Taking teaching to the next level

Megan Gaebel embraces leadership academy, plans ahead for success of students
BY LIZ VOS
Staff Writer

ALBANY As Megan Gaebels second

graders at Holy Family School wrapped up a
recent math lesson, she asked them to show her
their level of understanding. The students each
placed one hand to their chest and held up 1, 2, 3,
or 4 fingers. The signal was only visible to their
teacher, who was then able to gauge where her
students were at with understanding the lesson.
The approach is part of a new practice
Gaebel is taking part in called the Leading
Forward Leadership Academy, which she has
been involved with over the past two years. The
program utilizes a transforming education plan
developed by Dr. Robert Marzano.
This is changing how I teach, Gaebel
explained of the program. Every day is different
in the classroom and learning new skills like this
is part of what I love about teaching.
Gaebel has been teaching at Holy Family
School for seven years. Her passion for making
a difference and embracing the ever-changing
education system are apparent through her
willingness to take on the leadership academy and
pass the knowledge along to fellow educators.
Gaebel is taking part in the program with HFS
principal, Bonnie Massmann.
The initial first steps with the program are
to develop a common professional vocabulary
for the Marzano instructional program, to have
students begin using self-assessment scales and to
focus instruction on specific educational goals,
explained Massmann. The next steps will be to
use lesson design strategies that will raise the level
of rigor. Increases in rigor will involve students

using higher-level thinking skills and making use

of basic skills to solve real-world problems.
Massmann added that along with in-house
training, all teachers at HFS will be attending
a day of training this October provided by
the Marzano Center; training is being done
at Resource Training & Solutions in Sartell.
Both Gaebel and Massmann will attend three
additional days of training. Training will continue
over the next several years and teachers will be
participating in visits to schools designated as
Marzano demonstration schools.
The program is very data driven, explained
Gaebel of Marzanos academy. There is a lot to
learn and it will take time, but it gives teachers
and students a clear look at what should be learned
and how to reach the goals.
Gaebel points out that the use of rubrics and
proficiency scales in the program at first made her
skeptical.
I wondered if this could be just another new
teaching method, but once I started learning about
it, I was pleasantly surprised at how effective this
can be, she said.
So far, Gaebel has learned how to incorporate
the posting of goals with many of her lessons. If
the math lesson goal is to measure inches and feet,
that goal is posted on the wall for both Gaebel and
her students to see. As they progress through the
lesson, she asks them to refer to the other posting
of fingers to rate their level of understanding.
It helps us all keep the goal in mind and I can
see how their understanding of the lesson grows,
Gaebel said. The more we use it, the more we
will see the benefits.
The introduction to the Marzano Academy
came after Dr. Marzano served as the keynote

speaker at a conference a few years ago. It

was there that the Superintendent of Catholic
Schools for the St. Cloud Diocese, Linda Kaiser,
recognized a positive path for schools in the
district to follow.
Dr. Marzano is looked upon as a great leader
among educators, Kaiser noted. I see this
program as a way to help teachers teach better and
students to learn better. We want students to take

will retire this year after serving the district since 1986.

As she walks the halls of Holdingford

Elementary School, Therese Casek points to
the plethora of unique art pieces created by her
students this school year. Egyptian mummies,
Picasso-style clay plates, elaborate masks
depicting animals and imagined creatures and
bright paintings of birds in trees hang along the
hallways leading to the art room she has called

home since 1996 when the school was built.

