IS SEXUAL ABSTINENCE A REALISTIC OPTION FOR THE TEENAGERS TODAY

The word Teenager was created in the 1950's due to the tremendous population of those
in this age category and because teenagers started gaining more independence and freedoms.
Teenagers were also becoming more independent in the type of music they preferred to listen to,
no more listening to what their parents liked, teens flocked to the new music of the decade,
which was rock and roll.
The teenagers of the past were expected to take life seriously. Males were expected to join
the military or go out and get a job in order to help bring in money for their family or to take care
of their future family. Females were taught how to take care of the household and prepare
themselves to be a dutiful wife and take care of children. Marriage and preparing for a family,
more than education or a career, was seen as a definite in the lives of teenagers. Also, teens had
very little economic freedom, independence, and input into decision making prior to the events
in the past.
However, things on todays changed life for teenager. The economy started booming and
families experienced a great deal of economic power, freedom and independence, including
teenagers. New medians were created like television and AM radio that attracted teenagers. Also
they were able to college degrees, develop skills, and seek a successful career. This resulted in
teenagers receiving spending money and having more time to socialize with other teenagers. Of
course, this newly found independence would often result in conflict between the parents and the
child. The media played on these emotions and often portrayed teenagers as juvenile
delinquents. Peers easily influence teenagers, often at that stage in life what peers think and do
becomes more important than what parents think and say. This sometimes caused friction, it
seemed as if teenagers were becoming more rebellious, defensive, and at times, disrespectful,
and that listening to rock and roll was the root cause of all this rebellion. And as if, teenagers
were really sexually contacted with their relationships with other sexes nowadays.
Sexual abstinence is a choice from refraining sexual activity beyond hugging or kissing. It
somewhat an attitude that couples should inherit in order to have a successful relationship
without getting others affected to what might circumstances that may happen. But is it a realistic
option for the teenagers today?
On what is happening on today, we may say its not. Teenagers on my age get sexually
interfere on their opposite sexes that cause them to be underage parents that definitely affects
their future of living. Well others may depend because of condoms and other things in order to
achieve birth control. Thats why, can we still believe that sexual abstinence is still happening on
modern teenagers?
Teenagers of today are really eager to engage on these things because of social medias
and other aspects that affects their mental thinking which urges them to engage on these
prohibited activities. Parents were too busy on work especially when both parents are working
that they forget to guide their children on the path on decision-makings that has a big impact on
their lives. Peers on school such as gangs and somewhat they call sisterhood and brotherhood
organizations is failed to give attention by parents that these are one of the most influential
things among teenagers. Peer norms include descriptive norms, injunctive norms, and peer
pressure. Descriptive norms refer to what you believe most of your peers are doing. After all, you
might reason that if others are doing something especially if many others are doing something
it must be good. Injunctive norms refer to how much you believe your peers approve of a
certain behavior; you're more likely to do something if you don't think it's wrong. Finally, peer

pressure refers to explicit social coercion. And due to high technology of today, teenagers can
easily access on prohibited website that deeply influence them.
In the world weve living, sexual abstinence is not a realistic option because of what is
happening today, we cant control what is began that might you can be also affected due to
these things unless we disciplined ourselves well.
