Infrared(IR)isinvisibleradiantenergy,electromagneticradiation
withlongerwavelengthsthanthoseofvisiblelight,extendingfrom
thenominalrededgeofthevisiblespectrumat700nanometers
(frequency430THz)to1mm(300GHz)[1](althoughpeoplecan
seeinfrareduptoatleast1050nminexperiments[2][3][4][5]).Mostof
thethermalradiationemittedbyobjectsnearroomtemperatureis
infrared.
Infraredradiationwasdiscoveredin1800byastronomerSir
WilliamHerschel,whodiscoveredatypeofinvisibleradiationin
thespectrumlowerinenergythanredlight,bymeansofitseffect
uponathermometer.[6]Slightlymorethanhalfofthetotalenergy
fromtheSunwaseventuallyfoundtoarriveonEarthintheformof
infrared.Thebalancebetweenabsorbedandemittedinfrared
radiationhasacriticaleffectonEarth'sclimate.

dipolemoment,makingitausefulfrequencyrangeforstudyof
theseenergystatesformoleculesofthepropersymmetry.Infrared
spectroscopyexaminesabsorptionandtransmissionofphotonsin

includetargetacquisition,surveillance,nightvision,homingandtracking.Humansatnormalbody
temperatureradiatechieflyatwavelengthsaround10m(micrometers).Nonmilitaryusesincludethermal
efficiencyanalysis,environmentalmonitoring,industrialfacilityinspections,remotetemperaturesensing,
shortrangedwirelesscommunication,spectroscopy,andweatherforecasting.