Since she began teaching for the district in
1986, Casek has made an impact on her students,
pressing them to attempt rich and fulfilling
projects by combining their imagination with
techniques and a multitude of artistic mediums.
Its hard to explain the impact art makes on
students. I always felt that if I was excited about a
project, they would be too, she said. I have just
always been excited about what I do. It has been
an interesting career.
After impacting countless students in
Holdingford through art education since 1986,
Casek will retire from teaching at the end of this
school year.
I am ready, she said as she looked around
her classroom at the bright colors and stunning
textures filling the space. Its time to move ahead
and on to more adventure.
Caseks impact at Holdingford, she hopes, is
carried out through her students. With a belief that
knowledge changes people and the world, she has
made a point to give her students everything she
can to help them change, grow and find creativity
everywhere.
I genuinely believe that you change with
knowledge. I am not the same teacher I was in
1986; I am a better teacher now because of what I
have learned, she said.
Aside from the lessons Casek has passed on
to her students, the impact of her teachings can
be seen on her classroom walls, the schools
hallways, the outdoor playground and in the
solarium, where special art projects implemented

The solarium frieze project was done in 1991
and was the first time Casek introduced the district

School: Albany High School

Hometown: Eden Valley, MN
College attended: St. Cloud State
University for my undergraduate
degree and Southwest Minnesota
State University for my masters
Years as a teacher: 8 years
What do you teach? High school
english, speech and yearbook
What made you decide to pursue a career in education? I had a wonderful high
school experience at Eden Valley-Watkins. A very special English teacher inspired me
to join the speech team, taught me to love literature and - yes, love writing too! I will
forever be indebted to her for believing in me and helping me realize my calling.
What are some of the challenges you face? The most challenging part of teaching is
not having enough time in any given day to do all that youd like to help students. There
are always stacks of books to read - either potential student interest books, or teaching
strategy books to help me be a more effective teacher. Its important to always stay on
the cutting edge of the profession.

A visual reminder hangs on the wall of Megan Gaebels second grade classroom
to help students reflect on their level of understanding during their lessons. Over
the course of lessons, Gaebel asks her students to represent their understanding
with a number.

What do you enjoy most about teaching? The students. Even when teaching gets
hard - and some days it is downright tough - the kids make it all worth it. Its the spark of
understanding that lights behind their eyes. Its the student who blossoms into a leader.
Its that moment of pure creativity that allows a student to show their true potential. Just
thinking about those moments gives me goosebumps.

ownership in their education and this program puts a focus on that.

Kaiser commends both Gaebel and Massmann for taking on the
leadership role for Holy Family School as the program is learned and
implemented.
Their involvement and the willingness of the rest of the teaching
staff proves that we have quality teachers who want to improve and help
their students, Kaiser said.
Massmann agrees that the schools involvement in the program is an
effort for improvement and long-term progress.
This training is an investment in our educational program and in
student achievement at the current time and into the future, she said. We
are training teachers with research-based teaching strategies, working
cooperatively with other area Catholic schools, and looking to help
secure the long-range availability of Catholic education for Albany and
surrounding communities.

What is your most memorable experience as a teacher? My most memorable

moment happened last year. My amazing students in the yearbook classroom took up a
collection and secretly bought me a beautiful bouquet of flowers with a very kind note. I
still keep that note on my fridge at home. Its a wonderful reminder of how fabulous our
Albany kids are and reaffirms my reason for coming to work every day.
What advice would you give to parents of school-aged children? Encourage your
children to be children. Yes, college and work are important, but help them prioritize
and dont forget about fun. Also, help them to self-regulate. Studies show that selfregulation is a higher predictor of success than intelligence. So, help them put the
phone away when they are around others. The notifications from social media can wait.
How do you spend your summer? I always spend my summers learning, sometimes
formally and sometimes informally. I read. A LOT. I also love riding motorcycles,
renovating houses (yes, I have my own toolbelt), gardening and camping. And, did I
mention reading?

School: Avon Elementary

Hometown: Greenwald, MN
College attended: Southwest Minnesota

Years as a teacher: Just coming to the
end of my first year!

