a supplement to aid in the development and
maintenance of healthy digestive and immune
function.
As well as Probiotics, Andrographis can be used to
stimulate the immune system. Vitamin C increases
the activity of infection fighting white blood cells
and reduces the incidence of colds. While Zinc is
crucial for the normal development of white blood
cells, the bodys main defence against infection.
To support the immune system, these diet and
lifestyle tips may help: Ensure your child eats lots
of vegetables and fruit every day. Ensure the child
eats protein rich foods in each meal or snack. Ensure
your child drinks plenty of water daily. Reduce
sugary foods and sweats, as these can suppress
optimal immune function. Avoid or severely limit
processed foods, additives and artificial flavours.
Ensure your child has adequate sleep and rest and
lastly encourage regular exercise.
Come in and see Kelly Harding with your child
today! She can help keep your child healthy this
year. Healthy kids are happier and behave better,
need less time off school and cause less disruption to
the smooth running of family life.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor Kevin,
The following quote from a splendid history of the
Ottoman empire Im reading, has a present day ring about
it. Nothings new!
By the mid - 17th century with widespread unrest in
the empire, the Ottomans were driven to extraordinary
levies to bridge the gap, many of which, having been
tried once, became permanent burdens on the people

Siegfried Rocznik emigrated to Australia in 1970 with
his family, wife Valeria, and two daughters Angelika and
Manuela to Aldinga Beach and bought land to built a
house by hand which took him a year.
He was a survivor in all trades he was well known by
the council and in the community and keen to take up
new challenges He had strong believes in the law and
rules he was a fighter Later in his life a new challenge

came to him her name was Christa and so he lived a life

with her.
My dad SIEGFRIED ROCZNIK has taught me lots of
good things in life which I keep with me always he was

Dear Editor,
I love reading your Coastal Views, but felt that I must
pick you up on a small item on page 28, the Seniors
Exam. (February issue) I worked at Metro meat for 15
years in the Offal Department & for around 4 of those
years I was in the BEEF runner room, where we were the
first step in the manufacture of cat gut.
The sheep runners were used for sausage skins & the
bung end was used for the bung Fritz.
Pig runners were too brittle to be run off & had to be cut
off by hand & were used for frankfurts & saveloys at that
time. Do not know about horses.
We also sent some small lamb bung ends to New
Zealand to be made into frangers!

Everyone at Aldinga Beach C.F.S would like

to thank everyone in our community that helped
us over December and January with our fundraising
raffle.
Our raffle prizes were very popular with many people
hoping to win. On January the 23rd we drew our raffle
and contacted all the winners, they were all very happy to
have won.
1st
- Jason Preo, Aldinga Beach. Wheelbarrow filled
with beverages
2nd - Kerry Carr, Sellicks Beach. Blue esky filled with
beverages
3rd
- Kathy White, Prospect. Cricket esky filled with
beverages
4th
- Beth, Aldinga Beach. Local wine
5th
- M. Costin, Sellicks Beach. Local Wine
6th
- John, Port Willunga. Local Wine
Well done to all the winners.
Prizes were delivered on Sat the 23rd by crew members on
1 of our fire appliances. Much excitement when we
pulled up to deliver.
Due to the overwhelming success of our raffle we were
able to raise enough funds to purchase the Lukas Pedal
Cutter. The Lukas pedal cutter are a smaller version of
our main cutters, being smaller they will get into tighter
places to cut foot pedals and steering wheels in the event
of an accident. They will be a valuable piece of equipment on our rescue appliance. We had the pedal cutter
delivered to our station during February and our rescue
crew have familiarized themselves with this new tool.
It is with our communities help that we are able to help
our community in time of need.

I used to work in technical support for a

24/7 call centre. One day I got a call
from an individual who asked what
hours the call centre was open.
I told him, "The number you dialled is

He responded, "Is that Eastern or Pacific

English is a crazy language!

If teachers taught, why didn't
preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats
vegetables, what does a humanitarian
eat? (See pic p9 - Ed)
In what language do people recite at a
play and play at a recital?
Ship by truck and send cargo by ship?
Have noses that run and feet that
smell?
How can a slim chance and a fat
chance be the same, while a wise man
and a wise guy are opposites?
You have to marvel at the unique
lunacy of a language in which your
house can burn up as it burns down, in
which you fill in a form by filling it
out and in which, an alarm goes off by
going on.
