La subasta Your class will be holding an auction (subasta). Your instructor will give you a chart
that lists the items. He/She will be the auctioneer and you and your classmates will be the bidders,
with a budget of $500 each. Look at the items on display so you can plan to bid for the items you
want. If you are the highest bidder, write down the item you bought (under item) and the cost (under
bid). Watch out! Once you run out of money, you can no longer bid in the auction.

La subasta
Time: 30 minutes
Resources: Auction charts, vocabulary-related items
Instructions: Photocopy and distribute the auction charts page. Tell students they each have a $500

budget for a classroom auction. Bring in enough vocabulary-related items for everyone to buy something,
and tag everything with a starting bid. You are the auctioneer and the students the bidders. During the
auction, the student who acquires an item with the highest bid must write down what he/she bought and
how much it cost. When students have spent their $500 budgets, they will not be able to bid anymore.
Afterwards, they should all share with the class what they bought and how much they spent.
You can vary the activity by letting the students take turns being the auctioneer.

De compras Your classroom is now an open-air market. Your instructor will give you a card
showing your role, as either a customer or vendor, and a list of items and their prices. Walk around
the classroom to find the right vendor or customer to make a purchase or sale; just one person will
sell what you need and just one person will need what you sell. Customers are allowed to bargain, so
make sure you write down the final price. The first student to buy or sell all his/her items wins.

Instructions: Photocopy and distribute the shopping assignment pages to the students. Tell them

they are going to an open-air market and their charts contain the information they will need. One
group will be customers looking for the vendor that has the items on their list; the other group will be
vendors with items to sell. Tell them they can bargain and they should write down the final prices they
paid. When students find the right person to make a deal, they should write down his/her name next to
the item. The student who successfully buys or sells all his/her items first, wins.
You can vary the activity by giving students a blank chart and letting them write down what they
want to buy or sell, and then go bargaining.