What do you teach? Grade One

What made you decide to pursue a career in education? It
was a family occupation. My two aunts were teachers. I have
a sister and brother who are teachers and I also had an amazing
librarian in 7th grade that also encouraged me.
What are some of the challenges you face? Fitting everything into the day! There are
so many opportunities for going beyond the lessons each day.
What do you enjoy most about teaching? Just chatting with the students. I enjoy
getting to know them and their families.
What is your most memorable experience as a teacher? When the students read to
the residents at Mercy Manor. You can see the joy from both sides.
What advice would you give to parents of school-aged children? READ, READ, READ!
How do you spend your summer? I garden with my family and watch my son play
baseball.

What do you teach? Elementary music

What made you decide to pursue a career in education?
During college, my choir professor couldnt make it into rehearsal
one night because of inclement weather. She emailed me and asked me to run the
rehearsal. I didnt have time to think maybe someone else should be in charge of this - I
just got up in front of class and directed the rehearsal. Afterward, I realized how much I
enjoyed it, along with how many of my choristers had appreciated it, and that was the
first step in my joining the education field.
What are some of the challenges you face? Most of the challenges that I face just have
to do with learning the ropes, and knowing that the hiccups and challenges I have today
will help me to be a better teacher tomorrow. Luckily, I am surrounded by an extremely
supportive staff and students!
What do you enjoy most about teaching? I enjoy being able to pass my love of music
and all its facets on to my students. The best part of my job is seeing how proud and
joyful they are when they have the chance to give that music to people in the community
or their family and friends. Music is such a gift!
What is your most memorable experience as a teacher? There are so many instances
that have been memorable this year; I would have to say a highlight was bringing the 4th
graders to sing at Mother of Mercy in Albany. They were such good representatives of
our school, and both the kids and the residents at Mother of Mercy left smiling that day!
Also, being able to work with the High School Drama Club this year was a memorable
experience unto itself! What wonderful, dedicated students we have!

Thank you
for all
you do!

How do you spend your summer? I spend my summers running, collecting and
analyzing folk songs, catching up with friends and family, and cheering my heart out at
my brothers and sisters baseball games!

What made you decide to pursue a career in education? I

have known ever since I was 5 years old and played school with
my chalkboard that I wanted to be a teacher. I did not have a
fantastic middle school experience, so I empathize with this age group, and for that
reason I strive to be a teacher that students can come to and I can be a positive role
model for.
What are some of the challenges you face? I try every day to meet the needs of each
student - and that can be very difficult. Every student is different in how they best learn
and trying to come up with challenging, creative, fun lessons to meet all of the students
can be a challenge.
What do you enjoy most about teaching? My favorite part of teaching is when I can
make real-world connections to school work. When students can come into class and
we have conversations about lessons and how they just saw that in the news - it just
makes teaching that much more fun!
What is your most memorable experience as a teacher? I just had a previous student
come up to me at Padua Pub and say that he could still remember the French Revolution
rap that I had played for them in school - he says he will never forget it!
What advice would you give to parents of school-aged children? For middle schoolaged kids, it is all about communication and patience! Keep talking to them. Even if you
do not think they are listening - they are. They still want their parents to show them that
they care about them - although it may not seem like it all the time!
How do you spend your summer? With my family. We love to be at a lake - fishing,
swimming or agate hunting. I try to read as much as I can. This year I am training for
Grandmas Half-Marathon - so I will be running the Wobegon Trail quite a bit.

