Around Hicksville

Dear Buffalo Bob,

The HHS alumni foundation is sponsoring a fund raising concert on April 15th and I want to give a
portion of the proceeds to the Hicksville Vietnam war era memorial project. Furthermore, I want to
offer an opportunity to a committee member to set up a display at the concert. There will be a donation
box for concert attendees to deposit cash before and/or after the concert is finished. Please ask Bill
walden to get in touch with me. My cell phone number is 9177507842 sincerely John Maniec

JohnSorry I missed your phone call. Me and my walker went shopping. Bill Walden said he would be
attending the event and was bringing the finished mounting plaque with himBob
Thanks BobI actually stopped by the Hicksville VFW hall early this evening and was able to speak
with Bill. We are making every effort to provide financial support the very worthy project Memorial
project. I also outlined my goal to create a permanent honoring of all Hicksville HS graduates who ever
served in the U.S. Armed Forces with attractive display cases placed directly opposite the main office of
the high school where currently there are unused student lockers. I want to have the names of everyone
who served by the class year. Also to place photos and short biographical descriptions of all who paid
the ultimate price in defense of our nation. Thanks once again for all you regularly do for Hicksville and
its alumnisincerelyJohn

Spoke with John Maniec last night. Great conversation. I will be at the April fundraiser with the plaque.
We also discussed the idea of putting the name plaques in the High School rather than over at the Jr.
High with the main plaque. There is a whole new feeling in the Hicksville School system now that Dr.
Bonuso and HS Principal Williams are in charge. Discussion to followBill Walden
Bob- Sadly, I wont be able to go on the 15th to the Alumni concert. I have a temple service to play out
in Stony Brook. I'll be glad to make a donation . Just tell me who to make the check out to and where to
send it. thanks for all you doSteve Goldstein 1966
Thanks for your offer to contribute to a worthy project. If you've never seen this group perform,
go to http://drksmotownrevue.com/ and enjoy.
Donation checks should be made out to:

Congrats on another fantastic newsletter. Thank you for putting the Vietnam War
Memorial front and center for donations. Many may have just forgotten or ignored tiny articles but now
it is front and center so hopefully the donations will pour in. Great job as always. Thank you so much

PARKER OUSTANDING IN OLYMPIC QUALIFER

Last week, Tim Parker said it would be an honour to help lead the U.S. back to the Olympics.
Well, hes off to a good start. Making his first international appearance in over five years,
Parker played the full 90 minutes as the U.S. earned a 1-1 road draw against Colombia
on Friday in the first leg of this Olympic qualifying playoff setting up the
decisive second leg on Tuesday in Frisco, Texas.

Military News

Bob,
I'm not quite sure how to start this email, much less what to include. Suffice it to say that your attached
document referencing Viet Nam Veterans was like a knife to my heart....I know, that sounds rather
dramatic, but it's true..
It's amazing that at age 68 (HHS class of '65) I have been experiencing many of those "disorders"
mentioned in the attachment including PTSD, anxiety disorder, insomnia and so on.....I have been
receiving excellent care at the VA Hicksville Vet Center on South Broadway and in the Northport VA for
the last several years. The Social Workers at the VA are second to none.....give me an hour and I can tell
you some wonderful things about those folks.
I wrote some prose that I've been hesitant to show except to two or three Vets at the Hicksville
Center.....let's say that confidence in my ability to get some very personal thoughts down on paper is
severely lacking, but it is from the heart.
Briefly I, like so many others was drafted Nov. 1966 and went to Viet Nam Oct. 1967. I was assigned to

the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. I was wounded May 8, 1968 and evacuated to St. Albans Naval
Hospital in Queens. The impact on my family was immeasurable. The impact on me personally, wasn't
yet known.
I think that I've said enough - I wrote the attached during a particularity tough period....it seems as one
gets older these personal issues are somewhat magnified.
The email address used to send you this email is used for commenting on blogs, etc., thus offering me
some privacy. It is not the address used daily, nor is it the address used to subscribe to HixNews.
I'm a retired Nassau County Police Offer, married to a Hicksville girl for 45 years and father of five
great kids....and I still live in Hicksville.
Warm regards,
Anonymous
PS: Bob, thank you for your service to this great country. Great picture!

Carrying the PTSD Baggage of Viet Nam

We responded when they called and we carried our baggage to basic
We went home on leave carrying our baggage and then......carried our baggage over there....
Most of us survived even though we carried the baggage of hatred from so many at home
Wherever we went we carried the baggage of silence and anonymity never to speak of the baggage
thrust upon us by the countless enemies of our souls
Seldom tolerated when addressing the quiet pain of carrying the ever increasing weight of that
baggage we never sought to carry - depression, isolation, flashbacks, guilt, lost

relationships....dangerously dark thoughts brought to us by the death and destruction imparted on our
enemies and in return......on us
The baggage of self-destruction is mostly unseen but not yet gone
Eventually, we met our advocates at the VA......over time they courageously helped us decrease the
weight of our oppressive baggage
We began to stand up straight, unbent to the revulsion, distrust and emotional pain felt for so many years
Our baggage is somewhat lighter....we no longer remain in the shadows
The sun is beginning to shine.....God watches over us as we begin the long-elusive
journey to peace and happiness, but then....predictably we stumble as the relentless weight of PTSD
resumes its place on our shoulders.....
please stop..........please. Need to sleep......exhausted.......stop crying......breathe
This face that at times smiles is but a mask to hide the perpetual pain and sadness born
while...........Carrying the PTSD Baggage of Viet Nam

Showing the below story again because there is an update following at the
end
February 19, 1945, the 1st, 2nd & 3rd Marine Corps Divisions landed on the shores of Iwo Jima, an

integral battle during WWII. Almost 100 years prior to this event, they landed on the shores of
Tripoli fighting Muslim Pirates...

Dear EditorsAnother great edition of the Hix News. Thank you for the "shout out" regarding the 71st
anniversary (Feb. 19, 1945) of the U.S. Marine landing on Iwo Jima. There is just one minor correction
to be made, as many know we Marines are fanatical when it comes to our history.
The actual invasion of Iwo Jima was done by the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Marine Divisions not the 1st, 2nd, and
3rd. On Feb.19 elements of the 4th and 5th Divisions landed on Iwo Jima while the 3rd was held off
shore in reserve. It was rumored that the 3rd would be the spearhead in the upcoming invasion of
Japan. By nightfall of the 19th, the Marines of the 4th and 5th Divisions had suffered over 2,300
casualties. Within a week, elements of the 3rd Division were landed on Iwo to replace the massive
amount of Marine casualties. The island was finally declared secure on March 16. Except for a few
surrenders, the 21,000 man Japan garrison were all killed. The Marines suffered almost 6,000 killed and
as many as 20,000 wounded. It was the first time in the Pacific campaign that the Japanese inflicted
more casualties on an American invasion force than they had taken.
I've attached two of the many pictures that my father had.

The first picture is with Mount Suribachi in the distance and the secured airfield on the upper right. The
second picture is of my fathers rifle squad with a captured Japanese flag. My father is the second
Marine from the right. Again, thank you all for your hard work in putting the newsletter together.
