Current Virtual Reality

They are, desktop VR, Video Mapping, and Immersive VR. Desktop is the most basic, like peering
into another dimension and using the mouse and keyboard to interact through the screen. Whereas
Immersive virtual reality is a full immersion experience where the user wears a helmet or goggles
that project the video, audio is pumped into the room, the computer tracks the movements of the
head, arms, legs, etc. This immersive mode allows you to use your entire body to experience the
realities of another digital dimension.
Virtual Reality has its Pros and Cons. The positives lie with training, for example, pilot training for
commercial pilots and fighter pilots. These examples save hundreds of thousands of dollars and
provide the pilots with the added time needed to become fully certified.
Virtual reality can also be used for long distance communication, education, and even medical
training. However, there are cons based on social distancing, false sense of reality and more which
can be managed through proper education and use of the technology, but must be noted and
accounted for.

Science Lab

There are many examples of virtual reality rides from Disneyland attractions to online video games.
A realistic virtual reality realm exists online with no monthly subscription, it is called Second Life
where you can design your own human, start a business, own property and socially interact with
hundreds of thousands of other people.
If you are interested in fantasy realms you can always check World of Warcraft, EverQuest, or Star
Wars: The Old Republic which is set for release in the fall of 2012. These realms offer you an out of
body experience in a fantasy where flying, magic, and aliens rule so that you may take your
entertainment to a whole new level.

Education Medical Training

4

The real benefit of this type of VR training is that when it is done right, it can really enhance a
student doctors knowledge of surgery techniques as they can watch the same procedure from
multiple surgeons where in real life they might only ever see a procedure take place a couple of
times form a handful of different surgeons who would all likely be practicing at the same hospital and
would have their own set way of operating. In fact I have already seen comments about this Hip
Replacement video from doctors in America saying that they approach Hip Replacements slightly
different from the French surgeons seen here.

The Many Faces

New virtual reality technology (VR) is announced weekly. Writers describe a broad spectrum of
devices. Head displays for video and cinema are recent entries. The test of whether new technology
meets established criteria for virtual reality will be considered. Immersion and head-displays reduce
time in treatment and healthcare costs as determined by funded research. Applications suitable for
mental health include phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and other anxiety
disorders. Virtual environments embed the whole person within computer generated surroundings.
Engaging attention leads to interactions that accelerate focused learning in novel worlds without
boundaries. This is possible when the user develops heightened awareness. A diagnosis defines a
problem. User interaction with the virtual environment is encouraged for the purpose of learning
corrective experiences. Virtual Reality Immersion Therapy (VRIT) is a system of psychotherapy and
not simply a tool as some researchers unfamiliar with clinical practices suggest.

Business value of immersive VR across

multiple Industries

"IC.IDO is the leading software for targeted, interactive visual decision-making on the basis of Virtual
Reality. It provides a platform for a collaborative work of locally, globally and departmentally
distributed teams. Organization will realize efficiency potentials that have not yet been lifted through
stand-alone solutions or central systems. Many global companies use IC.IDO standardized solution
that is easily integrated into existing structures and processes."
"Increased technical complexities, elongated and dynamic supply chains, growing shortage of
experienced workforce, and relentless time and budgetary pressures lead to a complex environment
that challenges the culture and traditional means by which companies make decisions. Rapid
evolution in the capabilities and complexity of design tools and the steady push for digital design where physical products do not exist until most of the design has been complete - erect yet another
communication barrier, especially for participants outside the engineering community."

The Virtuix Omni

14

The Omni takes virtual reality to an all-encompassing new place

for more than just games and entertainment. Gamers can feel
immersed in the games they play as the device allows them to
move their feet, walk and run along with the program. With the
use of Oculus Rift to view their virtual world, the Omni places the
user right in the middle of the action. But this is just for starters,
as there are applications beyond fun and games that can be
extremely useful out there in the real world.
The Virtuix Omni looks like a round treadmill, complete with a
railing. The pack for 699 USD includes a special belt and shoes to
be used with it. Purchase of the Oculus Rift is separate, but
necessary to complete the virtual simulation.

The Realm System

The Realm System, one of the innovative technologies currently

seeking funding on Kickstarter, is the first system to harness the
power of the user's body resistance to deliver an interactive,
physically immersive virtual gaming experience. The system
measures energy expenditure and uses unique resistance bands
and sensors to magnify the user's resistance.
The sensors integrated into the hand-held controllers track the
movements of the user's hands and body and can accurately
measure positions, orientations and accelerations. Realm uses the
collected data to deliver precise biometric information on the
user's force, power and calorie expenditure. The ability to track
the user's power turns virtual gameplay into a hands-on, highly
immersive experience while delivering significant health and
fitness benefits.

The Car of the Game Platform

In our concept of the Car of the Future, people will use their cars a good deal
of the time for activities that take place in a virtual reality environment
(similar to the Holodeck on Star Trek: The Next Generation), and less for the
physical activity of getting from point A to point B. This will have the direct
outcome that less petroleum will be used, and less pollution will be given off.
A technology of a very special kind of glass will be developed for the cars
front and rear windshields, and front and back side windows, left and right.
This technology will be dual-purpose. The glass will be transparent, allowing
the driver and passengers to see the real physical world, real landscapes and
real highways, as in the Car of the Past and Present.
In addition, the glasses will be video screens, surrounding the driver and
passengers on all sides with video images. What will be played and seen on
these video screens is the central component of a new virtual reality
experience. What one sees through video will be complemented by what one
hears through audio, by climate changes that one senses through the
environmental and climate-control systems, and by the feel of the car
against the road or the terrain, the simulated physical interaction between
the car and the outside as the driver drives and the car moves.

18

VR battlegrounds

These VR battlegrounds will be built specifically with different

types of experiences in mind. Not only will players have a stateof-the-art VR headset strapped to their head, but the environment
itself will help to simulate a new reality. Environmental effects like
wind and water can be added to further enhance the experience,
while haptic vests can simulate the feeling of being struck or shot.
Haptic gloves allow for players to interact with their virtual
environment.
Imagine these environments as a skeleton of sorts. The walls,
ledges and hallways are just the starting point of the experience.
Once the player straps on the headset, additional layers are
added over the top of the real-world environment to create a
virtual one. What was once an ordinary tunnel is transformed into
an ancient tomb. What moments before was a textureless room of
columns and blocks suddenly transforms into a war-torn city with
the help of the VR headset.