What made you decide to pursue a career in education? I

decided to become a full-time educator during my time with the
Minnesota Reading Corps in Sauk Centre. When you see students
working hard toward their goals and making tremendous
growth, you really feel like youre making a difference in their lives. I feel very fortunate
that I have the opportunity to work with students as they work toward their dreams.
What are some of the challenges you face? The biggest challenge I face is having
enough time in the day. Theres always more that you want to do and share with your
students, but each day seems to go by extremely fast.
What do you enjoy most about teaching? I love the interactions with staff and students.
I have had the opportunity to work with a lot of outstanding teachers, paraprofessionals
and administrators that make this a fun and rewarding job. I also love the energy and
excitement the students bring to the classroom and those magical moments when you
see them master something new.
What is your most memorable experience as a teacher? When I was a student teacher,
there was a career day at our school where the students dressed up as grown-ups with
their dream job. One of my second grade students wore a suit and tie. When asked what
he was, the student said, Im Mr. Olson....only as a doctor. Ill never forget that!
What advice would you give to parents of school-aged children?
Have high expectations for your children.
Try to read together every day for 10-15 minutes.
Get involved in school activities.
Work as a team with your childs teacher and school to help them get what they need
to be successful.
Stay positive and think about the big picture. Some things are challenging to learn,
but they can be accomplished over time with hard work and determination.
How do you spend your summer? I spend a lot of time with my family and friends. We
travel to the North Shore, hang out at the cabin and visit my parents in the Twin Cities. I
also coach youth tennis, volunteer and get ready for the upcoming school year.

plaster.
This project gives kids the knowledge that they can change their
environment. That they can control it, she said. People coming into our
school should be able to look up at the frieze and say, yeah, kids live here.
This is what kids are about.
It was a long process but the journey was well worth it. The 15 plaster
castings still remain in the solarium where they were placed nearly 24
years ago. As she looks around at each of the forms, Casek points out how
appreciative she is to the district and the community for allowing her to
leave such heavy artistic imprints in and around the building.
I feel a lot of gratitude that I was given permission to be creative in
this space, she said.
Another project led by Casek can be found outside, where elementary
school students play daily on the schools elaborate playground.
Welcoming children for free play at the entrance of the space are columns
mounted with colorful ceramic glazed tiles created by Caseks students.
The tiles commemorate the contributions of hundreds of individuals in the
community who worked together to make the playground a reality from
1994-1997.
Casek points out that while art education is exciting and intriguing, it
has always been important to make a point of reconnecting with students
to assure they are following the teachings hidden in the paint and clay. Its
one of the many lessons she has picked up along the way.
Its not always the case that they are following you, she said of her
students. You need to double back and reengage them often.
In an effort to continually engage her students and support their interest

What is your most memorable experience as a teacher? Each day brings something

What advice would you give to parents of school-aged children? Always remember
that you are your childs number one teacher! Together we can provide opportunities for

in art experimentation, Casek also will leave behind the legacy of the Art
Club, which she started in her early years of teaching at Holdingford.
It originally started because I needed help with displaying artwork in
the school, she explained. But soon it grew into a free-form opportunity
for students to be creative. They come in with an idea of something they
want to create and I am here to help them.
Art Club, hallways full of unique art pieces created by the students
and lifelong lessons of learning and creativity will soon be part of Caseks
past as she hands the arts education leadership role on to a new generation.
While some things will remain the same, Casek hopes change will be a part
of the transition.
Its not about me and what I have done. It is about art and it is about
students, she said with a smile. Change is part of what we do and I am
confident in the changes that will take place when I move on.

Therese Casek stands with her Art Club students who utilize the club to
experiment with artistic mediums with the help of their teacher. Casek began
the club early in her career in Holdingford.

MELROSE ELEMENTARY

Teaching kindergartners rewarding for Schneider

Retiring after 38 years in the Melrose School District
BY HERMAN LENSING
Staff Writer

MELROSE - Marlene (Molly) Schneider

is not counting down the days to the end of the
school year.
She is focusing on what she needs to do to
teach her 24 kindergarten students.
Its the same approach she has taken for the
past 28 years as a kindergarten teacher. Before
that, she taught 10 years as a Title I teacher in
parochial schools at St. Marys in Melrose and
St. Johns-St. Andrews in Meire Grove and
Greenwald.
Im glad I started teaching in Title I. It gave
me insight as to how to help kids that struggle. I
was more in-tune to those who needed help and
how to help them.
Schneider, who is retiring at the end of this
school year, has taught all 38 years in the Melrose
school district. Combine that with the 13 (K-12)
years she went to school in Melrose and thats a
lot of years in the same district.
The first year I taught kindergarten was in
the old K-7 building, she said. I was teaching
in the same room I attended in kindergarten in the
1950s. That was memorable. And I had loved my
kindergarten teacher Ms. Vig.
Expectations of what is to be taught have also
changed.
It was more about socializing when I was
in kindergarten, she said. There were some
academics but no pressure to be reading at
the end of kindergarten. We had two hours of
kindergarten, and I took a nap on a shaggy green
rug and had a snack, along with the academics
and the socializing.
As she went through her career, the

