ADDINOL Get only our best!

German engine oils hit the mark in Russia
The Russian automotive market booms: especially western cars and accessory are in great demand.
Against this background the brand ADDINOL is gaining
ground: a large sales campaign in summer 2008 was
a great success and ensured an enormous increase in
turnover. The campaign was accompanied by huge
billboard advertisements for ADDINOL engine oils in
the urban centres of Russia from Novosibirsk to Yekaterinburg which attracted the attention of the drivers.

ADDINOL XXL billboard advertisements in Russia

The posters on the main roads were hard to overlook as

ADDINOL was present in all major cities such as Cheljabinsk, Kazan, Novosibirsk and Yekaterinburg. The motif
attracted attention and the campaign had the intended
effect. In the shops of the sales partners of ADDINOL
Russia the customers benefited from an attractive offer:
the motto was 4+1. For every bought 4 litre can there
was a 1 litre can for free. Here ADDINOL Super light
MV 0546 was the favoured product. The high-performance
fuel-economy engine oil for gasoline and diesel engines
of passenger cars and transporters is highly fit for mod
ern injection and turbo engines. It displays outstanding
cold-start behaviour, optimum lubrication at all operating
temperatures and excellent wear protection the perfect
characteristics for an application under the difficult conditions in Russia. The climate alone places high demands
on the engine oil: In winter the temperatures go down
to below -35 C and in summer they can rise to nearly
+40 C for example in Yekaterinburg. Furthermore, one
cannot compare driving in Russia with driving in Central
Europe. About 30 million cars are on the roads which are
not of the best condition. At the
same time, the traffic volume in
large cities is similar to Rome or
Paris. Traffic jams and stop-andgo-operation are not only nerveracking; they also demand the
highest performance of the en
gine oil.
Some years ago there were only
three auto brands in Russia:
Lada, Wolga and Moskwitsch.
Today more and more people can
afford a western car. The Russian
Ministry of Economics expects a
vehicle population of more than
90 million for 2020. In spite of

the latest developments of global economy this number

should be realistic. Already today the roads in the cities
cannot cope with the enormous traffic any more. By
2009 the largest state of the world with about 3.45 million
newly licensed passenger cars is probably going to beat
Germany which is Europes largest automotive market
so far. To avoid high import taxes more and more foreign
automotive companies manufacture their cars in Russia
and further major investments in new plants are planned.
This development also holds an enormous potential for
the market of spare parts and accessory. Products made
in Germany are valued particularly just as ADDINOL
high-performance engine oils made in Leuna.

ADDINOL - Good position even in turbulent times

There are clouds threatening to darken the economic
skies. But even at such times ADDINOL is well prepared:
our company has an optimal organisational structure and
is fit and ready to accept the challenge. All innovations
are developed, produced and filled in Leuna. This way
we can react flexibly and at short notice to the demands
of the market.
The focus on high-performance lubricants proves to be
right just now. Considering the present conditions
industrial companies and energy industry will try to
decrease their production costs. However, a change to
low-priced lubricants with a poorer performance is a
counterproductive cost-cutting measure. High-per-
formance lubricants have their price but in the long run
each user benefits from the considerable reduction of
costs while ensuring maximum safety of plants and
production at the same time.
The high-performance gear oil ADDINOL Eco Gear, for
example, achieves extraordinarily long lifetimes and
reduces wear. It improves the efficiency of gears and
provides an enormous energy saving potential. Or
ADDINOL HV Eco Fluid a pressure fluid of outstanding
friction behaviour thanks to a newly developed additive
technology: by applying HV Eco Fluid fuel consumption is
decreased significantly, especially in outdoor hydraulics.
Many manufacturers of fibreboards already benefit from
our new lubricant for belts and chains in high-temperature
conditions: With ADDINOL Belt Lube HT 220 consumption of energy is reduced by about 30 % which lowers
production costs.
We trust in high-performance lubricants with maximum
technical and economic efficiency for our customers.
Often we receive requests of international lubricant
dealers who want to market ADDINOL products. They
know ADDINOL as one of the few German manufacturers
offering a comprehensive product range for all vehicles,
for all industry and, in particular, for all applications requiring excellent high-performance lubricants.

