Project Theme
Design Calculation for 2-Storey dwelling made by masonry
cross walls according to EC6.
The project consists in the design of an individual dwelling
building with underground, ground and one floor (Ug.+G+1Fl.),
placed in urban environment (provided with electricity, pluming ,
natural gases facilities and internet).

Building Situation
The building is situated at the the exit of Dorohoi city and is
connected to the sewage system, to the gas system, electric and
water system and also to the internet. The zone has a temperate
continental climate with the humidity lower in the winter and
greater in the summer.
The location of the construction is done on a relatively level
terrain, reduced slope- under 5%.From geological surveys results
that the underground water level is deeper than the maximum
foundation depth. The area is on extra urban place.
The basement will provide the necessary processes of servicing
the construction, such as its own central heating, laundry, space
installations
and
functional
rooms
with
complementary
destinations (garages, warehouses, boxes, cellars, warehouses,
etc.).

The ground floor view will include spaces for day of activities:
meetings of the family, guest reception, food preparation and
serving of meals, maintenance, study, restroom of short duration,
accommodation for guests, and rooms for the elderly,circulation
space and recreation (halls, terraces), secondary storage rooms
(storerooms, offices).
On the first floor will provide rooms and in particular the pace
for the night, namely: rooms, storage, etc. And rooms for children /
young people, room for fun activities, spaces for fun and
recreation areas for the restroom.
Ground Floor:
Living room: 26.5 m2
Kitchen: 8,2 m2
Bathroom: 2.8m2
Office: 18.80 m2
Dining room : 11.6 m2
Bedroom : 8,2 m2
Staircase: 12.2 m2
First Floor:
Bedroom: 18.8 m2
Bedroom: 26.5 m2
Bedroom: 17.25 m2
Bathroom: 5.40 m2
Hall: 24.5 m2
The vertical circulation within the house is provided by a
staircase. The interior bearing walls are made of brick masonry of
25 cm thickness, and the exterior walls are of 30 cm thickness. At
the exterior the thermal insulation is provided by a 10cm thick
layer of polystyrene.
The building is designed to have structural load bearing solid walls
of brickwork masonry with concrete cores. The floor is made of
monolith concrete. It is a rigid structure with 2 spans and 4 bays.
The roof is designed as a pitched roof , with 4 slopes, made of
timber members and clay covering. The stairs are made of
reinforced concrete.

Design of the insulation for exterior walls

The thermal resistance for each element of the building envelope
must satisfy the requirement for the thermal resistance:
Ro,ef Rnec
With different values of Rnec for various parts of the building
envelop elements.
The equation used for the estimation of the thermal resistance of
a building element for one direction thermal flux is:

Ro ,ef Ri Rk Re

The building elements of the envelope that must be verified are:

The external wall, the floor over unheated basement, top floor or
roof (floor under unheated attic, terrace roof).

Design of a masonry wall

1 .Axial force computation

Calculus of loading area

Outer-wall: 2.15 m2
Inner-wall: 3.4 m2
15

Axial force:
groof =1.35* gk,0 =1.35* 1.06=1.43 kN/m2
Sd=3.43 kN/m2
qd = F0 qk=(1.50)(0.7)qk
for slab over ground floor and slab over the basement
qd =1.5*0.7*1.5 = 1.575 kN/m2
for slab over last floor
qd =1.5*0.7*0.75 = 0.7875 kN/m2
Outer walls
N3i = (qroofsystem + Sd + qdlf) * SEa + 5.38 * 2.15

kN
N2S = N3i + 10.3 * 2.15 = 46.2kN
N2i = N2S + 5.32 * SaE + 1.575 * SaE
= 46.2 + 5.32 * 2.15 + 1.575 * 2.15 = 61.01 kN
S
N1 = N2S + 10.3 * 2.15 = 46.2+10.3*2.15=68.34 KN
N1i = N1S + 10.3 * SaE + 1.575 * SaE
= 68.34+10.3*2.15+1.575*2.15 = 93.86 kN
N0 = N1i + 10.3 * 2.15= 116 kN

16

Inner wall
N3i = (qroof system + Sd + qdrf) * 3.4+ 5.38 * 3.4
= (1.43 + 3.43 + 1.575) * 3.4 +5.38 * 3.4 = 40.88
kN
N2S = N3i + 5.56 * 3.4 = 59.78 kN
N2i = N2S + 5.32 * Sa1 + 1.575 * 3.4
= 59.78+ 5.32 * 3.4+ 1.575 * 3.4 = 83.21kN
S
N1 = N2i + 6.56 * 3.4 = 105.51 kN
N1i = N1S + 4.76 * Sa1 + 1.575 * Sa1
= 105.51 + 4.76 * 3.4 + 1.575 * 3.4 = 127.04 kN
N0 = N1i + 5.56 * 3.4 = 145.94 kN

17

Bending Moment (M):

M=R*e

M3 = q lf * SaE * e = 5.38 * 2.15 * 0.0417 = 0.482 kN*m