expectations changed.
At one time they (kindergartners) were
expected to learn their letter names and sounds by
years end, she said. Today, they nearly need to
know them all when they come into kindergarten.
When they enter the first grade, they are expected
to be reading at a certain level and know a certain
number of sight words (frequently used words).
Expectations are driven, in part, by state
mandates and test results, which outline a
curriculum and classes.
In addition to helping them achieve academic
standard goals, I truly enjoy being around the kids
and socializing with them and having fun, she
said. However, with the increased pressure of
meeting and exceeding state standards, achieving
required test results, along with individual
checking for progress reports, there seems to be
less time for purely enjoying a five-year-olds
world.
Schneider has always taught younger students.
There was something about the five- to six-yearold age group she enjoyed being around.
I did a lot of babysitting when I was younger,
she said. I always liked the curiosity of that age
group.
She never was the teacher for any of her and
husband Genes three children. Actually, she felt
it might have been better that way.
Sometimes, when all the kindergarten classes
were together, I was with them as a teacher, but
really, I dont think they would have wanted me
as their teacher, she said.
Something else that may have helped
her become an effective teacher was that she
remembered what it was like going to school.
Some subjects were a struggle, she said.
Therefore, in my teaching career, I wanted to

Molly Schneider has always enjoyed working one-onone with students. Above, she works with Brandon
Duarte Torres.

be sure to help struggling students achieve their

potential.
While she has had as many as 28 students in
her classes, most of the time she taught between 22
and 25 students during her Title I and kindergarten
teaching career. Considering lots of years she had
half-day kindergarten, with 25 students in each
class, she estimates she has taught well over 1,000
students during her 38-year teaching career.
She was aware she was impacting their lives,
and her goal was the same for each student.

SACRED HEART

School: Sacred Heart, Freeport

Hometown: Freeport, MN
College attended: SCSU
Years as a teacher: 12 years

School: St. Marys Catholic School

Hometown: Grey Eagle, MN
College Attended: Earned my A.A. from
Willmar Community College, and my B.S. and
kindergarten endorsement from St. Cloud State
University.
Years Teaching: Im pretty sure its 23 years.

What do you teach? Kindergarten

What do I teach: Third grade for most of my career. I have also

taught kindergarten and second grade.
What made you decide to pursue a career in education? Good question, Im pretty
sure God was at work on that one. I had to declare a major and at the time I was looking
to double major in Psychology and Sociology but declared Elementary Education. Not
sure why I put it down. I really did not like school as it was not easy for me, so I would
have thought it was the last thing I would want to do. However, I also knew that there
were kids out there that had the same types of problems that I had and maybe could use
someone who wasnt in love with school and their teachers. So here I am.
What is your most memorable experience as a teacher? I had a parent tell me the
other day that her child wanted to write a paper about me because I had influenced his
education.
When I asked why they said, Because it was in Ms. Gails class that I learned it was okay
to make mistakes. That hit hard. I guess that is what I want my students to learn. It is
not all about the paperwork, but it is about making mistakes and knowing that we are
still okay and worthy of love and respect. God doesnt ask us to be perfect but he does
ask us to be the best us we can be. I want kids to know they are safe to make mistakes
in my room and in life. Mistakes make us grow stronger.
What advice would you give to parents of school aged children? Advice for parents
of any age child. Read to them from the day they are born. It is so important. Even if
you read the Sports Illustrated out loud while you are holding them, it doesnt matter,
just read to them. It will build an incredible bond and help with their education later.
How do you spend your summer? I have retired from working at the Ren-Fest, so for
the most part I read, take classes on-line to become a better educator, and be with my
family as much as possible.
If I may say thank you to all the parents out there that work so hard and help in their
childs development. As a teacher we can help to form your childs education, but you
are their first and primary educator.
Ms. Gail

