WHAT IS A THESIS?

Greek word tithenaito put forth or lay down the idea in writing with the support
of documents
Popularized in the U. S. As requirement for collegiate or masters degree (Campell
et al. 1990)
A long formal complete report by a candidate to an advanced academic degree
A research report of a scholar to demonstrate knowledge of the researcher in a
certain academic discipline
An idea put forth and p supported by an argument, evidence or theory
A long written presentation of an idea and the evidence assessing the thesis
A formal document designed to answer a research question
THESIS DEFINITION
A scholarly report
Typically describing the development
Testing of a hypothesis or answering a research problem or statement
By the scientific methods
AIMS OF WRITING A THESIS
Demonstrate some initiative, originality and ,creativity by the student
Presents new knowledge or new applications of existing knowledge, in some
cases, development of new methodology or analytical procedure
Involves some degree of student participation in most of all stages of the project
design and determination of objectives, data collection (quantitative or qualitative
interpretation and qualitative, course reporting.
Uses tools learned in the thesis methodology, e. g, statistics, computers, remote
sensing, cartography and survey techniques.
Demonstrate an in depth understanding of how results (numerical or descriptive)
relate to theory.
Typically requires a significantly greater effort to carry out than does a professional
paper project.
THE THESIS TITLE
It captures the essence of the research study
It must be novel
Sounds attractive
It has something new to offer to the reader
It is the statement which expresses the thesis main problem and its nature,
whether it is a theory building, an evaluative or an assessment study
It describes what the research is all about
It gives identity to the study

It is the statement of definite purpose of the thesis


Some have two parts:
o the main title (it highlights the thesis problem and holds the main problem)
o and the subtitle (used to emphasize the main focus of the title)

CONSTRUCTING THE THESIS TITLE


Do not state the title in question form.
Avoid concluding titles
Avoid too broad title
Avoid vague title
Avoid pass style (no longer fashionable or popular)
Avoid wordy title
Add sophistication in the title
FORMAT OF THE THESIS TITLE
Short title (four or more words)
Single line title
Semi-inverted pyramid (double line)
Semi-inverted Inverted pyramid (several lines)
QUALITIES OF THE THESIS TITLE
Simple
Clear
Short
Interesting
Novelty
Researchable
