JEEP JAMBOREES PROVIDE VACATION ALTERNATIVE

HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- "Mom! How much longer 'til we get there?" It's a
complaint most parents dread to hear on summer vacations, but on a Jeep Jamboree, a unique family
vacation for the '90s, getting there is indeed all the fun. "The Jeep Jamboree is an off-road vacation
weekend for Jeep owners that enables them to enjoy some magnificent scenery, test the true
capability of their vehicles and, most of all, have a great time," said Larry W. Baker, Jeep/Eagle
general manager. Like the vehicle it's named after, the Jamboree is steeped in tradition that began
more than 40 years ago on the notorious Rubicon Trail in northern California. Long before the term
"sport-utility" was ever used to describe a class of vehicles, Jeep enthusiasts were navigating over
huge boulders and narrow passes on the old Indian trail discovered by trappers in 1844. Since
then, the Jamboree has been expanded to include sites across the United States and into Canada.
Across mountains, through Redwood forests, along rivers and into canyons, the Jamboree trails vary
in both scenery and difficulty, so families can choose just the right trip for them. The 1993
Jamborees begin this week with the Arch Canyon Jeep Jamboree in San Juan County, Utah. The
highlight of the season is the Jeepers Jamboree on the Rubicon Trail, the most challenging and
popular of the Jamborees. The season winds up in the fall with October Jamborees in North
Carolina's Appalachian Mountains and Massachusetts' Mohawk Trail. The Jeep Jamborees continue
to grow. Last year, nearly 3,000 people participated in 22 Jamborees in North America. This year,
seven new sites have been added and enthusiasm is building. "The Jamboree is a great vacation for
the '90s, because its middle name is value," Baker said. Scheduled over weekends, the trip includes
three meals a day, necessary off-roading permits and experienced guides. Most trips offer hotel
accommodations for those who do not wish to camp. Children and parents alike can enjoy swimming,
hiking and exploring. Jamborees are open to Jeep vehicle owners and their families and friends.
Vehicles are to be provided by the participants. The challenges of the trail encourage a slow,
relaxing pace, which also preserves the trails for others to enjoy. All Jamborees support "Tread
Lightly!" program, sponsored by the Jeep/Eagle Division, the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of
Land Management. "Tread Lightly!" is dedicated to promoting increased public awareness of landuse regulations and responsible use of our nation's wild lands. "We strongly emphasize responsible
off-roading," Baker said. "The Jamborees offer us an excellent opportunity to teach these principles
to Jeep owners." No alcoholic beverages are allowed on the trail rides. Violators will be taken out of
the Jamboree without a refund. An hour-long videotape which showcases 14 Jamboree locations is
available for $15 by calling 303-565-7530. Call toll-free 1-800-JEEPEAGLE for additional trip
information. Following is the 1993 Jeep Jamboree schedule with trails rated on a scale of 1-10, a
