Magis
Magis is a Latin word that means more, in fact with my project I want to overcame some of the
current problems in diabetes therapy with an innovative product.

I noticed that a person with diabetes has to carry with him a lot of stuff because there is a differ-
ent object for every moment in the therapy. A lancing device with his lancets, a glucose meter,
an insulin supplier ad a diary. I count the diary as separate because paper diaries are still pre-
ferred because they allow to write personal comments.
Even thou all this items have to work together thy are still designed separately.
My idea is to design a single innovative system that gives the patient the possibility to control all
therapy’s parameters and insulin delivery using today’s technology and not futuristic techniques.
Magis is a Personal Diabetes device that has many advantages, it is:

- Compact_ the entire system is just 110 x 55 millimeters large and 22 millimeters thick, it
fits every pocket and you don’t need anything else
- All round_ you don’t have to use many different objects any more, just one
- Tough_ it is designed to resist, screen and keyboard are secured when closed
- Nice_ look counts!

Magis has a wide oled screen to display all informations about therapy and an extended key-
board that the patient can use to complete the diary with personal comments and not just with
few icons like today’s electronic diaries. The lancing device is extremely small and is enclosed in
the Diabetes Manager when not in use.

I decided to use the fast coulometric method for testing because it is the most accurate available
today, new technologies have been developed but they are not ready for everyone. Even con-
tinuous monitoring is used just for few days a year because of costs and need of recalibration
every 12 hours.

In order to design a slim object I have developed an innovative solution for the testing stripes,
they are not stored in cylindrical drums but on a continuous tape like in the old magnetic cas-
settes. This solution allowed me to store as much as more than 30 tests in a little cassette just 6
millimeters thick. This cassette will than be placed under a cover case in the Diabetes Manager
and a little motor will move the tape in the correct position. To execute the test a little protection
should be removed from the front of Magis so the testing tape becomes accessible.
I developed an innovative solution also to design a very small lancing device.

Like the testing stripes usually the lancets are single or stored in drums in much thicker objects.
To have the advantage of a multi lancet cartridge in a slim device I developed a solution in
which lancets are stored one in front of one other, 3 in one single cartridge.
This device works as all others but when you need to change a used lancet you just take it from
the front and place it in the back of the object so the second one slides ahead ready for a new
test. This new device has a diameter of just 12 millimeters and it is very easy to use.

With Bluetooth technology Magis takes can control wireless new generations of pumping devices
like Solo4you or Omnipod . Once tested glucose level, the patient can elaborate the data statis-
tics, apply the therapy and complete the diary with just one instrument and in a while.

Moreover the advantage of this wireless Diabetes Manager is that it can communicate also with
other devices. So Magis can send all results to your computer or your doctor using your cell
phone connection to the web. Or it can deal with your running shoe’s sensor to adjust the level
of insulin depending on how much you trained today. It can also display pictures showing the
amount of carbohydrates contained in different dishes to help the patient dosing correctly insulin
boluses.
It can be really the only instrument to manage the whole therapy and, last but not least, it is
elegant and can be produced in various colors.
Magis is much more.