What are some of the challenges you face?: One challenge

that I face is the rapid-changing technology. I do use iPads,
computers and a SMART Board in my classroom daily. However I also want my students
to still get excited about picking up books, paper and pencils. I enjoy seeing them get
excited about doing hands on activities with real objects. It is also a challenge to say
goodbye to a group of students at the end of the year, but very rewarding knowing they
are now ready for first grade.
What do you enjoy most about teaching? In teaching I enjoy helping each child
achieve their best. It is such a privilege being able to watch them learn to read.
What is your most memorable experience as a teacher? I dont think I have just one
memorable experience, but instead a lot of small ones I will always remember. Being
a kindergarten teacher I am able to watch them grow each year and finally graduate.
What advice would you give to parents of school-aged children? Stay involved in
your childs education. During the summer encourage them to read and work on any
skills they need extra help with.
How do you spend your summer? During the summer I enjoy spending time with my
family. I also use this time to prepare for the upcoming school year.

What do you teach? Preschool and

kindergarten
What made you decide to pursue a
career in education? I decided to pursue
a career as a teacher when I was a little girl playing school in our basement with my siblings.
We had a chalkboard painted on our wall that I would use while being the teacher; and I
enjoyed correcting the homework that I had given to my siblings. My desire continued to
grow through my involvement with 4-H when I worked with younger members and when
we volunteered at the Osakis ECFE events. I have always loved working with children and
teaching is an opportunity where I am able to do it every day.
What are some of the challenges you face? A challenge I face as a young teacher is
finding resources to differentiate my instruction to meet the ability levels of all my
students in an exciting and engaging way. Students learn in different ways and have
different interests and being able to accommodate all of their learning styles throughout
the day requires me to think about the child as an individual and as part of the class.
In searching for resources I have found many useful websites and blogs of experienced
teachers that help me be creative in my own classroom.
What do you enjoy most about teaching? My favorite part of the school day is when
the students arrive at school and I say Good Morning! Their faces light up with smiles. I
enjoy being with the students every day and seeing their little light bulb moments when
they understand something new. Along with being with the students, I enjoy the little
challenges that I face as a teacher in the classroom every day. Whether it is falling behind
in the schedule, making a topic interesting for all students, or finding ways to incorporate
fun into our everyday lessons (like turning a regular marker into a magic marker during
math) all keep me thinking of ways to become a better teacher.
What is your most memorable experience as a teacher? One of the most memorable
moments of this year was in the first weeks of school in kindergarten. I had read a book
during math called Little Fish, Big Fish by Frank Asch, which has flip-out pages comparing
big and little things. The students asked me to read it again later that day, so we read it
during our read aloud time. The memorable part is, after I had read the book, one of my
students asked if he could read it to the class. Of course! was my answer. He went right
up to the front of the class and read it to his classmates, which turned into several of the
students asking if they could also read it to the class. Read aloud went a little longer than
scheduled that day, but it was worth it to see students have the courage to read in front
of their peers. The students continue to enjoy reading in front of their peers, which we are
able to do more and more now that they have become beginning readers!
What advice would you give to parents of school-aged children? Some advice I have
for parents of school-aged children is to challenge your children. You are a teacher too!
Give your children opportunities to try something new or help around the house, but at
the same time be there to help them if needed. I encourage my students to try a task
by themselves first, and if they ask for help I am there to guide them and help them be
successful. Children are eager to learn and help; and an unforgettable sight as a teacher
is seeing their excitement after accomplishing a task that they thought was too hard.
How do you spend your summer? Highlights of my summer include farming on my
parents dairy farm, traveling to new places, going on photo walks and spending time
with family and friends.

you for
all
you do!

