Seminar Description and Objectives
This semester we will read and examine a range of authors that
represent the diverse population of the United States of America. The
majority of the literary texts we will cover are prose fiction; at times,
however, we will consult other modes of literature, such as poetry and
drama, to enrich our understanding of societal values and tensions that
arise in a multicultural nation.
While the course will be primarily discursive, students will
ultimately be expected to produce two well-written analyses on short
stories from the selected texts.
Course Texts
Handouts
Course Requirements
o Midterm paper due November 11: 1-2 pages
o Final paper due January 13: 3-4 pages
o Participation
o Attendance
Attendance and Participation
Attendance is required for each seminar this semester. More than
four absences will result in failure. There will be no exceptions.
Participation points will be earned through the contributions you
make to class and small group discussions each week. Dialogue allows
us to exchange ideas, ask questions, and partake in friendly debates
this way we will not only learn from one another, but we will also be
able to pursue a deeper understanding of the texts we read.
Reading Assignments
Each reading assignment should be read prior to the seminar in
which they are discussed. It will be difficult to participate meaningfully
in class discussion and group analysis without reading the assigned
literary texts.

Writing Assignments
Writing is an essential step in the process of literary analysis.
Details on the requirements of each assignment will be given two
weeks before the due date. Papers must be turned in at the beginning
of the seminar they are due. No late papers will be accepted.
Writing a literary analysis is an opportunity to document your
interpretation of a literary text. The writing you submit must be your
own it is acceptable to quote or paraphrase what authors have
written, but you must give credit where credit is due. The Purdue
Online Writing Lab provides a guide for MLA in-text citations and works
cited. Please go to the following address to learn more about the basics
of proper citing: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/
The use of secondary sources should be minimal unless required.
These are your papers your analyses therefore, the majority of the
writing must be yours.
The use of plagiarism is not tolerated. Each paper you submit will
be subject to an electronic plagiarism test. Any plagiarism found in
your papers will result in an automatic failure of the course.
