Holy Ghost

By Lara Goold

Materials needed: Scriptures, flashlight and paper lunch bag (for attention activity), 5 plastic plates or metal pie pans
with the round signs attached, 5 metal spoons, Optional: a special comfort item for one of the children
(special blanket or stuffed animal, binky, etc)

Purpose: To help children understand that after they are baptized they will receive the gift of the Holy Ghost to
help them.

Scriptures: “And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.” Moroni 10:5

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you
all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” John 14:26

Opening Songs:“Listen, Listen”, Children’s Songbook, page 107

“The Still Small Voice‖, Children’s Songbook, page 106-107

Opening song and prayer:

Attention Activity: Show picture of John the Baptist baptizing Jesus (below). In a minute or less, remind them of
the story of Jesus’ baptism and how happy Heavenly Father was that Jesus was baptized. Tell them that
there was another special person at Jesus baptism. This person was the Holy Ghost and he helps
Heavenly Father and Jesus. Further explain that the Holy Ghost is like Heavenly Father and Jesus because
he loves us and wants to help us, but the Holy Ghost does not have a body of flesh and bones like
Heavenly Father and Jesus do. (Point out their skin and bodies to help them understand what ―flesh and
bones‖ means.)

Flashlight and Puppet Demonstration: Show your family the paper bag puppet and tell them that this is
like each one of us and that the light from the flashlight is like the Holy Ghost. Tell the family that since
the Holy Ghost is a spirit, he can dwell inside of them. Demonstrate by turning on the flashlight and
shining it into the bag and talk about how the Holy Ghost can fill the bag (our souls) with light and
warmth. Sometimes it is even possible to see the light through the bag. This is like the Holy Ghost
brightening our souls and making us happy.

Lesson: Discussion: The Holy Ghost is a member of the Godhead. He has a body of spirit rather than of flesh and
bones. Because He is a spirit, you cannot see Him. But you can feel Him with you. The Holy Ghost has
many names. Some of them are the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, the Spirit of the Lord, and the
Comforter.

After you are baptized, you are confirmed a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
and you receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Having this glorious gift means that if you live righteously,
you can have the Holy Ghost with you always. The Holy Ghost can bring feelings of warmth, love,
peace, joy, and wanting to do good. When you feel the Holy Ghost with you, thank Heavenly Father for
this blessing. The Holy Ghost is one of the greatest gifts Father in Heaven can give you.

―Our Comforter‖ with picture—If possible use an actual comfort item of one of the children to talk to
them about what comfort means (or use the picture provided). {If your children do not have a special
comfort object, then talk about how it feels when mom or dad is holding and snuggling with them} If the

child is old enough to express themselves, let them explain how that special blanket (or whatever it is)
makes them feel. It they’re not old enough, then explain it for them. You know how when you’re sad,
your blanket (and a big hug from mom and dad) can help you feel safe and warm again. Relate those
warm, happy feelings to the feelings the Holy Ghost gives us.

Plastic Plate Demonstration (need scriptures, plates/pans and spoons): Have 2 people stand side by side.
One is the Holy Ghost (they should be a decent reader and have the sign around their neck) and reads very
softly Moroni 10:5. Ask the other person if they were able to hear the promptings of the Spirit. Then
have another person come forward and stand in between the first two people. Give the person a labeled
plastic plate with a spoon and tell them to gently tap the plate while the ―Holy Ghost‖ softly reads the
scripture again. Was it harder to hear the promptings this time? Discuss what is labeled on the plate and
why it might affect a person’s ability to hear the promptings of the Holy Ghost. Continue this process
until all five plastic plates (or however many people there are in your family) are being tapped while the
scripture continues to be read. The first person and the person representing the Holy Ghost should be far
apart by this time, with five people in between them. It should be almost impossible to hear the scripture
being read. Explain that unworthy things in our lives make it hard to hear the still, small voice. Even
though the Sprit is trying to communicate with us, we cannot hear him.

Explain that the Holy Ghost can be felt in many different ways. Review Gal. 5:22–23 and list some of
the feelings the Holy Ghost can bring into their hearts. Let them know that the Holy Ghost will lead them
to do only good things. Tell them that many times the still, small voice is more a feeling than a voice. (1)
We feel it in our hearts. (Have each place a hand over his/her heart. (2) Sometimes thoughts and words
come to our minds. (Have each place a hand on his/her head.) (3) At times, if we are in danger, we may
even hear a voice. (Have each touch his/her ears.) Emphasize that each person may feel the Holy Ghost
in a different way and that it may feel different at different times and that’s OK.

Share a personal story when you’ve felt the influence of the Holy Ghost in your life.

Enrichment: Based on your family’s ages and attention spans, pick one or more of the following Enrichment ideas to
add meaning to your lesson. Enrichment activities can also be done at other times during the week if time
does not allow for it on FHE night.

Gifts-of-the-Spirit Treasure Scriptures: To fill a treasure chest with scripture treasures, first find each
scripture and fill in the blank(s) to learn some of the many ways in which the Holy Ghost is one of the
greatest gifts we can receive in this life. Then cut out the scripture treasures. Place the scripture treasures
in the treasure chest. Whenever you find a new scripture treasure, add it to your treasure chest.

Family Memorization: Children as young as 4-years-old are old enough to start memorizing scriptures.
Start by learning the 1st Article of Faith. Older kids can work on the 4th Article of Faith.

Still Small Voice Activity page: See how much the kids remember about the Holy Ghost and have them
fill in the blanks. Don’t make them feel badly if they don’t remember the answers, simply take a second
to give them a hint or briefly reteach it to them. You could do this as a family activity or individually for
older kids.
