TH PASTOR
PART 1
Fourth in the Ministry Gifts Series
by Kenneth Hagin
EPHESIANS 4:11-12
11 And he g a v e some, apostles; and
some, prophets; and some, evangelists;
and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for
the work of the ministry, for the edifying
of the body of Christ:
A pastor is a s h e p h e r d of God's
sheep. Jesus is the Good Shepherd,
t h e G r e a t S h e p h e r d , t h e Chief
Shepherd of all God's s h e e p . But
He has some u n d e r s h e p h e r d s .
T h e pastor stands in that office.
God calls m e n and equips t h e m to
shepherd or pastor a flock.
We can see the necessity for
shepherds. As believers began to
be g a t h e r e d t o g e t h e r in recog
nized local churches, or groups, or
assemblies, in early N e w Testa
m e n t days, t h e n e e d for certain
ones to exercise a position of lov
ing oversight and care would
n a t u r a l l y arise. J e s u s spoke of peo
ple going astray as sheep without
a s h e p h e r d . (Did you k n o w that's
w h y m a n y sheep are going astray
today? Because t h e y ' r e w i t h o u t a
shepherd.)
Such persons w e r e required to
be more or less settled in t h e
locality and residents, for a time at
least, of that o n e place. T h e y w e r e
distinguished from the apostles
a n d o t h e r ministries w h o w e r e
called to m o v e a r o u n d .
It's plain that the early c h u r c h e s
w e r e put in t h e c h a r g e of local
elders. T h e Greek word for elder
simply means an older person. Dr.
P. C. Nelson, the noted Greek
scholar, pointed out that in t h e
b a b y h o o d state of t h e c h u r c h t h e y
didn't h a v e pastors. T h e y w e r e
starting out.
"Let's get back to t h e Acts of t h e
Apostles," some folks say.
No. Let's don't get back there. If
w e do t h e c h u r c h will be a b a b y
thingin a b a b y h o o d state. Back
to some of t h e experiences availa
ble to usyes. But we don't w a n t
to get back t h e r e altogether. When
t h e c h u r c h started out it was a
b a b y c h u r c h . T h e y didn't h a v e
a n y ministers except t h e apostles.
It takes time to develop ministries.
It t a k e s t i m e to d e v e l o p t h e
pastoral office.
V e r y often to begin with t h e y
would simply appoint some of the
older m e n to oversee t h e local
flock or assembly until God could
develop ministries.
T h e Word of God speaks about
not putting in a novice e v e n as a
by Kenneth Hagin
e v e n h u n d r e d fifty y e a r s
before, God h a d m a r k e d o u t this
d a u g h t e r of David w h o is to give
birth to that wonderful Being in a
m a n g e r cradle in B e t h l e h e m
t h r o u g h t h e p r o p h e t Isaiah:
ISAIAH 7:13-14
13 And he said, Hear y e n o w , O house of
David; Is it a small thing for y o u to w e a r y
men, but will y e w e a r y my God also?
14 Therefore the Lord himself shall g i v e
you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall con
c e i v e , and bear a son, and shall call his
name Immanuel.
v i r g i n is to be simply t h e recepta
cle of t h a t Holy O n e u n t o t h e d a y
He is b r o u g h t forth.
A d a m was created. T h e rest of
t h e h u m a n race w a s g e n e r a t e d b y
natural processes. But this O n e to
be b r o u g h t forth is to be formed b y
a special act of divine power. T h e
Apostle Paul speaks of His birth in
t h e following words:
PHILIPPIANS 2:6-8
6
Who, b e i n g in t h e form of God,
thought it not robbery to be equal with
God:
7
But made himself of no reputation,
and took upon him the form of a servant,
and w a s made in the likeness of men:
8
And being found in fashion as a man,
he humbled himself, and became obedient
unto death, e v e n the death of the cross.
A m o d e r n translation of that
p a s s a g e h e l p s us see it m o r e
clearly:
Who existing in the form of God counted
not the being on an equality with God a
thing to be grasped: But emptied himself,
taking the form of a servant, being made
in the likeness of men, and being found in
the fashion as a man he humbled himself
becoming obedient unto death, yea, the
death of the cross.
He h a d existed a l w a y s in t h e
form of God; b u t H e empties Him
self a n d takes t h e form of a b o n d
servant; b e i n g m a d e in t h e like
ness of m a n .
HIS PREEXISTENCE
T h e Person w e n o w k n o w as
J e s u s Christ is o n e of t h e t h r e e
divine persons of t h e Diety. A s
God, H e h a d n o b e g i n n i n g . It is t h e
t i m e before He b e c a m e a m a n that
w e refer to as His preexistence.
Micah speaks of Him as existing
from all eternity:
MICAH 5:2
2
But t h o u , B e t h l e h e m E p h r a t a h ,
though thou be little among the thousands
of Judah, yet out of t h e e shall he come
forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel;
w h o s e goings forth have been from of old,
from everlasting.

had with thee before the world was...
24 Father, I will that they also, whom

thou hast g i v e n me: for thou lovedst me
before the foundation of the world.