The new chemicals regulation of the European Union establishes stricter conditions for the
handling of chemical substances. For about 30,000
substances which are already marketed and for
circa 500 new substances every year the manufacturers, importers as well as companies processing
chemicals must document that these do not harm
man and environment. This new regulation also
concerns almost all lubricants.
REACH is Registration, Evaluation, and Authoris
ation of Chemicals. Although it is only binding in Eu
rope, it also has an impact on manufacturers beyond
the European Union who want to deliver their products
to Europe. The regulation came into force on June 1st,
2007 and ADDINOL has been occupied in questions
of REACH for the last months.
Substances produced or imported in quantities of 1
ton or more per year per company must be registered
for their respective application. Pre-registration of all
substances which are currently at the market is going
to last until November 30th, 2008. This pre-registration
only requires the naming of substance (including
EINECS*- and CAS**-number), manufacturer and quantity; so this is comparatively easy and does not incur
any costs. The list of the pre-registered substances
is probably going to be published in January 2009.
ADDINOL is a downstream user in terms of REACH
as our company only manufactures preparations. This
means ADDINOL is not obliged to register directly but
needs to fulfil some other duties instead: We must
inform our suppliers and customers on constituents,
characteristics, dangers, handling and storage as well
as toxicity of our products. Furthermore, there are
measures to minimise the risk in handling these substances which must be followed and communicated
accordantly. In some cases it might be necessary to
draw up a chemical safety report (CSR).

Our suppliers however are directly concerned by the

duty of registration: their substances need to be regis
tered because otherwise they must not be sold any
more after the 1st December 2008.
In the following years the pre-registered substances
are going to be registered, depending on manufactured/imported quantity within 3.5 to 11 years after
the regulation has come into force. This registration
involves both costs and effort. If the manufacturer/importer does not register within the given time limit the
substance must be taken off the market.
The demands of REACH require extraordinary care because otherwise there is the danger of substance loss
for example. To avoid any risk ADDINOL has prepared
for REACH diligently; quantities and suppliers were
defined for each substance as well as the accordant
position of ADDINOL within the supply chain and the
respective duties. In the next step we questioned our
suppliers by the help of standardised questionnaires
of the VSI (Registered Association of Lubricants Industry) concerning their intentions for pre-registration.
So far all of our suppliers intent to pre-register their
substances. Since October we have inquired whether
the substances have been actually registered. The
loss of substances can influence the composition of
the concerned lubricant. In such cases our customers
will be informed accordingly.

The World of
Mine gas Valuable energy out of
mine and pit
The HGS Henkelhausen G.A.S. Service GmbH & Co.
KG, Krefeld, possesses in-depth competence for
the servicing of gas engines and combined heat and
power plants which is based on their experience in
the generation of energy out of mine gas and renewable gases of more than 20 years. Additionally, HGS
is contractual partner of the MWM GmbH and the
Deutz AG. Support and service of HGS include the
maintenance according to defined plans, a reliable
engine management system, control and remote
supervision. This way downtimes can be reduced
and damages can be avoided, the availability of the
plants is increased.
HGS also uses ADDINOL Gas engine oil MG 40-Extra
LA in plants operated with mine gas. During application the condition of the oil is checked constantly
by the help of oil analyses. The gas engines of Deutz
run trouble-free with MG 40-Extra LA and planned oil
drain intervals could be achieved even under difficult
conditions. ADDINOL Gas engine oil ensures an excellent and all-encompassing protection of the gas
engine: optimum engine cleanliness as well as highest protection against corrosive and mechanical
wear are ensured due to high thermal stability and
outstanding ageing characteristics.

