PACTS ALUMNI ACTION PLAN

A blueprint for growth, 2010-2012

PACTS, it’s more than just an acronym to most of us. As former students,
volunteers, parents, and staff members, it’s the name of a dear family
friend that we hold close to our hearts.

In order to collectively foster the widespread goodwill among PACTS Alumni, it was decided
three years ago to formally begin a PACTS Alumni Committee to support activities,
programs, and causes that would support the PACTS Program, its students, and assembled
alumni family. In this short time, much has been accomplished:

 Three PACTS Seniors have received first-year scholarship support from scholarship funds
collected from PACTS Alumni Members.
 Three Large Reunion events have been hosted, celebrating and encouraging graduating
PACTS students and their families, and providing networking opportunities for alumni.
 Thirty PACTS Seniors have been mentored by PACTS Alumni at the end of their school
years by PACTS Alumni Members.
 Alumni Board Members have increased the presence of the PACTS Program throughout
the museum by participating on several committees and task forces.
 The PACTS Alumni Board will shortly ratify new set of bylaws, ensuring a strong
foundation for the group to grow into the future.

As with most great accomplishments, there is still more to do in order for the PACTS Alumni
Committee to begin realizing its full potential. The PACTS Alumni Action Plan is a three-
year blueprint that is designed to help our group plan, prioritize, and execute the projects
that will help the group grow into a stronger, more successful force that can accomplish the
growing needs of the PACTS Program as it moves into a mature program base, and the needs
of our growing Alumni Base.

The key to the success of this plan will be your support. Each of the goals outlined in this
plan will require the broad support of all Alumni Members and other committee stakeholders
in order to reach completion. Our future is now, and I look forward to moving into it hand-in-
hand with our family.

In courage and excitement,

Manuel McDonnell-Smith
Chairperson
PACTS Alumni Committee

Goal #1 – Grow the Scholarship

The PACTS Alumni Committee will distribute $5,000 in scholarship dollars to graduating
students through June 2010. Named in honor of Gilbert A. West Jr., the program is designed
to honor the outgoing spirit, generosity, and goodwill that Gilbert created as one of the
program’s first Explainers.

 June 2010- Launch Junior Alumni Mentoring Program. Currently only graduating
students have meeting and mentorship opportunities with PACTS Alumni Mentors. At the
end of the ’09-’10 School Year, PACTS students leaving the 11th Grade will have exclusive
mentoring opportunities with PACTS Alumni. The program is designed to assist our
students create a plan of excellence that will guide them to a successful college application
and preparation process.

 By May 2011- Double the Scholarship Financial Pool. In 2010, the Alumni
Committee will distribute one $1,000 scholarship to a graduating Explainer. Beginning in
2011, the fund will expand to be able to support the distribution of $2,000 yearly without
severely depleting the fund. This will be accomplished by a major Alumni Fundraising
Program.

 June 2011- Begin awarding two Scholarships yearly. A stronger Scholarship fund
base will allow the program to award scholarship funds to two outgoing seniors every year.

Goal #2- Triple the active membership of the Alumni Committee

 Fall 2010- Relaunch the PACTS Mentor Program. The PACTS Alumni Committee
will serve as the primary conduit for providing meaningful opportunities for PACTS
Alumni members to interact with the current student population as mentors, workshop
assistants, and project leaders. The Alumni Committee will work with the volunteer
department to set a yearly volunteer hour goal for the Alumni members to reach.

 Fall 2010- Alumni Quarterly Meetings Begin. The Alumni Board will begin hosting
quarterly sessions to update all Alumni Members on current happenings, new
opportunities, and program happenings. This meeting will also serve as a point for Alumni
Members to re-connect.

 June 2011- Alumni Weekend Programming Relaunch. The PACTS Alumni Board
will continue to be a major source of support and programming to celebrate the graduation
of PACTS students.

Goal #3- Increase visibility in the museum and community

 2010- Ongoing New Student Recruitment. PACTS Alumni Members will be asked to
support the recruitment of new PACTS Students through personal promotions and
activities. This will be supported by the PACTS Staff

to join this effort formally in 2011. In summer 2011, the PACTS Alumni Board will
formally move all meetings to programming Saturdays to increase visibility among the
program participants, and museum staff.

 Fall 2011- First Edition of PACTS Alumni Journal. PACTS Alumni Board Members
will begin publishing an annual report of activities to be submitted to the museum’s
development department and other parties. This will include scholarship fundraising
totals, volunteer hour totals, updates on Alumni and scholarship recipients.
