Lamons HTG
Product Family
Lamons high temperature gaskets represent the ultimate solution for
industrial bolted joints that are exposed to extreme temperature. By
combining the superior sealing performance, impermeability and stability
of flexible graphite with an exceptional oxidation barrier, Lamons HTG seals
represent the best technology available in regards to torque retention and
sealability at elevated temperatures.
The Lamons HTG concept utilizes a premium super oxidation inhibited
flexible graphite that is completely shielded from oxidation by barriers of
mica/phyllosilicate. This inhibited flexible graphite is the most oxidation
resistant available on the market and like all homogeneous flexible graphite,
completely maintains its physical and mechanical properties regardless of
temperature exposure. The phyllosilicate barriers consist of Novus Hi-Temp
material which is a mica/phyllosilicate based sealing material that contains
a very low content of inorganic binder (less than half of the binder found in
vermiculite/phyllosilicate filled sheets). The combination of these two sealing
materials allows the user to maintain the stability and impermeability of
flexible graphite and eliminate the effects of oxidation at extreme
temperatures. Lamons HTG family of products are the most stable and
impermeable gasket materials available for extreme temperatures.

WRI-HTG spiral wound gasket

Lamons SpiraSeal gaskets are manufactured
using specially fabricated machinery. They are
configured to allow superior resiliency and selfadjustment when compared to conventional
gaskets. Lamons offers these gaskets in almost
any combination of size, thickness and
component material.

Kammpro-HTG kammprofile gaskets

Lamons Kammpro gaskets are recognized as a problem solver
for heat exchangers, large vessels and equipment that
experience excessive movement due to thermal expansion.
The Kammpro provides one of the tightest seals combined
with superior load bearing characteristics.

Traditional Seal Concepts

Most sealing materials are detrimentally affected by extreme temperature exposure. Many competitive
products utilize a necessary processing aid consisting of an organic rubber binder where an inorganic
material is held in suspension. This low temperature binder begins to degrade, carbonize and embrittle at
temperatures as low as 300F, resulting in a complete loss of physical and mechanical properties at moderate
temperatures. This rubber binder is susceptible to chemical attack and degradation even in mildly
aggressive services. This degradation inevitably leads to torque loss and leakage. Since the binder is evenly
dispersed throughout the sealing material, a complete loss of physical and mechanical properties is
experienced when exposed to elevated temperature. The mechanical properties that are characteristic of
an effective seal are lost when the rubber binder is subjected to temperature and chemical attack.

Popular compressed non-asbestos gasket exposed to

400F for a duration of 4 hours. The physical properties
of these materials were severely degraded when
exposed to a fraction of their rating. The structure
turns glass-like and can fracture with slight flexing.
While these materials can still maintain functionality in
most cases, their ability to compensate for thermal
and pressure fluctuations is severely diminished by
heat exposure.

A vermiculite based compressed sheet material that

utilizes aramid fiber and a high content of organic binder
is severely affected by temperature and chemical
attack. A vermiculite material offers no additional
advantage over compressed non-asbestos at elevated
temperatures due to the high organic content.
Flexible graphite that is unprotected from oxidizers and
exposed to the atmosphere will convert to a gas
through oxidation. Flexible graphite that is contained
within a spiral wound element (left) will degrade at a
slower rate than a faced metal core (right) because it
is relatively encapsulated. Total oxidation is inevitable
unless the flexible graphite is sufficiently protected.
A kammprofile with a vermiculite based facing. An
exposure to 1500F for six hours between flanges
destroys the rubber binder that holds the vermiculite
powder in suspension.

Vermiculite filled spiral wound gaskets utilize organic

binder as a processing aid for the filler. Elevated
temperature degrades the binder and will compromise
tightness and sealability.

all physical and mechanical properties
after exposure

Thermal cycling test data shows very favorable test results for both Lamons Kammpro HTG and a
competitive vermiculite based material at 500 degrees F.

Lamons WRI-HTG spiral wound gasket after

exposure to 1500F Maintaining the proven
and superior sealing characteristics of flexible
graphite creates an ideal high temperature
solution the flexible graphite is completely
protected from oxidation

Thermal Cycling data at 800 degrees F is where the difference is significantly illustrated. Organic binder in
the vermiculite based facing is compromised to the point of leakage. The degradation of the binder in the
vermiculite facing results in a loss of the ability to tolerate thermal upsets. The Lamons Kammpro HTG
maintains the flexible graphites original resilience and physical properties while protected from oxidizers
by the phyllosilicate barriers.

HTG

GASKETING PRODUCT FAMILY

Lamons WRI-HTG and Kammpro HTG are the most stable gasket designs
available for extreme temperatures. The utilization of flexible graphite allows
the gasket to maintain torque and tightness through thermal cycling while
providing the ultimate fugitive emissions seal. By utilizing a phyllosilicate
oxidation shielding, the flexible graphite is able to maintain its integrity and
provide freedom from oxidation.