In the Ruhr area in Germany mine gas is used

as valuable energy source. In combined heat and
power plants it is converted into electricity and
heat. During this process the gas engines place
high demands on their oil. The service provider
HGS in Krefeld relies on ADDINOL Gas engine oil
MG 40-Extra LA with great success.
Mine gas is released during the mining of hard coal.
It consists of a mixture of methane, nitrate and CO2.
Miners are afraid of mine gas because it can cause
pit explosions. In Germany more than one billion m
methane discharge per year both from mines still in
operation and from disused pits. In compounds with
oxygen methane is not only explosive, but also has
negative effects on the climate. Actually, the greenhouse effect of methane is considerably stronger
than the effect of a similar quantity of CO2.

gas also holds difficulties. The composition of the

drawn out gas of disused mines for example differs
considerably from the gas out of the active coal production. As the ventilation is stopped, air has no direct
access to the coal seam any more; as a result mine
gas contains almost no uncombined oxygen. The
oxygen which got into the existing spaces via open
pits during mining or after closing reacts with carbon
and forms CO2. Therefore mine gas contains not only
methane but also oxygen which is bound in CO2 and
nitrate. Furthermore, the composition of mine gas
varies, the content of methane can be below 30 %
and the gas can have a moisture level of more than
80 %. Even under these difficult conditions the gas
engines must achieve maximum performance, thus
they place high demands on the gas engine oil. In
questions of installation and maintenance one should
consult the respective experts.

According to projections there is enough energy out

of mine gas to supply whole cities with heat and electricity and not only in the Ruhr area. Great Britain
and Eastern Europe for example already make use
of their resources. All over the world there are huge
deposits of hard coal and disused mines which could
supply mine gas for the utilisation in CHP.

In Germany mine gas has been utilised since several

years. By the help of combined heat and power plants
(CHP) the gas is used to generate electricity and heat.
This utilisation does not only serve the generation of
energy but also contributes to the protection of man
and environment. The gas is drawn out of used pits
to ensure the safety of miners; however, also the gas
of disused pits poses the danger of explosion and
therefore is sucked out as well. In the Ruhr area alone
there are thousands of kilometres of disused mines
and it might take decades until the gases get to the
surface.
Today mine gas is used by power suppliers and
public utility companies as energy source for their
CHP. Most plants are highly flexible if the resources
are exhausted the plant can be easily build up at
another location. However, the operation with mine

ADDINOL BELT LUBE HT 220 Sets new

standards in the production of fibreboards
Furniture industry, interior work or panelling
fibreboards are used for several purposes.
Fibreboards are both classic fibreboards and
so-called MDF boards meaning medium-density
fibreboards which belong to the wooden materials
with the highest demand worldwide. Such boards
are manufactured in large press production lines
with increased requirements on the lubricant.
The innovative ADDINOL Belt Lube HT 220 was
successfully tested under practical conditions
and proved to be superior to the lubricants
applied so far.
Fibreboards are made out of defibred wood which is
sized and processed in large special presses. During
processing the paste-like raw mixture is applied onto
a large steel band. This steel band moves through
the press by the help of a chain which runs on both
sides. First of all the raw mixture is heated up to about
+180 C. Then it is shaped by several large rolls which
are arranged behind each other and place pressure
onto the mass. Because of the pressure from above
and the high temperature the water contained in the
raw mixture escapes and the remaining constituents
combine with each other. The distance between rolls
and steel band decreases with every step. In this
way the different thickness degrees of the boards are
regulated as well. When the shaping of the boards is
finished they pass through a cooling phase with the
steel band before finally leaving the press line, which
usually has a length of more than 70 metres.
The chain is exposed to extreme operating conditions. Immediately after the hot area of the press it
moves through the cool area. Water and steam of the
boards affect the chain and make it prone to corrosion. The loads on the last metres of the press and
on the deflection pulleys are particularly high. Here
the applied chain and belt lubricant is of utmost importance. If its performance is too low, serious problems can occur. The flash point of the lubricant and
its temperature stability must be high, while at the
same time low evaporation loss and oil consumption
are required. If evaporation causes sediments, these
settle on the belt and its support and drive rollers
and form incrustations, which hinder the production

Fibreboards belong to the wooden materials with the highest demand worldwide.

