Community Development
Officer: Viv Barker

Welcome to the first Strath Neighbourhood Centre newsletter for 2016. I realise it is a
little overdue however much has happened in the past 3 months.
Due to the unexpected resignation of our inaugural Community Development Officer, Lyn
Bennett, the Committee made the decision to go through the recruitment process once
again. Im very pleased to say I was successful in applying for the position and
commenced on 22 February, after an initial retirement period of just over 2 months.
My previous position over the past 12 years was that of Executive Officer with Southern
Volunteering, which involved providing a broad range of volunteer-related services
including training and support for volunteers and coordinators of volunteers within the
south metropolitan area and the Fleurieu region from Yankalilla to Victor Harbor, Goolwa
and Strathalbyn.
Since commencing with my new role its been a matter of building on the excellent
groundwork that Lyn instigated and implementing additional activities and programs. We
are pleased to have University of the Third Age (U3A) using our premises for a number of
their sessions including Computing, Japanese, French and Genealogy. Centacare also
provides Family and Relationship Counselling once a week.
I look forward to catching up with more local groups and organisations in the near future to
introduce myself and provide an update on the aims of the Strath Neighbourhood Centre
and how we might be able to collaborate in future projects.

International Womens Day

On 4 March we celebrated International Womens Day with an event at the Old Grain
Store in Commercial Road Strathalbyn, generously provided by Liz and Guy Adams of
Brothers in Arms.
Guests included 120 women and Councillor Ben Brazzalotto, who thoroughly enjoyed the
evening with a segment highlighting the stories of four inspirational local women:
Freda Mills, Liz Adams, Cate Goodall and Cintra Amos spoke about their achievements
and the challenges encountered along the way, a wonderful mix of poignancy, sadness
and humour. Each had a special piece of advice to other women in the hope they would
inspire them in achieving their goals.
Our sincere thanks go to Amy Chandler and Kristy Martin for their support with organising
the event; Kate Clapton-Caputo for the catering; Liz Adams for supplying the venue; and
Emma Cooney for the music and singing over the noise of 120 women. Thanks also to
the volunteers seconded by Amy to manage the bar and distribute the food on the night.
There were many others involved with the event, along with the many businesses and
individuals who donated raffle prizes, all of which are too numerous to mention with the
risk of missing someone.
All funds raised on the night were in support of the Strath Neighbourhood Centre and we
can now announce the final tally is $2,250 which will be used to deliver a range of valuable
activities such as a Parenting Education Program.
There are plans to make International Womens Day an annual event on the Strath
Neighbourhood Centre calendar and we look forward to something even bigger and better.

Centre update cont:
Neighbour Day in the Park
Just two weeks later on 23 March the Strath Neighbourhood Centre combined with the Alexandrina Community
Connect program to celebrate Neighbour Day in the Park. The idea came out of wanting to have an event for
both Neighbour Day and Parks Week, making Neighbour Day in the Park an appropriate compromise.
Our sincere thanks go to the Strath NC volunteers for providing a fabulous morning tea in the Rotunda at the
idyllic Soldiers Memorial Park in the centre of Strathalbyn. While 30 visitors attended this inaugural event it is
anticipated the numbers will increase in future years.