Him:
HEBREWS 10:5
5
Wherefore w h e n he cometh into the
world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering
thou wouldest not, but a b o d y hast thou
prepared me:
God, in s e n d i n g Jesus, w r o u g h t
for us His Great Plan of Redemp
tion.
The Redemption of m a n must
eminate from God. Because m a n is
a broken, helpless slave w i t h o u t
r e s o u r c e s in t h e h a n d s of a n
e n e m y (Satan) w h o rules h i m with
out m e r c y a n d w h o h a s t h e au
thority to cast him into hell. God
must provide a Redeemer.
This Redeemer must be ade
quate to meet e v e r y d e m a n d of
Justice a n d e v e r y need of m a n . He
must be big e n o u g h to c o n q u e r
Satan, and to bring Life a n d im
mortality to the broken, b o n d a g e d
human.
This Redeemer m u s t b e c o m e in
carnate. A s a spiritual b e i n g He
m u s t take on a h u m a n b o d y . This
b o d y c a n n o t be mortal as ours is. If
it were, He would be a subject of
Satan. He must h a v e a b o d y pat
t e r n e d after t h e p u r e b o d y of t h e
first m a n A d a m . He m u s t be con
ceived a n d born in such a m a n n e r
that He will not be a subject of
Satan. He must be a substitute for
m a n . He must pass t h e examina
tion and r e q u i r e m e n t s J u s t i c e de
m a n d s of a substitute. He could not
be an angel, a disembodied spirit,
or a n y special b e i n g created for
the occasion. He must be God
Himself. D i e t y m u s t suffer for
humanity.
T h e o n l y w a y this can be d o n e is
for God's beloved Son to c o m e out
of God's bosom, lay aside t h e glory
and majesty He has enjoyed
t h r o u g h eternity at t h e Father's
right hand, and c o m e d o w n h e r e
on earth a n d assume t h e physical
b o d y of a h u m a n .
T h e n God must take m a n ' s sin
naturethat hideous monstrous
t h i n g called spiritual deathand
lay it upon the spirit of his Holy
Eternal Son.
The Son must go u n t o j u d g m e n t .
T h e w r a t h a n d i n d i g n a t i o n of
Justice against sin a n d treason
must be meted out to Him. He
must pay the wages of sin. It's de
m a n d e d of t h e h u m a n . A n d He
becomes answerable.
Nowafter He has paid the
penalty, after He has suffered till
t h e claims of Justice are fully
metthen Life Eternal must be
given to His spirit. His n a t u r e must
be c h a n g e d until t h e p r o p h e c y
from t h e second Psalm is fulfilled,
"Thou art m y Son; this day have I
begotten thee." He must be born
out of spiritual death into Life that
Paul m a y say, "He is the first bom
from the dead, The head of the
church." He is m a d e alive in t h a t
dark domain of hell!
He m u s t meet Satan, bind him in
his o w n house, a n d take a w a y t h e
a r m s in w h i c h h e is trusting.
COLOSSIANS 2:15
15 And having spoiled principalities and
powers, he made a s h e w of them openly,
triumphing over them in it.

TITUS 1:7-9
7
For a bishop must be blameless, as the
steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon
angry, not given to wine, no striker, not
g i v e n to filthy lucre;
8
But a lover of hospitality, a lover of
good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;
9
Holding fast the faithful word as he
hath been taught, that he may b e able b y
sound doctrine both to exhort and to con
vince the gainsayers.
1 PETER 5:2-3
2
Feed the flock of God which is among
you, taking the oversight thereof, not b y
constraint, but willingly; not for filthy
lucre, but of a ready mind;
3 Neither as being lords o v e r God's
heritage, but being ensamples to the
flock.
M o n e y c a n n o t be t h e controll
ing interest in t h e life of a n y
minister. If it is, it will ruin him. H e
must serve because h e loves God,
and because h e loves t h e sheep.
It is certainly t h e d u t y of t h e
flock to support t h e pastor, t h e
elder, t h e bishop, but h e is n o t to
do it for filthy lucre. His motive is
to serve God a n d to p u t t h e people
firstreally to serve t h e m , t a k i n g
the oversight thereof w i t h t h e
right motive in mind. It is r i g h t
a n d scriptural t h a t ministers be
supported. But if t h e y are just
doing it for money, t h e n it be
comes w r o n g .
I TIMOTHY 5:17-18
17 Let the elders that rule well b e
c o u n t e d w o r t h y of d o u b l e h o n o u r ,
especially they w h o labour in the word
and doctrine.
18 For the scripture saith. Thou shalt not
muzzle the o x that treadeth out the corn.
And, the labourer is worthy of his reward.
^ . o m b i n i n g all t h e s e s c r i p
tures it's easy to grasp t h e n a t u r e
of t h e ministers called pastors. Let
m e s a y again, t h e Greek word
translated pastor means s h e p h e r d .
T h e s h e p h e r d would h a v e t h e
oversight of t h e flock. N o com
p a n y of believers c a n be g a t h e r e d
t o g e t h e r for long without feeling
t h e n e e d for such ministry. T h e r e
is a l w a y s t h e n e e d of wise, compe
tent oversight of t h e m e e t i n g s of
t h e assembly, or p r a y e r group, or
w h a t e v e r , so that all t h i n g s will be
d o n e d e c e n t l y a n d in order. (I Cor.
14:40.) W h e n t h e Word talks about
elders, or bishops, or overseers it is
talking about people with the
pastoral gift. For pastors a r e gifts
g i v e n b y Christ to t h e c h u r c h .