process considerably. If the oil is not up to the high

tensions and forces between the steel bands and the
deflection pulleys, this leads to slip-stick effects and
a slipping of the steel bands. Chain, steel bands and
gears are exposed to extreme loads under these conditions. Vibrations can occur in the whole plant which
can cause the raw mixture to fall apart before it could
be pressed at all.
ADDINOL Belt Lube HT 220 was developed especially for the lubrication of thermally heavy loaded
friction pairings in press production lines. Before its
official launch it was tested in a large-scale field test
in the German plant of one of the most important
market players in the sector of manufacturing and
refining of derived timber products. The high-temperature stable lubricant was applied in a modified
Siempelkamp ContiRoll press. Already during the

first weeks it became apparent that the innovative

product developed at ADDINOL possessed an extraordinary performance. The joint analysis after the com-
pletion of the field test confirmed this. Under all production conditions and even under maximum production capacity utilisation ADDINOL Belt Lube HT 220
achieved outstanding results:
1. Significant reduction of energy consumption
During the field test the energy input was determined
at the drives of the press. With ADDINOL Belt Lube
HT 220 a reduction by about ca. 30 % could be real
ised under comparable operating conditions!
2. Strong reduction of wear
With the application of ADDINOL Belt Lube HT 220
wear particles could be reduced considerably compared to the competitive product. There were no new
incrustations on the belt, previous incrustations on
the driving drum could be solved and all wear parameters could be lowered significantly.

3. Reduction of lubricant consumption

Compared to the previously used competitive product
the oil consumption was decreased by 8-10 litres/day
on the average. Therefore the operating costs of the
plant could be downsized.

The World of
ADDINOL Sprays
Small cans with remarkable effect
In industry, workshop and household users
rely on handy spray cans naturally. They have a
sophisticated operating mode and their history is
legendary.
The first spray can was developed in 1927. A Norwegian engineer looking for the best method to wax his
ski had the brilliant idea. He constructed a can which
contained both the actual substance and a propellant
and was equipped with an atomizer to disperse the
substance. He took advantage of the fact that finest
particles are suspended in a lighter medium. His invention was improved during the following years and
applied on a small scale at first. Finally the idea to use
spray cans as insecticide brought success. In 1942
spray cans were produced in large quantities for the
first time. Soon they captured the field of everyday
necessities. Hair spray was one of the first real big
sellers in the 1960s. Today colours, lacquers, disinfectants, cosmetic products and even food are offered in aerosol cans.

Our sketch shows the operation of an aerosol can.

The can made of tin plate or aluminium is filled with
a mixture of lubricant, propellant and in some cases
solvent. The propellant ensures the required pres
sure. To get a homogeneous mixture the can must be
shaken before use. If the nozzle is opened the mixture
moves upwards through the riser and is spread op
timally by spraying. Depending on the application and
the requested spray pattern the cans are equipped
with the respective atomizers.

Aerosol spray cans offer unique advantages:

- protection and preservation of the content
- useable independent of location, also at points
which are difficult to access
- economical, exact and even dosage.
ADDINOL offers more than twenty products in aerosol spray cans for lubrication, cleaning, protection,
maintenance and special applications.

Chlorofluorocarbons used to be used as propellants

but they had negative effects on earths ozone layer.
Today only propane, butane, isobutane and other
propellants with minor effects are used. Alternatives
are pump sprays and various compression sprayers
which can be filled. To some extent they are more economical but they are not suitable for all lubricants.

ADDINOL Lubricants Romania s.r.l.

A story of success from Romania

In 2002, when Emeric Torkos founded
ADDINOL Lubricants Romania s.r.l., the economic conditions in his country did not look too
promising. However, Emeric Torkos possessed
comprehensive experience in the sale of lubricants and was sure of his success. Especially in a
country like Romania, where the economy is still
being built up, there are excellent prospects for
high-performance lubricants in the long run. And
Emeric Torkos should be right after all.

trains, Perkins powered and locally produced harvesters, Meiller tippers and in many other automotive
applications.

Although the beginning was hard and the first years

were very demanding for the team of Emeric Torkos
and Dragos Nastase, their work brought the expected
success. The crucial factors were: the outstanding
quality products of ADDINOL, the high flexibility and
commitment of the whole team and an excellent service. With their focus and range ADDINOL Lubricants
Romania s.r.l. perfectly matched the conditions of the
market.