Surrounded by students full of questions and wanting to learn has been a treat
for Molly Schneider in her years of kindergarten teaching. She is pictured with
students (from left, front) Sinavah Kleve and Morgan Peerboom; (middle) Fatima
Diaz Vasquez; (back) and Alexis Solaja.

I like to think I was one of the first impressionable people in their

school career. Im hoping that I gave them a feeling of accomplishment and
success to continue on in their education, said Schneider.
Former students have come back to thank her. She has taught across the
generations in some families.
I am teaching the children of parents whom I had as kindergarten
students, she said. I tell them I had their mom and dad in kindergarten or
they tell me my mom or dad had you.
Schneider has had her own rewards teaching kindergarten. She is still
thrilled when a student grasps a lesson and knows that they understand it.
That is something she will miss after she retires. But, mainly she will miss
being around the students.
I will miss the children. I will miss the things they say and what they
do, she said.
She will also miss preparing them for their academic careers.
There are rewards in knowing I helped them gain confidence and
knowledge, she said. I agree with the book All I Really Need to Know I
Learned in Kindergarten.
She has found it can sometimes take a whole school year to teach those
lessons. Thats why she is not marking the time to the end of the year and
her career.
I dont do countdowns, she said. I never have, not for the end of the
school year or the end of my career. There is too much to do.

What made you decide to pursue a

career in education? I knew I wanted to
work with kids. Teaching and coaching
seemed to be the perfect choice.

When Todd Broich graduated

from high school in Montevideo, he
wasnt sure if he wanted to be an
landscape architect, a teacher or go
into golf course management.
But when it came down to it, he
relied on his experiences as a teenager
working with kids, and discovered
that his true passion lied there.
I did a lot of coaching when I was
in high school and I loved it, he said.
Also a couple teachers I respected
pushed me towards education.
Now, after 14 years teaching
mainstream physical education &
adapted physical education (DAPE),
he looks back and realizes he made
the right decision.
He also realizes the time he spent
with his father volunteering for the
Special Olympics had a big impact
on his decision.
Hanging around those practices
my dad was coaching taught me a
lot, said Broich. Being around
those individuals and their abilities
and seeing how they love life no
matter whatwhether they won or
lost, they had fun.
TODD BROICH
Continued on page 12

What are some of the challenges you face? It is getting harder and harder to get
students to work outside of class. With all of the extra activities, jobs and sports, students
dont always set aside enough time for school work. I think work ethic, responsibility
and motivation are life-long skills we can always improve on.
What do you enjoy most about teaching? I love working with the students everyday.
I cant explain how great it is to see them have light bulb moments! Math isnt always
easy for students and I hope to break it down so every student can succeed!
What is your most memorable experience as a teacher? There are too many to name!
I just really enjoy working with students every day! They keep me young and on my
toes!
What advice would you give to parents of school-aged children? Dont ever tell your
child you werent good at math. If students believe they can do it and are willing to put
in the effort needed, they can be successful!
How do you spend your summer? I enjoy spending time with my family. We like to
spend time outside, go to the lake and enjoy all the water activities, visit family and
friends, and really just be together!

What do you teach? Kindergarten

Why do you teach? I enjoy it and find it very rewarding!

What made you decide to pursue a career in education?

One of my former teachers, now co-worker, was so great at what
she did; I wanted to be just like her and teach kids how to read,
write, add, subtract and enjoy life! I really wanted to be a coach and being a teacher was
the easiest way to do that. I have always loved school and wanted to share that love
with young people!

What made you decide to pursue a career in education?

As a child I always loved going to school and playing school.
Therefore I thought, Why not do something I really like doing
and hopefully I can make a difference!

What are some of the challenges you face? Trying to keep all of the kids engaged
and learning. There is always a gap in students from high to low so it is sometimes
challenging to create lessons to meet all of the childrens needs.

What are some of the challenges you face? As the world changes I think we must
keep up with the newest innovations and technology, but still remember that the
human interactions are the most valuable. With all the constant changes with standards
and testing we can get bogged down in these areas and not hit the most important part
of actually teaching.

What do you enjoy most about teaching? I love seeing the light bulb turn on! I really
like all the stories I get to hear and all the hugs, pictures and laughs I get too!

What do you enjoy most about teaching? Seeing the excitement in the childrens
faces especially when they have that aha moment and they grasp a new concept.

What is your most memorable experience as a teacher? Being a first-year teacher, the
whole year as been memorable. What really stands out is when I was on maternity leave
and I received a phone call from a little girl. She called just to tell me she missed me!

What is your most memorable experience as a teacher? Oh so manyOne event

that remains etched in my mind was when the Challenger Space Launch tragedy
happened. Our principal announced it and everyone was in sort of silent shock and sad
mode. The students sensed the mood and soon a student voiced a concern that caught
on. The student stated, Oh no! Our lunch exploded! Needless to say we alleviated that
fear, but it did add another round of discussion.

What advice would you give to parents of school-aged children? Practice with your
child at home whether it is reading, writing or arithmetic; it shows your child you care
and it helps the teacher a ton! I would also say though let your child be a kid! Have fun
and play!
How do you spend your summer? I spend my summer with my children at home and
usually have a few other school-aged children over too! We read books, play games,
catch some rays and enjoy life! This summer I will try to get a few things ready for my
classroom like creating new games and finding new books!

What advice would you give to parents of school-aged children? Enjoy your
children! Give them your time! You will never regret the time you spend with them!
How do you spend your summer? Relaxing and re-energizing for another year. I
especially enjoy walking, reading and visiting family and friends both near and far.

Todd Broich continued from page 10____________________________

While Broich loves working with all kids,
he has a special place in his heart for those who
have disabilities.
I really enjoy seeing the Ah-Ha moment
in my adaptive phy ed kids, he said. When
something clicks with them its the coolest thing
in the world.
It can mean as little as balancing on one
foot for 10 seconds or jumping off of two feet.
Whatever it is, when it brings a smile to the
students face, it brings a smile to Broichs face
as well.
You feel like a million bucks when you
know you had a part in them learning and
accomplishing something, he said. When I
look at those kids I realize how much we take
for granted.
Broich has been a physical education teacher
in the Sauk Centre School District for seven
years. He has a unique position in that he teaches
at all three levels and in all three buildings. He
starts his day teaching kindergartners and first
graders and then moves on to teach junior high
and senior high phy ed and DAPE.
I have a unique privilege being able to work
within all the schools and with all the age levels
and abilities, he said.
Broich says it is important to develop a

relationship with all kids, not just some of them.

I try to get to know them, he said. Thats
where you gain respect.
Its all about building a connection. Which is
why he also loves to coach kids away from the
classroom. Broich coaches football, basketball
and baseball, the same sports he played growing
up. A graduate of Ridgewater Community
College and the University of Minnesota,
Broich looks forward to his job every day, but
with a wife and kids of his own, also enjoys his
summers. Thats when he can coach his sons
youth baseball team, and watch his little girls
ride horses on their hobby farm. He and his
family also enjoy spending time at their cabin on
lake Minnewaska.
Wherever he is, Broich is always around
kids, and even though he didnt go into landscape
architecture or golf course management as a
career, has used those philosophies in building
connections and creating relationships that last a
lifetime and make him the best teacher he can be.
Looking back, he is glad he chose a career in
education. There are countless kids who are glad
he did, too.
(right) Broich teaches his kindergarten students the
proper way to grip a baseball bat during a recent
morning at Sauk Centre Elementary School.