Also many industrial firms in Romania use ADDINOL

high-performance lubricants and appreciate the consultancy service of ADDINOL Romania. One typical
example is Vilmar. The company has been belonging
to the French Genoyer group since 1991. In the man
ufacturing of fittings, flanges and valves ADDINOL
high-performance lubricants are applied. Vilmar operates all over the world, companies such as Shell,
Exxon Mobil, Aramco, Gaz de France and IngersollRand are among its customers.

From the very beginning Emeric Torkos had a clear

marketing policy for his company: he approached industrial companies, repair shops and haulage firms
like forwarding, shipping and railway companies.
These are not only supplied directly by ADDINOL
Romania s.r.l., but also by a network of distributors
which sell about 40 % of the lubricants.
Today ADDINOL is firmly established on the Romanian
market. One can find ADDINOL lubricants in Siemens

A typical example of success is the company Autoconstruct: the exclusive importer of Meiller tippers in
Romania and the biggest export partner of Meiller.
All Meiller tippers of Autoconstruct are supplied with
ADDINOL lubricants thanks to the commitment of
Emeric Torkos and his team.

Emeric Torkos has already achieved the goals he had

set himself in 2002. And still the success of ADDINOL
Romania continues. The structure of the product
range is adjusted to the rapid technical and eco
nomic progress of the country. Corresponding to
the requirements of modern vehicles and machines
more and more high-performance lubricants are asked for. Furthermore, new sectors, such as wind power, are gaining ground in Romania. The first three

wind power plants of the country are already in operation near Constanta. All of their lubrication points
are provided with ADDINOL lubricants, their gears
are operated with ADDINOL Eco Gear. However, this
is just the beginning: within the next years wind farms
shall be established and ADDINOL Romania is going
to supply the service company of these farms with
ADDINOL lubricants within a strategic partnership.

HMH Mineralle a strong partner of ADDINOL

A good friend had the decisive tip: Arnd
Sander was already successful in the mineral oil
trade and encouraged Klaus Ulrich and Andreas
Hagemann to go into this business as well. In
1992 they founded HMH, the Helftaer Minerallhandel GmbH, in Eisleben, Luthers native town
in Central Germany. Today HMH provides many
thousand households, commercial customers
in industry, small trade and agriculture as well
as petrol stations with lubricants of ADDINOL,
heating oils and fuels.
At the beginning HMH focussed on the sale of heat
ing oils and diesel fuel. They started with three employees and a tank car and soon the first successes
could be achieved. More and more customers asked
for lubricants and therefore HMH decided to become
a partner of ADDINOL. Today HMH has 20 employees
and five of these work in the department lubricants.
Andreas Hocke and his team sell ADDINOL highperformance lubricants in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt
and Thuringia. The professional advisory service and
support of the customers is a decisive plus. The
quick delivery is ensured by two company-owned
lorries and urgent orders are delivered by the
sales representatives with their vans. Customers of
HMH are for example such well-known companies
as the Linde AG in Leuna, beckers bester
(manufacturer of fruit juices), the Mitteldeutsche

Fahrradwerke AG and the Mitteldeutsche Baustoffe

GmbH with its gravel pits and quarries.
Andreas Hocke: Our long-time customer relations
speak for themselves. We do not only offer the tried
and tested high-performance lubricants of ADDINOL
but also a comprehensive service package. This
package includes lubrication charts, lubricant analy
ses, optimisation of the application and a special
service for plants in industry including the disposal
of used oils and emulsions, old filters and further
equipment soiled with oil. With ADDINOL as our
partner we can offer lubricants of the premier league.
Especially in industrial applications and biogas plants
in agriculture we could extend the oil drain intervals
considerably and achieved very gratifying successes.
If required Dirk Herrmann of ADDINOL supports us
in the technical advisory service of our customers.
Word-of-mouth recommendations have a positive
effect for example in the power generation out of
biogas and bring many new customers.
The tip of Arnd Sander was the starting point for
HMH. In the meantime the lubricant business of his
A.S. GmbH has been integrated into the HMH GmbH
and especially in Thuringia it contributes to the devel
opment of the business. In the near future HMH sees
excellent chances in the sale of industrial lubricants
with the particular focus on wind power plants,
